Personally, best should be a no-brainer in this community.

I agree with the OP. 4 rules 2013 stinks. The others lie somewhere in between. GlassBox was for me a massive dissapoinment and anticlimax after all the hype. I can only hope that Colossal Order might consider going into this genre more

    Personally, mine would be:

    Favorite: SC4

    Least Favorite: Societies

SimCity (latest) is half-decent, but I wouldn't get it in its current state.

SimCity 2013 could be improved enough to move up the chart.

    Best: SimCity 4

Why? It is highly moddable with more than 17000 mods in STEX, ultra low hardware requirements (even the oldest PC can run SC4 at least in medium graphics), and region play, that no other city building games can beat (Cities XL has bigger maps, but no region play, SC13 has, but the city tiles aren't contiguous)

    Worst: SimCity Societies

Why? No zoning, complicated social system while diminishing SC's city simulation part, too few road types, even worse than the first simcity)

Simcity 4 is the best Simcity ever made, but my favorite is Simcity 3000. Maybe because it's the first Simcity I played and because I spend more time in 300 than in 4. On the other hand, the new Simcity is one of the worst insults ever made. Maybe even worst than Empire Earth 3!

Out of the box, SC3000 was the best IMO, better than unmodified SC4 by a fair bit. But SC4 has to take honers when you factor in all the 3rd party content available.

As for 2013 being worse that Societies. Yeah... not quite.  2013 still has potential if ever opened up to the modding community. Societies was dead on arrival.

    Best: SimCity 4

    Worst: Societies

I think we all remember SC4 for what it is now, rather than what it was like at release. After all, lasting impressions do count. It's been a 10 year community effort that's completely revolutionised the game. So without this, who knows? Maybe SC3000 would still have the crown.

Personally, I've not played Societies. But from what I heard, it was a backwards step in the series (being more socially orientated), and doesn't build at all on the past games. Unfortunately, SC13 has followed a similar trend.

    favorite: SimCity 2013

worst: original simcity I couldn't play that now those stupid boxes and black dots for traffic.

I actually liked societies thought it added other stuff more societal stuff though which I guess doesn't have much to do with city planning

Played Sim City 3000 unlimited the most, I loved the 3 city sets, and all the different maps available at the time, and good traffic but freeway looked stupid I always wondered wtf was inside that freeway?

SimCity 4 I was upset by the original industrial bug, traffic disappearing, long term commercial skyscraper bug I could never get commercial high rises my tallest building was always that stupid big white condo, oh ya and the dreaded grain terminals I used to try to avoid those things as much as possible but seemed they would keep coming back I had nightmares about those thing dam grain terminals on every effin corner. Didn't like how those bugs were so bad so that we had to mod, but I guess the modding was well done and I am glad so many of you are great programmers to do that stuff.

    Best: SimCity 4

    Worst: SimCity Societies

Societies was actually the first SimCity game I got. However, I hated how you were so limited in many aspects of the game, and how when you got to a reasonable population, the game started lagging a lot

I came across SimCity 4 in 2008 and found the modding community about a year after. I loved the game before I even found mods, which says a lot about the playability of the game. Once I'd found mods, there was no going back, and the number of plugins available easily make it one of my favourite games of all time, let alone my favourite in the SimCity series.

I don't even consider Societies a true SimCity game... More of a side game like SimCity Creator or Streets of SimCity.

My favorite has to be SC3000. However if we're including mods then SC4 blows it out of the water.

Least favorite apart from Societies is the new game: SimCity (2013).

Yeah does this poll consider mods or not? Because if it does then SimCity 4 is the best, however if we are just going by the vanilla game, then I would have to say SimCity 3000 is the best.

SC3K is the best out of the box, but SC4 is the best since the adding of 80% or so of custom mods and stuff. If it wasn't for all of us having created a better SC4, I'd still be playing SC3K.......missing those hurricanes and fires... ;)

The worst, well..... if I consider the little time (not quite two weeks), I spent with SC2013, I would say it's the worst ever. Nothing makes sense nor functions properly and logically. I didn't like SCS neither, but I played more often with it.

Best:  Original Simcity for PC, circa 1989/1990

Why?  Because it was REVOLUTIONARY.  Those who were there know what I'm talking about.  For those that were not there...think Cell Phone revolutionary.  The ability to print out your city on your fine dot-matrix printer was mind-blowing.  The graphics were extraordinary for EGA (yes, young tike, before VGA was EGA...and before that CGA).  The idea that you could simulate a city was (and still is) thinking way outside the box for what you would expect from a game.

The biggest competition SC1 had was King's Quest, Ultima 2, and Bard's Tale!  Nothing even scratched the surface of the greatness SC1 was until Sid Meier and his Civilization 1 came along about a year later.  Sure Simcity 4 is great....but in its day, the original was leaps and bounds superior to all its competition in gaming.  SC4 wasn't even the best game the year it came out.

Note that I consider 2K to still be the best "Sim City" experience.

    Worst:  2013

Why?  I don't need to answer this.

