Who else thinks riots are painfully annoying in this game especially with the whole manual response thing who has any reccomendations for any automatic emergency response so my blocks don't get destroyed behind my back?

Boost up your mayor rating. Riots happen because your rating is too low, getting it up to a decent level will have you never seeing them.

I'm afraid there must be something really bad going on in your city / town. Neglect (there, I said it :noway:) is the cause of riots more often than not.

A few tips from... well, yes - technically a newbie but a promising one. *

1. Play on "easy" difficulty at first. "Medium" and "high" are tough for newcomers who are used to different games or previous SimCity versions.

2. Think locally. Having a high overall mayor rating, does not exclude the possibility of having some pockets of your city hating you outright. Consult your maps to see if there are any problems brewing up in isolated neighborhoods - poor education, high pollution or NIMBY combined are the recipe for popular uprising.

3. ("Rush Hour" only) If you play any missions, do note that some of them will work against your mayoral "image." If your rating is low enough, and you complete several rating-damaging missions, it may eventually cause trouble.

In any case, I would not agree that riots "are painfully annoying". I have yet to witness any!

In short you need to find out why your Sims are unhappy and deal with it. Of course if you act before things get out of control, Riots will not occur.

Presumably, one or more of your Education or Medical facilities is overwhelmed. Otherwise you may have problems with Crime, Garbage Removal or some other factor that gets Sims on the streets. But the information is all there if you know where to look to find the problem. Also check the News Ticker, it’ll tell you why Sims are rioting usually.

I modded them out so long ago, I forgot the game even had them. I thought, for a minute,  you were talking about SC13 with riots, fires and it's never ending parade of homeless zombies. Couldn't even plop a park without an infestation popping up. :(

Wow, I never thought the homeless were simulated anywhere outside Tropico! Was it really that bad?

It was bad. And there was absolutely no way to quell it either. The amount of mods and cheats in that game was pitiful. I was still playing that game when I joined here. The very last mod in that game was my first "official" upload as a member.

I think the only time I ever had a riot in my game was when I deliberately engineered one; I used a building cheat to place multiple casinos to tank my mayor rating.  Mind you that was years ago and I tended to play on "Easy" difficulty, though I'm unsure if the city difficulty level has any effect on how easy/hard it is to please/anger your sims.

I don't think I've ever had a riot in this game. I remember the first time I learned that they were a feature and I almost didn't believe it until someone posted a picture of one.

It's a random thing a MySim can say if the building they work in is slightly dilapidated. The LUA code to trigger it is:

    "mysim.job_condition == building_conditions.DISTRESSED1 and mysim.employed == 1"

^ Note: The original message was written as [[text@0a5bc7cc#mysim.job_building# Looking Shabby, says #Advisor#]], but the LTEXT at 0x0a5bc7cc prevails and so it's that Mold message from simcitylocal.dat which shows in the news ticker. And yes, all of the MySims are considered a type of Advisor since they offer comments on the condition of things they experience. Said comments can be news items in plain readable text or as thought balloons while you watch them throughout their day.

You might like MySim Thought and Speech Balloon Dictionary (What the MySim's speech means in English) as another peek into the inner workings of Sim logic. *;)

In history, the cause of urban riots has varied...in the 20th century, most were caused by a rumor of police brutality in a low-income area of a city, but that was the immediate cause, not the long-term stressor.

You should look at the various long-term factors: the city's economy, service levels, poverty levels, police, fire, and health protection. If your citizens feel that the government is unresponsive to them, you will get a riot.

That happened in Newark. The long-term cause was that the Italian-Irish rulers of the city were ignoring the increasing black-Latino population. Worse, Mayor Hugh Addonizio, a compulsive gambler, owed everything, including his soul, to the Gambino crime family. In the spring of 1967, Rutgers University wanted to convert the bulk of the impoverished Central Ward into an expanded campus. Addonizio thought that doing so would sort out the city's finances, add luster to that neighborhood, remove the poor, and pay off the Gambino family. The local population objected.

I forget the exact date, but in one summer night, the police hauled in a black taxi driver named Leroy Jones for a traffic violation, taking him to the West District Precinct. The local citizenry heard a rumor that he'd been beaten or killed. They descended on the old precinct and hurled bricks and bottles through its first-story windows. The cops got him out the back, but did not share that fact with the mob. They went off to destroy Springfield Avenue's shops. That terrified Addonizio, and he called for and got the National Guard to restore order.

When the lieges ask for troops, everybody takes it seriously, and the 42nd Mechanized Infantry trundled down Springfield Avenue in their armored personnel carriers, nervous white kids from the suburbs and New Jersey's considerable farmland, who had joined the Guard to avoid the real war in Vietnam. They were getting their first taste of combat, and it was against their own people.

There is no single narrative of the Newark Rebellion. 26 people were killed, including a Newark Fire Lieutenant. Everyone of them was killed by a police or National Guard bullet, no question. But police, fire, and Guardsmen vividly recall being shot at themselves. Then Newark rookie cop Armando Fontoura, now our County Sheriff, was on patrol during this horror show in a fully marked Newark Police car. He was shot at, and found expended bullets that hit the car in his vehicle when he changed shifts. There is no way that the Guard or fellow cops would have knowingly shot at a marked police car. Indeed, when we repainted my office in 2004, they ripped up the carpet, and found a bullet that had been shot into City Hall during the riot. I have it on my desk...again, no way a cop or a Guardsman would have shot at our obvious City Hall.

Today there is a memorial to the 26 dead, and that precinct has its first-story windows covered with brick. It is being replaced due to antiquity by a new one, and the old facility will become a community outreach center and Police Museum, to both honor the 100-odd cops who have died in the line of duty for Newark and our efforts to connect with the community.

So the lesson for SimMayors....to avoid a riots, connect with your community. Art imitates life and vice versa.
