Middle Tenne: Memories of Four

Welcome to Elm Grove!

Four precocious four year old cats will tell you the story of Elm Grove, their hometown. These littermates are best friends and had at one time considered going into business together. That is, until they decided to enlist in the Schulmania National Army. Now stationed at Fort Wirt, the four have entertained their platoon with stories of their hometown. Let’s join in…

Seen here in a tactical training exercise, we see clockwise from top left Marsha, Lee, Tim and Todd.

“Remember that time we were over at the Manor?” began Tim and Todd, as they started to chuckle.

“You got in big trouble! Hahahaha!” added Marsha.

“It’ wasn’t our fault!” Tim countered, looking indignant and causing the girls’ eyes to roll… “After all, …” he continued, “…how was I supposed to know you were supposed to kill the mouse before bringing it in the house? I was just a kitten!”

Marsha continued to laugh at him, thinking back to the scene where young Tim brought his first trophy in, only to have it run like crazy through the whole building. It took three staff members to corner it.

“Oh yeah?” countered the humbled Tim. “I remember when you got treed BY A SQUIRREL! So there!”

Marsha replied with a hiss…

“We had some good times in the old neighborhood” started Todd. “Remember that Halloween? That was like, the funnest ever!”

“Not for me!” laughed Lee. “You weren’t the one stupid enough to wear a mouse costume for trick or treating!”

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!” cackled Todd. “That was hil-arious! I never saw anyone run that fast before!”

“Yeah… I was afraid I was gonna be the treat!” Lee got out between hearty guffaws…

“Hey, Marsha,” began Lee, “remember when we were at the preschool… and we followed Tommy out into the woods during recess to find his secret fort?”

“Yep! And it turns out he got lost trying to find it…”

“When we finally got back to the playground, we were so late we missed snack time.”

“That reminds me, Tommy still owes me a can of Fancy Feast for that one…. Hehehe.”

“HAHAHAHA!! Lee! Remember when you first tried to cross the Barbershop Bridge?”

“Don’t remind me….” Lee groaned.

“You were so scared of heights that you got halfway across and froze! Your claws were stuck in so hard mom had to pry you off the roadbed! HAHAHAHAHAHA!”

“Oh yeah? I got plenty on you too, Todd!”

“Oh yeah? Like what?” Todd asked, knowing that he was setting himself up…

“Like that time we went downtown to the Leech Apothecary and you got caught using the sunglasses display tree as a scratching post…

Or when you used the litterbox in the paint tray at Peg’s House of Garish Paints…

Or that time you….”

“ENOUGH! I surrender!” Todd moaned.

“One of my favorite memories,” Marsha started, “was our first trip to the neighborhood pub. The Milk Saucer was so chic and elegant… we were all dazzled!”

“Yeah,” Tim said, “who would have imagined so many rhinestones could fit inside one interior space? It’s like a herd of Bedazzlers roosted there for the winter….”

“Tim, you know you love it.”

“No way! If you turn your head you get this freakish disco ball effect going on!”

“Maybe so, but the first time we went it, we all felt as royal as The Supreme Wirdle surrounded by diamonds.”

“Well, I like to hang out at that new Port Matthew seafood place down by the park now. But, do you remember when that corner storefront was occupied by Lenny Longtail’s rocking chair store? Whatever happened to Lenny, anyway?”

“

“I think he’s at Elm Grove Community College now.”

“I was planning on going there, too, before the war started. I was going to major in Feline Appreciation… and then you guys could appreciate me more! HA!”

“NEVER!! You’d better appreciate me!”

“Marsha, you and I appreciate the Tweety’s Cat Café… remember that wacky New Year’s Eve party?”

“Sure, Lee. I remember that was the WORST karaoke singing I ever heard! HAHAHAHAHA!”

“Hey, it wasn’t that bad!”

“Oh yeah?! MICE came out of their holes wearing earplugs to beg you to stop!”

“The best part was when they agreed to be backup singers for me in my amazing rendition of the Meow Mix Song? It was brilliant! Besides, I remember something else wacky about that night…”

“Remember that Todd was later getting to the party? He was working late at the store. Buuuuuuut, remember what we found out later?”

Todd interjected, “Hey! Everybody makes a mistake now and then!”

Lee continued, “Someone had gotten into the catnip a little early that night…”

Todd, sheepishly, added, “Hey! Don’t mention the lampshade I wore on my head to the party!.... Oops, … pretend I didn’t say that!”

“Yep! And we had church in the morning… and poor Todd was purring so loud through the service that he got shushed… from the pulpit! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

“Yep, those were fun times… we should go back there when we get some leave time and have some fun!”

“But Todd had better stay away from the catnip aisle in the store!”

“No fair!” replied Todd!

“Besides,” Todd added, “I will be going to the market and buying the stuff to make my own catnip tea… I have some new recipes to try.”

“Sure ya do, pal! Hic! Hic! HAHAHAHAHA!”

“Tim, what would you do on leave?”

“I would head to the park and climb some trees. I understand the juiciest pigeons will be in season and I intend to pounce on them!”

“Sounds delicious! I will bring my catnip tea and join you. What about you, Marsha?”

“Once I get home, I am sure adventure will be there, just waiting for me…”
