About This File

This is my first upload to the STEX and my first creation.

The Torch is completely out of my own imagination and features 10'000 CO$$$ jobs.

No night lighting whatsoever because I didn't know how to do it.

Just extract the .rar file into your plugins folder. The trees are Giraffes Norway Maples you can find on the LEX here: https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2740

Enjoy!

What's New 1.0

Released

I forgot to add the Handrails. I have packed all the files into the the .rar that you can extract into your plugins folder.

You will still need to download the trees here though: https://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2740

First: I know that many people don't like lower ratings, but when I give something different from a 5/5 is because I think the creator has talent and potential for improvement, and that my comment can help with that. That aside...

Wow, this is a seriously cool first building! The overall shape is great, really bold post-modern style without necesarily losing realism or too many internal square metres.

Now, what could make this better:

  • A better reflection map, with smaller elements and less distinguishable shapes, as the current one looks like your building were sorrounded by one huge groundscraper. Some BATters have shared their reflection maps, so you can look on their dev threads for that.
  • More thinking on internal space and structure: how your building transfers weight from the higher floors to the ground, and how much tension it applies to the internal structure. Consider also that you need to have elevator shafts inside, and they are forcibly vertical. A trick architects do is to extend the shape of their buildings way over their real structure, allowing the external 'skin' more free-form without compromising stability; but on that case it should be relatively visible from the outside (as translucency, mainly).
  • Related to that, your building should have some machinery added, as the tip of elevator shafts, A/C units, cranes for window-cleaning equipment, antennaes, etc. That 'roofjunk' is usually invisible from ground level, but gets much more protagonism from the drone perspective of the game. If you don't want to ruin the top of your tower with ugly roofjunk, devise a way to hide it from view: screen it over with perforated metal plates, extend glass panels over the real height of the building, put the A/C units and elevator motorisation on a side building or a mechanic floor on the middle of the tower, etc. Glass cleaning is probably the hardest thing to hide realistically.
  • Work more on the lot or outrightly discard that task. You can legitimely be a great BATter without being also a skillful lotter, and in fact, most BAT artists on the community don't make complex lots. You can publish your building with a barebones lot and invite dedicated lotters to improve on that. If you want to do both, it's also great, but is more work.
  • Ease your modding using the PIM-X. You don't need to evaluate how many people lives or works on your building when a software took can do it for you, while keeping the correct balance between size and capacity.

Also, a couple of minor tips that are useful too:

  • Use ZIP when loading files, as not everybody has an OS capable of installing your favourite format of compression. Use a different compression method only if the content justifies it (for example, I uploaded a texture mod as 7z because it reduced the file to a 10% of it's original size).
  • Make yourself a BAT development thread where to share your unfinished work, recieve suggestions and ideas from other BAT artists or players. And check the dev threads of other people too! It's not only useful to get ideas and learn techniques, but also to see how great BATters became what they are now, as everyone has humble origins and commited learning errors.

Overall, your concept and work is great but you have much more space to improve. I'm certain that in some months we'll be seeing absolutely perfect creations from you if you persevere, but for now it's a 4 over 5 stars. Keep the good work!

Man, this is awesome and a wonderful different design to include in any city.  Please give us more unique buildings.  Do you know how to do buildings with marquees, lights, buildings with flash ala Vegas, Times Square NY, etc.?   :)
