That is looking interesting. And now for the newbie question; do they also act like powerlines in the game or do they solely carry power for the benefit of the trains? A double function would be interesting but I can imagine that it would not be practical to make.

That's an interesting question, because in real life the upper wires actually only carry power for the trains, just at a higher voltage. The upper wires carry 138 kV power, which is stepped-down at substations every 8 miles to 11 kV to feed the wires the trains actually draw power from -- but the power comes from power plants which exclusively generate for Amtrak's ex-PRR system, or from large solid-state (or rotary!) frequency converters, since the AC power is at 25 Hz and not the kind that comes out of the wall at 60 Hz.

It'd be cool to have them do double-duty, but it wouldn't be accurate to the prototype. (though I believe the Reading Railroad had dual-purpose catenary towers of that sort.)

@Tim The Terrible those catenary towers are looking good!

@Tim the terrible, do you know what kind of train bridge that is?  Is there a mod that replaces the regular train bridge? I am talking about in the japan collection pictures, the train tracks are on a much nicer looking bridge than vanilla.

I took the pictures, Tim said I should replace the rail bridge mesh with the basic road mesh (the normal 2 laner) with mod tools, imo it looks bad, especially from the top, so I have no idea why.

ah ok so you just basically used a hack to change the mesh?  I understand, I just really hate the vanilla train bridge, I might look into doing what you did although you said that in game it actually looks bad.  What I had been doing was to place a bridge maybe 1 meter lower than my train bridges and replace the pillars with the Y pillars to cover up all that rusty crap on the rail bridges

Specifically bridge meshes or any net segment mesh?

Any.

The real challenge are node meshes.

AAAAH I CAN'T wait till you add that feature! Train bridges look so so bad in general.  However, I am trying to build a futuristic city and in that they look really really bad.  The track in the additional transit mod would fix everything, but that mod author is making it a separate network instead of adding connectivity.

I was planning to take the shots from below, then it looks so much better, like here:

    Hey Tim,

Any chance you are planning to make these type of catenaries like I suggested before? They are New Jersey Transit catenaries.

I have many plans, just not enough time. Yes I would like the make NJ and NYNH&H styles, but they look better with all those extra wires. I know how to get them, I just don't have the code ready to make it into a mod/add it to Catenary Replacer. I can make versions without extra wires (vanilla) but I'm just really busy with other projects. I hope I can find some time soon to make more styles (incl. UK, RU & DK)

How do you do custom wires, And can I have the PRR C model?

Long story. PM me if you really want to know how to make them and use them. I hope you have experience with modding (and ModTools) then.

Sure you can have the model, but what do you want to use it for?

I'm working on a "powerline pack" like they had for SimCity 4, And the transmission towers on the PRR C catenaries are great for sub transmission. I know how to use ModTools, and I'm learning C# programming.

Can you make a third rail 'catenary' which would be super useful for southeastern England and S-Bahn networks :D

If I had a dollar easy time someone asked that... 3rd Rail is not a catenary, it's a power supply. Someone is already working on tracks with 3rd rail, check out 'Additional Public Transport' thread :)

Ahaha, that's not quite what I meant :P lol the third rail is not a catenary which is why I put it in ''' but that thread is perfect for metro. I am asking for a heavy rail third rail. And if that is easier done with the network skins redskin of the tracks then cool but it also could be done as a catenary according to the game or nah, I'm presuming nah as wires can bend

There's a bizarre line between metro and heavy rail - I have been wanting to make LIRR M3 and M7 EMUs, but they'd look silly both on metro tracks and on tracks without a third rail. It's an annoying distinction to make, but I'd also appreciate some sort of heavy rail with third rail.

@agunter999 & @bsquiklehausen: When Network Skins supports network segment meshes, I can make a rail mesh with the third rail from the Metro Overhaul mod. But it might be interesting to indeed try to substitute the overhead wires with third rail. I'll test it when I have time. The next problem will still be how to use it. Using it with CR, you will have 3rd rail on your whole rail network, including freight yards. So in the end we will still have to wait for a Network Skins update...

The main problem with using it with wires is that they are straight between segment.

But yeh the whole thing relies on boformer who is a busy person :(

That's because the wires consist of only a few faces, and thus don't curve. If you make the rail from a lot of pieces, it will curve. Long story though.
