7. Lake Pointless. Suburbia

    1. An overview of this part of the shores of Lake Pointless. These are fringe suburbs of this small city of 60,000 people. The lake is called Lake Pointless because rivers seem to flow in and out of it in a way that suggests it is basically a strange inlet of the sea, but we try not to focus on the natural history and geology, as most of what follows in these is similarly unrealistic in that sense. 2. 3. Farmland on the fringe of the town, trying to achieve a natural feel is sometimes quite hard with the scales involved in Simcity 4. 4. 5. 6. 7. A. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. 15. 16. B. 17. 18. 19. 20. I owe you all a big hug More pictures of this tile to come soonish I hope, and as always I welcome your comments, feedback and improvements
  8. I did install Simcity 4 and the floor of my buildings is only showing (appears as zoning) as blue, green and yellow, as in zoned, but not anymore gress, garage, etc. :s (In fact I see the buildings but not flooring, each lot). Somebody can help me please! Thank you!
  9. Evergreen Ore gets crackin'

While dabbling with Spring 'n Summer we built an residential addition near the CTNX facility aptly named Castle Condo's. Little did we think the influx of so many new Cim's would create a nightmare of, "Not enough goods to sell." We had taken the advice from Blake Walsh too an extreme and spent many hours walking the city back. One upshot from the fiasco was the development of Evergreen Ore. With this expanded industry demands on the cargo terminal brought drushkey's option into play. Please heed Chief Brown of the Highway Patrol and do not engage Carey Loftin in a duel -- you will lose! Mayor (Acting) Haylo Stachoo
  10. The Eden Bay university, which has invited P. R. Crastina, is distributed among the various Eden Bay boroughs. The Arts buildings is in Kathy Vale, and that's mostly where P. R. had been working during her stint in the region -- Writer's Central, so to speak. It is situated downtown near the picturesque Old Timers' Museum (as it is called : an ancient farm keeping alive the memory and traditions of the first settlers), the Farmers' Market and the Saint-Benign cathedral. City Hall and Radio-Vale are not far from there. Also, some big commercials and quiet residentials. it was not apparent, with all the greenery, but Kathy Vale was undergoing a boom in construction when P. R. was there, especially near the new rail terminal. Perhaps there is less greenery now... But P R. would rather remember the city as it was. (Well, folks, apparently the Choose FIles function has decided to work again for me... But DragFiles is still AWOL)
  11. Memories : Eden Bay

As P. R. was tidying up the photos of her recent trip to Europe, she found pictures of one of her more memorable trips in Eden Bay, when she stayed for six months, Spring and Summer, as writer-in-residence. It was in fact an itinerant writer-in-residence's gig, as “Eden Bay” was really several smaller towns compacted in the municipal fiction of One Big City with one mayor for its "boroughs" -- Kathy Vale, Martin Falls, Smallvilleray ... She kept alternating between them, a month here, three weeks there, visiting schools, colleges, libraries, bookstores, and the various parts of the distributed University of Eden Bay (it was UEB that had invited her). The first thing that struck her when she arrived -- it was obvious when seen from the plane-- was that the whole region was nicely hilly, green and plump with rivers, streams, lakes and bogs. She knew at once she would like it there. And she did. Kathy Vale, for exemple , where she landed first, is a pleasant mix of ancient and modern, not too sleepy, not too hectic, just the right, Goldilocks mix for her at that time -- she was not yet ready for the big time... *** SCROLL WAY DOWN for the rest. There was an upload problem:-)
  12. Kathy Vale : Fitness Heaven

    P. R. certainly left Kathy Vale way more fit than when she arrived. Valians love physical activity -- not only do they bicycle and walk and jog in Spaghetti Park, but they jog, walk and bicycle everywhere in the city -- bus services actually had to be downsized ! And there are sport facilities everywhere, to boot. Just one example, in the Park Lane district : And don't laugh at curling. Curling IS a sport ! Both precision and stamina are required. Also the ability to imbibe large quantities of beer after winning a friendly tournament. There are of course more traditional venues... But there also less...civilized places : great tracts of undeveloped land that were supposed to be used for housing but somehow successive mayors never get around to it. No real remand for it. That's where the fearless hikers go to commune with The Wild -- no paths, no signs, no fountains, just you and the underbrush, with maybe a chance to meet a racoon, or something equally untamed, like foxes, cats, squirrels and skunks. Birds, of course, and bird watchers. Who for some reason kinda dislike hikers tramping around (well, nobody's perfect). Rumor has it that there is even a llama in there. They're mostly spotted after curling tournaments.
  13. Visiting Queenbee's Ashram

As part of her prolonged visit to Queenbee's municipalities, P. R. has been invited by the Hippies. Well, that's how the town's people affectionately call the Gesalen community that has been living up in the mountain for three decades now. They were skeptical at the beginning, but seeing world famous thinkers and doers gathering there for conferences, retreats and --yes ! -- writing workshops, putting Queenbee on the The Map, they decided The Hippies were all right. As long as they stayed mostly up there. But is the Ashram thirtieth birthday, and, at the end of her stay in Queenbee, as the cool automne night falls on the town, P. R. is in for a treat : she loves fireworks, and the city offered one to the Ashram. (P. R.'s first pictures of the Ashram were taken at the beginning of her stay in Queenbee...)
  14. The frontiers of nature and the city

