Not to be outdone by the Chinese, Kazakhstan has created an entire city of such buildings in the form of Astana, the national capital.

yG4qo.jpg

brb, going back to astana again....the buildings there look awesome!

Same with that macau lotus tower.  If stuff looked like this I would actually care about architecture.

The ugliest building here in Buenos Aires, for me, is the national library, made by Clorindo Testa. Just horrible.

A fail modern style, or I just don't know.

The world largest wooden single family house in Arkhangelsk, Russia

These Russian churches are not ugly. Only they are in a state of disrepair. If restored, they would be nice.

Anyways, today's pet peeve, the Atlantis hotel in Dubai. TBH, I adore lots of the projects going on out there, but this is crappy. Who in their right mind would stick a giant cloister arch in the middle of something?

You think a cloister arch is bad? Look at this building, also in Dubai...a horse's head!

I hope not finding a horses' head on the bed as a welcome pillow gift... :D

Are we forgetting the Cove Atlantis in the Bahamas??

It looks like Las Vegas meets the Sea. I'm pretty sure this was the designer's intention.

This is the newish building at 20 fenchurch street in London. Daubed the "walkie talkie" it is in my opinion truly horrific and a blight on the capital.

It's getting kind of hard to believe things are going to get better. I've been drowning to long to believe that the tides going to turn.

That's a typical brutalist building right there. I don't even know why people thought that those would be a good thing to build. If it weren't for the window designs, it would just be flat out ugly.

It is all about the form and the material. Brutalism arose from the International style (Corbusier, Wright, Saarinen) since some designers thought they weren't taking form and material into enough consideration. However odd as brutalism may seem, it is not unlike the all-glass skyscrapers that prevail today. Glass or concrete --> they both clad buildings in 99% of them either way you look at it.

My own personal hatred of buildings would be anything by Robert Venturi --- look him up, just terrible post-modernism. Along these lines -->  http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/29/V_Venturi_H_720am.JPG

Not sure if this was posted here; if so it deserves reposting.

Kaden Tower, outside Louisville, KY:

Honorable mentions:

New York State Library, Albany, NY:  Looks like the Dulles Airport terminal's retarded half-brother.

Lackawanna City Hall, Lackawanna, NY:  Apparently not only is it ugly, but also in quite bad repair according to a recent news article (just like everything else there).

He ought to feel lucky he didn't get much worse than that building.  He can have it.

Canadian National Rail tower in Edmonton what a world wonder of architecture this beauty is. A beautiful architectural product of Canada's regular flirtations with Communism.

Front end veiw of the Canadian National Rail tower in Edmonton. Of course the first building always noticed by any visitor to Edmonton. Its like a 30-story version of the Dick Cheney Building. What exactly was going on in 1982? You can tell the inside is probably like entering some kind of 1980's timewarp of plaid shirts, curly mullets and goggle glasses.

Canadian National Defence Building Ottawa....don't #$%^*& with us! ya that part on the roof with no windows is missle launchers...Canadian urban myth is this building is a space ship for the honourable Stephan Harper that can BLAST OFF! and that pasted flag on the side totally works with the building...not gona peel off or anything when the Honorable Stephen Harper blasts to outer space. It will be his space command centre as he coordinates RCMP efforts against evil environmentalist/ native agitators protesing pipeline expansions.

I guess we don't always need serious buildings and sometimes we can deviate from the norm a bit according to the taste of the architect and the developer. However, government buildings might have more restrictions to be simple and elegant. Anyway, I don't object as long as the occurrence is not excessive. As many people have not gone abroad before, it is good to recreate some foreign buildings.

There is also some designs of modern buildings adding traditional Chinese roof. Some architectural critics claim it is not necessary. I think it is ok as the architect designs. Many members of the mass public should think such design as adding interesting elements from the normal design.

Nothing wrong with these buildings.  If the Russian Orthodox style buildings in the top picture are in northeast China, particularly Manchuria, there is an explanation for it.  Russia went into Manchuria in the late 19th Century and dominated the region until the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05.  Russian style architecture can be seen in Manchurian cities such as Harbin.

The building in the second picture looks like a U.S. state capitol.  Could an American architect have designed it?  And Art Deco was a worldwide architectural style in the 1930s, which explains the two lower photos, although some Chinese elements are incorporated in them, which was often the case in many local regions.

The first one is an observatory built by Chinese in the 2000s. The second one is a governmental building built by Chinese in the 2000s.

You are right. The third and fourth buildings I read it in an architecture book that praises the later design removes the traditional roof element.

200511030036_51173.jpg

You can see quite a few modern buildings with such roof in China.

Sorry for being too lazy to explain.

The lack of windows and the absence of vehicles gives it a more "concrete bunker" vibe. The sparsity of decorations aside from the portraits don't help much, either.

Hmm, to be honest I don't really thinks those are bad at all, at least on this page.

Maybe just #741, first one of #712 have a bit of funny side on the roof.

First of #692 that's Genting... Well, casino & themepark, they tend to be a bit weird but still normal in architectural sense, just blame on the painting.

#694, quote on #697, #698, lower two of #703, Bank of China above, are completely fine work...

I think we can all agree that Robert Venturi's house is among the ugliest pieces of architecture ever made:

I don't. The chimney is just a bit too tall. The rest is fine.

This is the corner view. Utter lack of any symmetry or design. The right side of the house is 4 feet larger than left, the pseudo-chimney is god awful and none of the windows line up. Like the guy just threw windows in he had from other places with no design whatso ever.
