Technology Crisis!

 

 

Let me tell you what's gone wrong with my technology and maybe you have a solution. I am not sure what is going on but I cannot get to anything on my computer ATM because it won't respond to the monitor (or vice versa), For the moment Schulmania is in stasis as I cannot see it to get to anything. Here's the chronology:

 

Technology:

A few (3 or 4) years old WIn 7 HP PC with a HP monitor... everything was running just fine and incident free until yesterday

 

Yesterday PM:

iTunes asked me to update itself so I said yes. It tried and failed. Said I didn't have access (admin level) to make changes, though I do. I went through a few trials and it never would update. So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. It got 99.9% through installing and insisted I didn't have access to change the Apple Mobile Control Device (which I do... and I even installed with "run as admin"). Still no luck.

 

So I gave up and moved on to other business, such as Schulmania updates, and figured I would try iTunes Friday again. Before I went to bed I got an error message saying some program (didn't say which, but I assume was iTunes related) was unable to access (or some such thing) Microsoft Visual Basic C++. The error message did not give me any options to do anything... just a notification.

 

When I went to bed, everything was just fine minus the missing iTunes.... everything else seemed to be in good working order and running just fine.

 

This morning:

Turned on everything and the PC started just fine. Monitor turned on and then went to sleep, claiming there was no signal. I tried turning every component on and off to no avail. The computer's light turns on, the fan runs and such but the monitor says no input. I check and rechecked every connection between the two and all are fine. I even tried hooking up my old computer monitor to see if it was the monitor's problem but I got the same no signal result.

 

 

So.... any thoughts as to what may be going on and how to fix it? Any help would be most gratefully appreciated!

I can offer no assistance except for one thing; have you backed up your work/cities/pictures to an external hard drive or memory stick or through online storage? I hope you have external backups in addition to the folder backups you must have in computer.

I had a problem after unistalling iTunes that messed up the disk drive drivers so I had to reinstall them after some messing around, but there weren't any other problems. After putting in an older version of iTunes I just made it never update again. No idea how to deal with the problem here short of either getting professional tech support, or getting a new computer and taking the hard drive out of the old one and using it as an external drive, at least to get the data off of it.

I'm using Win 8.1 64 bit and it has been working like a charm for me, no problems, nothing.

 

Specs: GTX 760, 8GB DDR3 RAM, I5 4440K.

Im running SC4 on W8. The only problem I've had is if you go back and forth between the game and desktop (be it through the windows button or ctrl+esc) the game will crash after a few of those.

 

Other than that, it's fine on W8

NEVER ctrl+esc whilst running SC4! Especially with a large plugins folder, also it slightly damages your computer's file structure so after a while you will need to run a disc defragmenter.

Successfully installed SC4 on the new computer... tomorrow I attempt to recover the Schulmania files on the disabled HD. Wish me luck!

It has been working well for me! Although, it does still CTD fairly often, perhaps a little more. Not entirely sure to be completely honest.

I did switch to Steam version though, as my disks were starting to go.

 

But overall, it works well.

I'm going to be backing up my writing on dvd tomorrow.  Oh my, I can't imagine having to go through recovering all that.  Very scary.  I hope you can get it organized and back up to normal in an efficient manner!

I am pleased to report that the Schulmania restoration has been an overwhelming success! There appears to be little to no data loss and everything seems to be functioning properly. Other than some minor performance issues of the game itself, Schulmania is now officially back and in power!!!!