From the album Terring's Terrible Cities

I have noticed that many mayors build homes, shops and anything else in the outermost side of the most outermost roads of the city, forming a concrete wall that separates the nature from the city. I never liked that idea, because it makes the city looks more like a jail. This is why I always keep the outermost side of the outermost road free from any kind of constructions, with only some MMP made parks and picnic fields here and there, in order to build a "bridge" between the city and the environment. Want to explore the local forest or swim to the local lake? It's just one step away.

  16. Am I the only one bothered by the clear green bias the game shows? Particularly that windmills practically fart flowers and sunshine. The windmills, if you place them in high wind zones (and on most the stock maps, there are plenty of high wind zones) are the most efficient power source you can build, until Solar(!!!). Windmills don't require water, they don't require deliveries of fuel nor generate garbage meaning they don't contribute to congestion and they also require no roads. Now I am aware that the green energy sources have a somewhat higher upfront cost. The problem is, this doesn't go anyway at all to making them more balanced - if you're going to have the thing forever, the lower costs will pay off through a healthier operating surplus. The advanced wind turbine is an even more grievous offender, eliminating the main cost of windmills - the noise pollution and limited high wind zones. Out on the water, the noise pollution doesn't matter and there is usually plenty of high wind. Yeah, I know, a coal power plant is a lot cheaper in terms of upfront costs, but even then, because you can't economically scale down power production, the ability to incrementally add to your power production again works in the favor of windmills. The upfront cost of a coal power plant, is higher than the upfront cost of a single windmill- a windmill is the cheapest way to start. And then, a second windmill is the cheapest way to double your power production. And kind of so on. It's not really that clear when it would be a better time to build a coal plant. Solar also poops daffodils and makes puppies and kittens happy. Again you have a high upfront cost, but the operating costs are waaaay lower than oil and the fuel is free as sunshine. And as if in a nod to the fact that Hydro dams aren't all beer and pretzels, they suck, being a great way to flood your city, sink your budget, or my personal favorite - cause the sewage to back up to the water pumps causing mass death. I've also yet to have a hydro dam - you know - generate power. But the real problem is that the wind always blows and the sun always shines. IRL my understanding is that wind is pretty cheap both in terms of construction and operating costs, but it suffers the serious limitation that the wind doesn't always blow. This means that baseline and fallback power stations are required, baseline such as coal, nuclear and hydro, and fallback such as gas and hydro. Maybe even worse, cheap wind power wrecks havoc on the electricity market, making life difficult for baseline power stations. I guess we can hope and maybe even expect that an expansion pack will flesh out the power system, as the game mechanics could certainly support a more advanced power system. Wind turbines would let you save up fuel when the wind blows. So wind turbines would act to reduce fuel usage, rather than replace fossil fuel plants. Since fuel usage and delivery is actually tracked in this game, this would be meaningful. It would obviously require the addition of a gas turbine, with very low construction costs and high operating costs. You would have to decide whether you want a strong baseline from fossil fuels/nuclear, or go with lots of renewables, with big spikes in operating costs when the gas needs to kick in. But anyway, solutions aside, I get the ever so slightly queasy sensation that there is a strong green propaganda bent to the whole power plants and industries things, windmills and solar is wonderful and we should built lots of it. Oil and ore runs out nearly instantly so don't even bother. Forests are wonderful (IRL: They're okay, but the favored trees, often pines, usually require extensive chemical treatment to preserve the timber so it doesn't just rot immediately). Please, don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with green propaganda, I usually vote green. My problem is that in this game the green propaganda is not done well, it feels a bit hamfisted. Also, to be fair, I've done game development myself. There simply isn't time to implement everything you'd like to as you'd like to. It's not a complaint about the job the devs have done, it's a complaint about the game, if that makes sense .
  17. GoGreen Pack for BOC Mod

GoGreen Pack Mod for BOC MOD This mod will contain most of (if not all) the Cities of Tomorrow "Green" Buildings that will be available for construction outside of the city's box!! (If I miss any, let me know). It is used for ProcsKalone BOC Mod which allows you to build outside of the city in the first place. Kudos to him! ControlNet Facility and its 3 Signal Booster Modules The Academy and its 3 Modules (Quantum, Plasma, and Nano) Sewage Sanitizer and its Modules Ground Scrubber Solar Amplifier Module Fusion Power Plant and Advanced Fusion Reactor Modules Wave Power Plant and Advanced Wave Generator Modules (See Note on Bottom) Note: The Wave Power Plant does not need a shoreline to plop and can be ploped virtually anywhere on land. I think this is kind of a cheat, but oh well. Also, please beware that if you decide to bulldoze the Wave Power Plant, it will leave behind a small strip of road that cannot be bulldoze similar to the ferry terminal and the train station. The ONLY WAY I think you can delete them is if you destroy the building with a disaster instead of bulldozing it. But you cannot use disasters out of the city box without a mod as well. Follow instructions for installation 1. Unzip the file after downloading. 2. Copy and paste the .package file into XXX:/Origin Games/SimCity/SimCityData. I just want to give a big thanks to ProcsKalone for his awesome Mod. I know he may be too busy with his real life to update this mod, or perhaps he's taking a break or something, but I will attempt to add some Cities of the Future Buildings to it even though he might add them to his official updates later on. If you find any problems, please let me know, thanks. I will be working on Omega Factories next.

