Middle Tenne: Elm Grove

On the eastern shore of Lake Meltonhill, another town rises up to meet the morning mist. Elm Grove is nearly opposite Cedar Hill Chapel. And, like its neighbor, it consists of a mainland part and an island. And, as one might imagine, plenty of elm trees.

Welcome to Elm Grove!

The central business district is on the mainland and the island consist primarily of housing. The two are connected by the Barbershop Bridge, a small stone bridge named for the Elm Grove Barber Shop, first business opened in the town.

The Barbershop Bridge was built by Yellerfeller Buses & Bridges of Greater East Tenne from locally quarried granite

Elm Grove Barber Shop will remove any mats you get in your fur as well as comb or brush your fur. There are also flea shampoos, but that costs extra.

We begin our tour on the mainland, where the business district is. The cluster of shops and offices faces the waterfront and backs up to the extensive Elm Grove Park. The park is a wildlife sanctuary and wilderness area. There are several access points to the park from town.

Elm Grove Park can be accessed from the heart of town by several points, including this one by Parkside Terrace Manor, home of Parkside Grill and Dolce & Catbana, purveyors of fine 100% pure cat fur sweaters.

Once you leave the short path, you are in the open woods. It is a wildlife sanctuary, so no pouncing on anything!

Busscastle Chocolates has opened a boutique on the corner of the square. Next door, Ceiling Cat Roofers & Home Repairs offers inspirational remodeling and roofing services, specializing of course in ceilings.

Elm Grove Center is the town’s major marketplace. It includes a grocery store, dance studio, shade tree mechanic and much, much more. Across the street is Elm Grove School, offering a comprehensive feline curriculum to students of all ages.

Nearby is the 1974 Building, a lovely office building named for its low rental rates, 19.74 schulmonetas per year. Many local entrepreneurs hone their crafts and hawk their wares from this spot. One of the more creatively named ones is “The Peep Show”… a retailer of fine windows for felines to look out from while indoors.

The main street is the lake’s circumferential road. In Elm Grove, it is known as Middle Tenne Avenue. Plenty of shops line this thoroughfare.

When we look at a wider view of downtown Elm Grove, we can see that it is dominated by the site of the town’s church, Our Lady of the Eternal Fur Shedding. The church boasts the nation’s first Stratocaster-Harpsichord, which makes for a very different sound for hymns. The grounds are also a favorite for strolling and catching the unwary pigeon or squirrel.

Surprisingly enough, the cluster of businesses next to it is known as Church Square…

Come hear the Stratocaster-Harpsichord tonight… there’s a free concert of holiday music. Music Director Les Paul will be performing.

Now, I notice that we have not yet ventured onto the island. And it is the island that has most of the elms from which the town gets its name. The island is partially open space and the balance is mostly small homes. Let’s take a look…

The southern half of the island

Cat Head Road runs the length of the island. It is lined with homes, most of which are on the lake side.

At the end of Cat Head Road is Murphy Manor, the finest home in town

At the other end is the Elm Grove Preschool, a place for kittens to come to learn and play. To qualify, the kittens must have their eyes opened and be weaned.
