Got a quick SC4 question?... Ask here!

Cyclone Boom

  Please Note

This thread is intended for asking questions to receive short and simple solutions. *:read:

It is meant to be a place where it's easy to reply and quick to receive answers, instead of opening a new topic each time. For example, to ask about keyboard shortcuts, how to use a cheat command, or game versions like between a patched and unpatched game. Maybe even a post someone made for a gameplay tip.

That said, we very much encourage members to open a new topic for asking anything which might lead to a discussion, or a sequence of replies on the same subject. That way it allows people to find topics when searching for particular questions.

So if you're here and that applies, please consider opening a new:

Well, I have another question that nobody will probably answer-

Didn't there used to be a 90 degree curve for the Maxis Highway?

No. It never existed because of the unreality of this thing.  The only method to have a 90° curve is to use two pieces of 45° curve

I still use Maxis for the Highways and the closest you can get is:

7010b-6142.jpg

The overall direction of turn is 90º and it is made using two sections at 45º as @ulisse said.

There has never been a tighter curve than that for them. (Same for Avenues.)

If you use the 45's in the back of the Cloverleaf set, you can get this-

Unfortunately, not a perfect circle. I thought maybe an older NAM may have had a pre-made 90. Or maybe even a custom lot.

Is it possible to control what wealth grows in a lot?

Like, I just want nothing but $$ Res and Com in my city. I understand you can influence this by taxing the hell out of the $$$ but I'm wondering if that's the only solution.

That is the primary guaranteed way. *

I do, however, suggest not taxing the complete hell out of them, but rather tax them until their demand goes slightly negative. This is enough to discourage their building, but also keeps them from getting so pissed off they upset the simulation balance. I do this by adjusting the taxes in small increments, running time, and seeing what effect it has on the demand.

You might also find NKO of use so once you set taxes back to neutral, those already grown won't get overrun by higher wealths taking their place.

I've split off all the traffic related posts into their own topic here: How to fix traffic congestion?

Do you have to start with Timbucktoo?  I would rather sample through many terrains until I find one I love?   Is there a terrain generator?  If there is I have not found it (I just started playing yesterday).

No need to start there (or ever play there) unless you want to. (If you do plan to play Timbuktoo, it's safer to use my Timbuktu Too (Complete Region) which removes the tutorials and avoids the bug wherein the game sometimes overwrites the original Timbuktu region.)

Generally, most peeps new to the game will download Maps from the STEX.

Then if you want to make your own you could use Landscape Designer. Another if you want to get a feel for random maps is my own CORIMAPS - A Tutorial for SimCity 4 where they are derived from pictures of real life clouds. You'd want to use the older specified version of GIMP tho so the tutorial pics match the program.

There's also Mapper and Terraformer as tools you can use.

Edit: @Andrew0180 We've added a new STEX category you might like to peek inside of: Ready Made Regions.

(There are more to move and @Cyclone Boom will continue getting them sorted into this new location over the next few days.)

I've been looking into making a custom region, but I kind of want to load it with an already set topography.

I looked online in various ways to do it, coming across this video in particular: Custom Regions

However, I want to do something that combines both methods shown in that video. Is it possible to make a custom region where you have full control over the tiles (small, medium, big) and at the same time have a grayscale map to customize the topography of the region?

Also, additional question: what should the size of this grayscaled bmp file? I've been digging around for information regarding this but I can't seem to find it. Help would be tremendously appreciated.

Yes, your best option would be to use the SC4Terraformer, but you can also get good results by combining the SC4Mapper (that doesn't edit the topography, only the tiling) and editing the grayscale files, or directly terraforming in game. You can go back and forth from terraforming in the game and changing city borders in SC4Mapper without problems, but you have to be careful not to build anything on the cities, as changing the borders will obliterate them.

you need to download the file MSCVP71.DLL and put it on the same folder the SC4Terraformer executable is. You can download it from here https://www.dll-files.com/msvcp71.dll.html

I've been wanting to upload this landmark lot of "The Freeland Yak Stew Company"... The batting was done by Berserk666 and was originally uploaded to Sim Cities main site back in the day of the exchange... So my question is if I give the batting credit to Berserk666 can I upload the model files Separately and then upload the lot file? The lotting will change from this pic as I dont remember which props and texture packs I used...

You'd need to load in the Maxis Prop Names and Query Fix which will add in all of the Maxis buildings as props. You could alternatively use the older bldgprop_vol1 and vol2, but I'd recommend T Wreck's one instead.

You can upload your lot of it without any issue, and it would be a good idea to start from there.

Now, the building model availability determines the next steps. If there is another place online where to download it, our policy is that you should only list it as a dependency and to add a link on the description of your new lot.

If, on the other hand, the file isn't available anywhere else, and the original creator either authorised you, or has been impossible to contact for several years, we can arrange a custodianship upload, always respecting the attribution to the original author and keeping the model and your lot separate.

If you think the latter is the case, please send us (the site staff) a PM with the details, for evaluation.

@matias93 The latter is the case here for Freeland Yak Stew Model files, who should I contact with the details?

Wanna learn how to transit enable lots. Of course, SC4Tool works fine for most every category I use except the TE app. Every time I start it, I get this--

62eac4dbd0bda_2022-08-0221_43_09-.jpg.3d005685c09affa4be81d97f238c150a.jpg

and the boxes won't accept the link. And I tried those file buttons too. Please tell me the non-"Go to college and take a computer course and come back in 2 years with the answer!" answer.

Hi Jack,

this one's not that easy to solve using this screen. However, in SC4Tool's install folder there should be a folder called System and in that a file called Settings.dat. This can be opened with notepad and edited as a text file . In it you'll find this

SC4ToolSettings.gif.68a270ae5e1bf69073a732514d489725.gif

Replace the values for SC4Path, and SC4Local path, save the file and you should be good to go.  The other settings can all be changed from within the program.

Also, to be complete, SC4Tool should run in XP3 Compatibility Mode as its written in .net 1 (hence the odd glitch).

Remember also that this program will make TE files that incompatible with the latest X64 Apple version of SimCity. For yourself on a PC no problem.

A long time ago I thought I saw a Detroit map that was rotated to make the city's grid line up with true North South.  After an extensive google search I couldn't find it.  Does anyone know if it actually exists or am I confusing it with another city?