  19. I know that there is a Mod Request Thread, but i think you are losing the overview at all these Requests. So it would be nice if you could remove that ugly dark green think from the parks. The lawn texture is very ugly and it would be nice if you could do it like on the preview pictures of the parks. Would be very nice and sorry, if my english was and/or is bad.
  20. Filler #3: recreational area

Today I'm just uploading a small filler, so you have something from me again:) I saw the new entry of Journey through Paengia by Paeng and I was just amazed about it. Inspired by this, (I wasn't really motivated the last days, because the vacations in Germany ended) I just build a small city centre using some of the mods from SimPeg, kinda Paengs content website. Here you go: It's a small new housing profit across the urban pond in the downtown. Across the street, there's a small commercial centre, so the people have a good supply:) Well it was just a little entry, I think you get the next one around the weekend. Have a nice day and see you soon, guys! Replies timmetje: I'm sorry, but I don't know anymore:/ These are porkies trees for sure, but I forgot the name of the mod and I could'nt find it in my plugins folder. The trees will disappear when zoning along the road anyways, so you won't see them in urban areas. pasqualegiò: Yep, I can't wait till actually developing it:) Schriefer: Thank you! dlsni: Thank you really much, I actually just put random zones in there, I didn't really planned... Well, your tip will definetly will be used, the whole area isn't even zoned yet, I hadn't enough population for a high stage, though I have a huge residential demand^^
  21. The Hill Metropolis

It have been a while since I was at Simtropolis or posted anything. I have made many cities that I didn't post in my CJ. I will start with this city. Most of the cities I have built are located in a mountainious area at the San Fransico map at Simcity4, the best terrain to enjoy building a city is a mountainious one, it presents alot of challenge to make the city look smooth and realistic (not some 90° roads and stuff like that). I hope that you like the theme. P.s.: These are some virgin images (not edited). As you go down the page, the density of the city will decrease. My cities always have some ruins and buildings from the past, a city must always try to preserve it's heritage.

I made a set of lots that will help you create your own ecological community. This is "bright green" ecology that produces. The houses are coated with a nanotech super-material that absorbs solar energy. Any excessive energy is put through in water/hydrogen/oxygen sythesis reaction as energy storage; and then hydrogen is burned up releasing the energy at night. These houses are blend in to their environment and designed to have a minimal impact on it. They are in and around quaint trail parks by Mr. Paeng. Also I included some lots with abstract modern art sculptures to make your community aesthetically pleasing. Dependencies. 24. Hello there, I have a little question about train stations, but I guess the problem's solution could be applied to other objects as well. When querying for traffic using the data view and scanning for volume instead of congestion, traffic related buildings are shown in green. Some of the custom stations I installed show this particular behavior, some do not. I messed around with the Reader a bit to no avail. Anybody here with clues?
  25. Sky garden

    Version

    3,282 Downloads

SimCity 4 miss those type of buildings, and many modern and futuristic cities' builders would love to find things like these, esspecially for who wants to make a futuristic ecological city. This is my first BAT with an obvious roof top garden, also it doesnt use too much energy. I think many players will find this pleasant. One bad part about it, is that it's not a very big building, so it will not very much, noticed from far way views or inside dense cities. So there will be more of this, bigger and better. When you download this file, you will have a subway station version, and a park version (for that small building in the pictures below), also a functional landmark version (that sadly provides only 10 jobs, but it's functional), and a growable commercial offices ($$) version. You can delete all the files that you don't want (say you don't want a growable or park version), you can find every category of lots, in a file named for that matter (example: "Tn/Sky-garden/subway station". Further more, if you like to use the BAT for other purposes, or to use it as you like, you can find it in SC4 plug-in Manager as "sg0" for the small part of the building, and "sky-garden" for the whole building.. For more information pleas see the file "Tn/Sky-Garden/DATA". No dependencies are required. This file is by SBT You can visiti the team website here: http://simmania.darkbb.com/h8-sm3portal I hope you enjoy it.

Would you be able to help us catch up after a bit of a shortfall?

We had a small shortfall last month. Your donation today would help us catch up for this month.

Make a Donation, Get a Gift!

We need to continue to raise enough money each month to pay for expenses which includes hardware, bandwidth, software licenses, support licenses and other necessary 3rd party costs.

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!
