How would you like this power plant in New York City to be the first thing you see when you wake up in the morning?

I have had this on my pc for quite some time now (don't know where I found it, so thank to whoever took it). It's rather weird in one way and plain ugly in another!

It's...it's...upside-down... I wonder who (if anyone?) lives there!

That's not a power plant. That's the building that contains all the boilers for the heating system in all the buildings of Co-Op City. On a cold winter day, you can see white smoke coming up out of those black things on the roof. In the summer, it just sits there and waits for the weather to become cold again.

Sure, it ain't pretty, but function is more important than aesthetics in these cases.

Steam. Not white smoke, steam.

And I think that toppled house looks hilarious. It's probably a shop, as I doubt anyone would want to live there.

The ugly OCAD building a few pages back (I know it was already brought up... but it is just that ugly I have to do it again) has got to be the ugliest building in Canada atleast... If not it is THE ugliest building period. Nothing else in this thread is uglier or even compares.

Towering over the neighbourhood...

Apparently on the inside it is equally as ugly... Or so I hear first hand from people who have been in it.

The OCAD building really is hideous. It doesn't fit the neighbourhood at all. It's too bad as it's going to be there for a long time.

Having just returned from Japan, I'd say it looks like a "love hotel" where rooms are rented by the hour. They are often pink and have weird themes. At least this one has windows, a lot of them don't.

onlyplace4: If you BAT it, I will download it and put it in one of my cities. I mean, come on, my cities can't be 100% nice, they need ugliness too, just like real cities. If you do this project, I wish you luck and hope it is as ugly as it is in real life. Take it as a compliment that I am calling this potential BAT ugly, because if it wasn't ugly, there'd be a problem and *that* would be bad.

As soon as I saw that picture, I assumed it was a Gehry. It is pretty dreary and dull... except the shape. If it was a little mroe lively, it might not be half bad.

the Ontario College of Art & Design would acually make a very usefull bat. It is one of canada's priemere art school's .

Just the Sharp Center for Design is butt ugly. it had finished construction in September 2004 at a cost of 42.5 million (cost including renovations to other campus facilitys), and quoting from the ocad webpage it was "designed by acclaimed British Architect Will Alsop, of Alsop Architects, in a joint venture with Toronto-based Robbie/Young +Wright Architects Inc."

Personoly, my wish to attend the OCAD has long past and with architecture like that hidious eyesore, it does not inspire me in the least to rekindle the interest. That ain't art, that's trash.

I think the OCAD building is extremely beautiful. I interviewed Will Alsop not long after its completion on the nature of beauty, indeed.

He said:

"I think that’s an important distinction to make, that beauty comes from taking your eye off the ball. Now it’s a very difficult thing to define, what is beautiful, because we all have different attitudes towards that. But it’s important to try and make some definition towards of what beauty is.

“I think certainly in the urban context and in the architectural context it’s the ability to make a place or a space that you feel comfortable in when doing nothing. I think that’s a fair definition in much the same way that you can go into, say, somewhere like cathedrals, and it doesn’t matter whether or not you have any religious conviction, but to actually sit in those places is a very satisfying experience. It obviously touches the soul in some way or another. And I’m interested in that and I think it’s possible to do that even in the centre of rather busy and bustling cities.”

I tend to agree. And I like the Corbusier Ville Savoye and Ronchamps buildings, also. Much nicer than dreary, polite postmodern formality.

The "Palace of the Republic" in Berlin, house of the fake-Parliament of former East Germany, certainly one of the most ugliest buildings on this planet and finally getting demolished this year to be replaced with a reconstruction of the Imperial Palace, home of the Kings of Prussia and later the German Emperors. Finally a reminder that there actually was a german history before the Nazi-barbarians came.

In response to Aslop's comments on beauty...

I might not be able to define ugly, but I know it when I see it.  The OCAD wins this ugly contest hands down.  That is worse than this proposed building.  I know it wasn't built but it almost was.  Just imagine 4 stories of that mess.

The Blue Shirt.

Though it's not finished yet, I find this alien spaceship very, very ugly. I also live right across the street from it. I can't begin to image how hard it's going to be to go ANYWHERE when the games start.

The new Arizona Cardinals Stadium in Glendale. Waste of 355 million.

Funny you should mention this building.  It was designed and built for one person's private art collection many decades ago; hence the lack of any windows.  He didn't want anyone else seeing his collection.

He has since passed away, and the building is going to be renovated into a new art museum - the Museum of Arts & Design.  The renovation is being designed by a firm from Portland, Oregon (Allied Works).  Here's the website and the new look:

Interestingly, there have been protests by people in NYC as they don't want the old building to change.

im tired of hearing that suburban homes are ugly. i live in one and i dont think its ugly and it is a good clean and safe place to live. If you took a "Mcmansion" and stuck it in a small town and said it was built in the 40's people would say how maginificent it is. I know they are made of sawdust and glue nowadays but we are talking looks here.

They arent ugly at all. They just embody something many nerds who hang around urban planning sites loathe with a vengeance and therefore consider ugly.... i dont like sprawl either but these houses are in small towns that arent sprawl too you know...
