Atkinos: Risa - Vacation Paradise

Everyone knows Risa Beach, the town on the southern shore of the Tenne Sea, whose existence is due to the tourist trade. With its signature Sand Wirdle landmark, 5-star resort and upscale shopping, Risa has been a perennial top destination for tourists from all over the Alpha Quadrant. But, things have been slow for a while at Risa and businesses are hurting. The war against Queensferry has reduced vacationing for Schulminions. And, various visitors have been visiting less or spending less as well. Klingon visits are down 29% due to trouble with Tribbles and spending from Ferengi is down 14% due to a poor exchange rate for slips of latinum. Worse yet, Betazoid weddings have been cancelled due to concerns over sunburn. The biggest problem was an influx of pesky Vorlons looking for “undisclosed merchandise”. These troubles have caused businesses to falter and cut down gift shop revenue (the #2 source of income for the Atkinos District Government) by nearly a third. And, if this wasn’t enough, increasing competition from upscale resorts elsewhere has been eroding Risa’s market share and name recognition.

Governor Cawale received a group from the Risa Chamber of Commerce at her office and listened to their concerns. They requested a grant for advertising and an additional 10,000 schulmonetas for infrastructure upgrades. Governor Cawale considered their proposal and then offered instead a 500,000 schulmoneta grant for a large scale redevelopment and upgrade to Risa, provided that the business community could raise a matching 500,000. And, as noted in the Schulmania Blog late last year (http://schulmania.info/blogengine.net/post/2011/10/Risa-Upgrade.aspx) , the Risa Chamber’s request to allow motor vehicles for tourists was approved. Now, Risa Beach will be the second town in Schulmania to allow motorized vehicles. The proposed license plate for Risa has also been approved. And, to further the program, Admiral Hestorb will be the official spokescat and will hold her second honeymoon at Risa during the unveiling of the upgrades. The Chamber of Commerce needed nearly 3 months to raise the half million gold coin fee to start the project. The expansion plan drawn up by Picard+Riker Architects, LLC is sure to be a jaw dropper. The proposal calls for preserving the traditional Island Style architecture, the historic waterfront with the iconic Sand Wirdle, and adding in top of the line, world class modern amenities. The new Risa Beach will be a town unlike any Schulmania has ever seen. And this new town will surely beckon tourists from across the Alpha Quadrant for years to come.

The Chamber of Commerce has a new slogan for Risa Beach as well: “All new! And all for you!” They also commissioned the snazzy logo shown above, which will be used on Risa-related tourist information and trinkets for sale. The slogan replaces the former one “What happens in Risa stays in Risa” which has been used since 2007. The slogan is Risa’s third. The original, “Got Jamaharon?” was used for some time before the change in 2007.

The scale of construction has dazzled Schulminons, which would seem hard to do after the surprise unveiling of the massive Wirdleplex. But, The Wirdleplex is a military district. This is a wholesale modernization of a central Schulminion city. And, in order to compete successfully against tourist draws in other places, fully modern facilities and amenities are needed. Pickard+Riker Architects have responded in grand fashion, creating a city with everything anyone could ever want. With the sweeping scope of this head-turning development in the heart of Schulmania, the hand of change which first showed itself in Friendsville has moved to the south Tenne coast. To announce this change to the galaxy, Admiral Hestorb will be the Mistress of Ceremonies and will be the first guest in the new resort. 5. Drivers must obey all posted road signs and advisories

6. No vehicle may be started or operated if a feline is sitting on it or near it

Just in case you are wondering, the next update features a town, like most, which is inspired by an actual place (but of course with a Schulminion twist). And in Tenne, almost everything is named for some place in Tennessee. Well, this one is dedicated to the town of Elza, a place which didn't amount to much until WW2. Here's the place which will be translated into Schulmania next:

Yes, during WW2, security was so tight that even ol' Saint Nick had to have a badge and be searched...

(Incidentally, the photographer is still with us and is having his 90th birthday today. So, the town of Elza Gate is dedicated to Ed Westcott. )
