Btw, I've taken inspiration from your around the edges method and I'm growing mine in a similar fashion. I'm using the outermost two tiles as I go. *;)

I noticed that.*;)  Also noticed your region is hand drawn?  When I first started out making maps in '06, all of them were hand drawn... probably drew over 50-60 maps, all of which are still available here on the STEX.  Then I learned how to take elevation data and turn them into maps, one of which I'm using now obviously, but then out of the clear blue, both SC4Terraformer and terragen just refuse to load and I can't figure out why.   Frustrating because I wanna go get more of the Congo River of which my current region is of.

Nope.

I'm using a significantly modified version of Torben's Offline Planet Generator Program. I've kept his C code for the tetrahedral subdivision fractal map creation part and then I've re-written most of the rest to match up with SC4 including direct output of an 8 bit renderable grayscale map as well as generating my version of the game's internal topographical heights mini map (as a whole region). Then another output uses @Cyclone Boom's SimEarth color file to create a satellite-ish view which looks like there are forests all over the place.  (His color scheme is based on SC4 heights too.) Pics of these can be found with my STEX file.

My most recent coding additions include the sea inversion to land and flattened terraces on both sides of the remaining lakes/rivers.

My region of Hebron has reached the ripe old age of 275.  If compared with previous post of Hebron, you will notice that the region continues to grow as the cities move into the green spaces.  Thanks to the Farm Preservation Act of 263, it is now a lot harder to develope farm land (though not impossible).  There is still much to be done in the region.  My goal is to reach over 1 million sims and then start with the MMPs to enhance the look of the region.

Where did you get this region?

I used drunkapple's Bris Vegas region (located here).  However, I found his map too large so I "shrunk" the region my modifying the size of the grey scale and created my own config.bmp.  Shrinking the region made the mountains steeper and more rugged.  I think it actually turned out quite nice.

That looks a lot like Brisbane Austrailia.  I had made an 11x14 large tile map of the area a number of years ago.  Fun map to play on.

Latest update on Riversmeet, three more tiles completed and now the region's pop is over a halk million, with 600k industrial workers and 500k farm workers.

One image of the whole region and a close up of the area being developed at the moment.

When I play the game, the session can go all day, up to 12 hours at a time and I played quite a few times since the last posted an update.  Eventually I'll go back into those completed tiles and pretty them up a bit with more trees and such.  That's what takes a long time to do, planting all them trees.

Nice looking rural region you have going there.  Interesting name for your region.  Every time I see it, can't help but think of the Millenium Falcon since it was a Corillian YT1300 freighter.  It's also where Han Solo is originally from, Corillia, according to the now tossed out expanded universe.  I bet the Han Solo film will change that when the film hits theaters this coming Memorial Day Weekend.

You are correct, it is Brisbane Australia.  I'm not sure why drunkapple called it Bris Vegas, but oh well.  I agree, it is a fun map to play on.  There is so much variety of terrain, plenty of coast line, and the many creeks/rivers.  You can really be creative on it.  Probably the main reason I chose it.

Quite a useful little trick I've learned is the "Flora Blast" command. This allows trees to be planted in batch with a set coverage radius and density, and is included in the game without even needing the Extra Cheats DLL. For example, the following will completely fill a tile with the Maxis flora brush:

flora blast 3000 3000 3000

Open the command box (Ctrl+X), enter the command and press Enter.

The 3 numerical options to adjust the density are:

<Center Count> <Outside Count> <Coverage Radius>

Depending on the size of the city tile and your system, it may hang for around 30 seconds to 1 minute while the trees are planted in the background.

Here's a preview using the above (3000 x3) on a large tile, showing the pines and shrubs on higher elevations:

Flora Blast Tree Coverage 3000.jpg

It's still quite an arduous task to cover an entire region, but this can be a useful timesaver while ensuring consistency.

How about one of Cori's Dumb Questions? What happens if you blast a tile that is already zoned and grown? *:???:

Either one of two things:

  1. The trees are planted over the top of the development to the maximum extent possible.
    OR
  2. Everyone flees, and the city is completely destroyed. The result is a mass unstoppable and irreversible implosion across the entire region. Civilization is sent back before medieval times, and all that remains are trees, trees and more trees. Game over.

Thanks for the tip Cyclone Boom  I'll keep that in mind.

I guess I should better explain what I meant.  If you've looked at my region on the previous page, you can see my farming areas are always zoned with a space between them so I can use that space for trees, which acts as a good border between farm plots.  When I develop the tile for farming, I used to wait until everything developed (the entire tile) and then go in and lay the trees in.  That took forever to do, so now when I zone and develop a portion of the tile, before doing any more zoning and simming, I lay the trees in right away and it saves a bit of time to do.  As for the entire region, only time I did that was when I was uploading maps to be played on to make them more appealing.

@JurisicSantiago the region is an amalgamation of various other regions and thus not available at the moment, I'll look into how much hassle it'd be to prep the files for upload.

from my experience, it's simply to open the region on the SC4Mapper and to export a SC4M copy of it.

That is a nice region.  Really nice.  Real world or fantasy?

Afaik it's a map that was meshed together from several of DrunkApples real world maps. For example the large island in the middle of the map is Montreal