I went with the original SimCity as well for my favorite, but I played the SNES version, so I'll state my reasons for that particular iteration.  It was the first video game I ever played, and even playing it now on the Wii (Virtual Console yay!), it makes me feel happy.  It's fun.  Yeah, it's simple, there aren't any hills or custom content or even a terrain editor, and if you use the 999,999 cheat code it's incredibly easy.  But, the music was cool, the scenarios were interesting with interesting secondary problems to solve, and there was still a fair amount of challenge in the game if you really went looking for it.  Plus, the manual was even cool!  I want to enjoy playing a game, and let's face it, the SimCity games are games, and if I am forced to choose a favorite video game of all time, I would absolutely choose the SNES SimCity without hesitation.

I chose SC:S as the worst, but honestly, I cannot truthfully answer that question.  I never played SC:S, and I will not play SC2013 while it's held hostage behind Origin, so I can't say whether or not those two are crummy games.  I loved SC2K, and I found that the most challenging one to play.  I spent a lot of nights at my friend's house playing that game.  SC3K was fun, too, and while the graphics were certainly better, I'm not sure that I can say it's a better game than SC2KSC4 is awesome, with awesome custom content pushing it to limits I'm fairly certain no one imagined ten years ago at launch, but with 3 gigs of downloads in my plugins folder, it has a horrid loading time and a horrid crash-to-desktop problem that clearing out at least two thirds of the junk in there will probably help solve.  Until then, I must say that SC4 in its current state on my hard drive is the worst of the four that I've played.

    SNES SC #1 WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Aaaah yes - Kings Quest, Police Quest, Silent Service... Those were the days.  I remember playing the original SimCity for hours at a time, and it certainly was a revolutionary game.  I am still going to pick SC4 as the top, simply because region play finally gave us sim-nerds a chance to play outside the box.  No longer were we confined to a pre-defined square.  Farmland, Mountains, suburban sprawl, you name it - SC4 made it possible.  Up until SC4, the goal was always to get the biggest best metropolis, and that was certainly fun, but region play gave us a chance to think and play outside the box and create something entirely new.

For me, SC4 has been the best City simulator ever!!!  I did enjoy playing SC2000 (my first) and SC3000 Unlimited.  I am still playing SC4 and the new content available keeps it fresh and alive.

I stayed away from Societies.  Guess I wasn't impressed with the concept.  I have not gotten SimCity 2013 yet.  I definitely do not like being forced to be online to play or not being able to save a region/city on my hard drive.  That's just wack!

IMO, SimCity 4 is obviously the best, while I think the SimCity 2013 is the worst, due to the DRM, lack of terraforming, etc.....

My favorite SimCity game I have played is SimCity 4: Deluxe + a big plugin folder. My least favorite game I have ever played is SimCity 4 without Rush Hour or mods. All the other PC games fall somewhere between them. --Ocram

I have not yet played SC2013 but i would say the best I have played is SC4 and the worst is SC Societies. SC4 has more realistic ways on how a city works and is built. SC Societies requires every building to be selected and plopped rather than growing as an actual city

Best: SC2K, followed by SC4, followed by SC3K.  Sadly, Classic doesn't hold up so well in terms of playability, etc. 25 years on.  Worst: SimCity (2013).  I give Societies a dishonorable mention, as the focus on placing everything makes it not a SimCity game to me.

The main issue I have with 4 is the Region-level stuff (which never appealed to me and which was never worth the effort to get right).  NAM and so forth did wonders for the game, but trying to work with all the puzzle pieces was a pain and you could easily get stuck having to re-lay blocks of road that "reverted" if you demolished the wrong pieces.  SC2K beats it (and SC3K, which also had some issues as well) out for several reasons...not the least of which happens to be the disasters, I must confess.

I honestly think that as far as the simulation and the fun in the game is concerned, SC3k pretty much blows everything else out of the water. I remember how addicting the game used to be, and I really feel like they got it right. It was a fun game with a lot of great features, and the graphics really weren't all that bad for the game's time.

Of course my tastes have changed in more recent years. Simcity 4 (especially with custom content) is the one that I have enjoyed the most. There was quite a learning curve, but it didn't take me too long to "figure out" the game. Of course I'm willing to give CitiesXL a good mention as well. Although simulation-wise it falls far behind SC4 and SC3K, the game has many strong points that more than make up for its flaws, especially considering how much content is included, the great graphics, curved roads, large maps, etc... included and unique to the game.

As far as the worst game in the series is concerned, I'm going to have to say societies carries the title. I played it briefly, and I shut it down after only an hour. I won't even bother wasting my time explaining why I didn't like the game, other than the fact that it completely derailed the positive momentum created by previous versions of Simcity. Some people like societies, but most who preferred previous versions of Simcity and played it for the large scale simulation will probably pretty much agree that the game feels like it is appealing to a different concept entirely. It just doesn't feel like simcity to me.

As far as SC2013 is concerned, I have yet to try it, but I'm not marking it off quite yet. Given that an offline mode and modding are coming soon, it's quite possible that the game may redeem itself in time.
