The Kawarau Hike

View Album If you're up to it - put on your hiking boots and come along, the plan is like this - A cabin boat will take us across the lake and into the river, where we hire a punt to take us up to the first in a series of rapids. From here we hike up a rocky cliff and through some dense forest until we reach the clearing with an ancient mysterious stone circle. After a short meditation we'll continue through the forest to the edge of the cliff. We'll cross the gorge via the old Kawarau Bridge and on to the...

Sleepy Village

View Album After those towering infernos, I took some extended hikes out into the wild country of Paengia. On one of my hikes I discovered this village in some rather remote valley... looking at the houses, this must have been a french colony once The grapes seem to thrive nicely, so I tried some of the local wine... but man, they do need some decent vinyards around here - the french art of making wine seems all but lost... brrrr... talk about sour... However, when it comes to building barns, they sure do...

Bellington

View Album An overview of the western and eastern parts of town Good Morning! You guys look like you raided all the mini bars... so let's start with a stroll along the waterfront to clear your heads :-) Through a little park we climb up to the campus of Bellington U. From here we have a good view of the sports facilities used by all schools in Bellington. We have strong teams for football, swimming, kajak and fencing. The pride of Bellington is the Agricultural College with the associated arboretum....

Retreat

View Album Retreat is just a small community without much industry or commerce... but still a much favored destination for those who can afford ;o) Our first stop is the attractive resort centered around an old victorian bath house... From the Resort we move north - through wild country and a logging concession... Into the town of Havnoc - not too wealthy, just about to move up from its shanty town status... West of Retreat Resort, taking a short busride or a nice hike past the hot springs, visitors can do...

Kentington (PART II)

View Album Kentington (PART II) Okay, let's continue the tour... After crossing the canal we pass through the main residential areas of Kentington... Finally we reach the industrial heart of the city... Chemicals, manufacturing, waste facilities... And the huge, sprawling steel works and shipyards... Nighttime... And the next morning... brrrr... If you are new to Kentington, don't miss part I (previous update)! :-)

Kentington (PART I)

View Album Kentington is a rather large town, one of the breadbaskets and industrial centers of Mountainview... Since there is a lot to see, this update is split into two parts... We start our trip at the Aristocrat Inn on Radio Island... The name is derived from the huge Radio Tower... With 358 meters it is easily the highest structure in the whole Mountainview region... We have a special permit to take the 8 minute elevator ride to the tower's top platform, offering a breathtaking view of Kentington...

Rivershade

View Album Okay folks - grab some coffee and donuts... this is gonna be a long ride (again)... ) Tourists flock to Rivershade from all of Mountainview - mostly entering through the south eastern corner... where rail lines and roads cut through difficult terrain... The town is served by a number of quaint stations... Around which cluster moderate commercial areas... Rivershade is situated in a bend of a large river. Generations have worked tirelessly to tame this river and shape it into a peaceful flowing...

View Album Basically Bucktown consists of a number of loosely connected subdivisions - appearing kinda rural, but well off anyway... Let's stroll through the suburbs first, starting at the small Hitech compound in the northwest corner... Some subdivisions are separated by low-lying marshy areas, designated to be drained for future developments... Mainstreet is dominated by large and wealthy apartment blocks - At the southern border we find some manufacturing embedded in a rather old-fashioned commercial...

Black Mountain

View Album A string of small hamlets set into the flank of a large and very steep mountain... We'll just tour all the little villages... they all developed different styles of housing and have commercial buildings mixed in for easy access. Some of young Kip's 'ventures' - always dreaming of the sea he calls his snowboard-rental "Oceanside Surfing"... he also owns that lonely boat, offering "Ocean Tours" (a ticket includes 36 bottles of beer)... oh well... View of some serpentines... Nightviews Overview of...

Logging in Mountainview

Well... a long time has passed since my first addon was released for the 125-years celebration... So over the past few weeks I've been busy to refresh some of the old items and produce a load of new ones for a second addon... While discussing, lotting, modding and testing these items, a number of screenshots evolved - making up this small update :-) If you are considering to start your own logging industry, you're invited to browse my "Cheat Sheet: Logging in Rural Areas" which gives you a complete...

Sunny Vale

View Album We stay in the same area - more old towns... ;-) At first sight, Sunnyvale appears to be just another farming community... With a quaint old town center... And fancy parking... A cozy beach... But the whole town really lives and works for the Sunny Vale Crest Hotel... Sunny Vale at night... Overview

The Great Cathedral

View Album This can happen if your mayor does not invest in education and modern amenities, but puts all the money into a fancy cathedral... most residents have to live in buildings more than a hundred years old... And it might take another hundred years to finish that cathedral... Dirty industry has not yet been relocated farther away from residential areas... Modern apartments rise very slowly... Schools and hospitals are few and always overcrowded... The commercial district lacks space and modern...

Largo (Part 1)

View Album Largo City Here is another Mountainview heavyweight... since there is lots to see, this update comes in two consecutive posts. In Part 1 we will visit some farms, suburbs and the industrial sector. In Part 2 we'll continue to the commercial and residential districts... We reach Largo from the north, passing through an agricultural area with focus on dairy farms and products... Passing through suburbs with a large cemetary, an arboretum and a 18-hole golf course... All too soon we reach the...
