Must have Mods for Orion

Issues that have been plagued players since the game's release is now answered. Some says it is the holy grail of all mods. Some says this mod + buy game/reinstall. That's right, 3k extended border aka "bigger city".

Understanding the mechanics of Orion 3k Extended Boundary.

1. Upon entering 3k extended map. based on (Image #1), The 3k map extended on North and East. Use right click mouse button or middle mouse button to bring up the compass.

2. Regional Roads are needed to draw them outside 2k map. Such as Project Akar : UI Enhancements, that offers almost every roads available to be drawn outside 2k.

3. Regarding Land Value, please refer the image below. There a lot of misunderstanding as well as misconceptions about the land value data, that was viewed in the map data.

  • The Actual Land Value EFFECTS are still intact as they are. It does not resized regardless in or outside 2k. Believe it or not. It still the same. There are claims that users may have experiences getting different wealth RCI in certain unwanted areas. These confusions is only because  we can't determine the actual "spot" of land value throughout 3k extended border, and the data from the Land Value map seems false but not entirely false information. It was compressed 4:1
  • This also applied on Pollutions, Ground Pollutions, Futurizations etc.

4. Regarding Resources. Unlike Land Value/Pollutions etc That was compressed 4:1. All Resources are stretched 1:4, see Image #3 and #4 to get better understanding on them.

  • This 1:4 stretched map data also effects oil, water, coal and ore.

Lag and memory issues

Its common knowledge that lags or frame-rate drops are known for almost every game that pushes its limits unless the users has a high-end computers. It covers almost every aspect from 3D rendering, physics (engine), memory calculations that the game generates etc. Orion (3k Extended boundary) does not lag the game itself, only that the additional space it provides for users to built in and as the city developed and getting dense - it'll stress your computer hardware.

We cant blame the game for the lags, it just happen that once we push the game to its limit, we might as well be done with better hardware.

The Game's Limitations

1. All trees outside the default border cant be remove, because there is no tree, its a facade. Only way to remove them is to edit the region map files.

2. The game already provide its regional transit, from air to land and water. We can't add Maglevs/Subways/EL and Streetcars to work between two different city vice versa. Please "make do" with the given features of each city tiles carefully.

3. There's a limit count of how many roads/buildings that can be drawn/build per city tile

  • Roads : 1024
  • RCI : 2048
  • Base Buildings : 4096 (not yet confirmed)

Is it possible to place the cities next to eachother in this like in SC4 now? And is terraforming possible?

4. The original map of land value, pollutions, water etc will be misaligned (visually). Example, you plop a $$ park, the land value indicates is slightly off set from the park itself. This offset issues does not effect residential or commercial buildings. Same goes to air pollutions, you may get your industrial pollutions few meters away from its original buildings, it does not effect residential even if its visualized so on pollutions map. What concerns me the most is ground pollutions, similar to air pollutions, it darkened the soil off set from its original buildings, Use Ground Scrubber to tackle this issues.

AAAAAAh most of this is bullshit, ITS NOT JUST VISUALLY! change the description got damn! yes I'm angry for now for 3 reasons,

1. You do not respond to our/my feedback.

2. You keep updating your other mods but nothing is happening here! if your not gonna update or you cant don't put it out there when its this bad.

3. I take what you write seriously. If you say its visually only I will believe you and doubt myself to a point. But when I again and again have to drops my citys due to pollutions is all over the place physically!!! I get freaking mad!

Hey Blackkatt, just a reminder that the modders are all volunteer users who are doing their best to create content for the rest of us. They do this in their spare time, so yelling at them or getting angry is pretty harsh considering they are work long hours for us for nothing.  If you think there is a problem, why not report it politely with some images, tests etc to show why you think it's not working - just like you would with an IT problem or software bug.

I've done that already. Volunteer or not they do it because they think its fun so you can't see it as a sacrifice! It's a hobby like any else...

I just plum can't get this to work. I've got everything in the right place, follow the steps described exactly... and no change. Nothing. I am running on Linux with Wine but that shouldn't make a difference?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled, cleaned out the folder. Nothing?

Anybody got any ideas?

I'm sure you've done it already... but just to be sure - did you claim a new plot, exit right out of SC (not just to the main menu) then relaunch and go back in to that plot?  That's when you should see the larger boundary lines.  Good luck with it!

Wow, after reading like 20 pages trying to make this work, you solved my issue! Should clarify on the front page that you need to exit ALL the way out of game, and not just to the menu. Thanks!

8. Yes you can zone residential, commercial, industrial outside, in one condition, you need connect the tile's original roads with the regional roads and use CTRL+Zone

9. Can only plop on North and East outside 2k - Use your right click button or middle mouse button on the mouse to find out the direction.

Still, yelling at them isn't going to accomplish anything.  They still do it for free, and they do it for fun, not because they owe you anything.

Personally I'm very happy that anyone is trying to attempt to make bigger maps at all.

I'm giving up.  I've gone through this entire comment section so many times now.  This just isn't worth it.

I've installed Udon.  I've installed Orion3.  I've installed Akar.  I know these are installed correctly.  I've made new plots, new regions.  Orion works, the road menu just will not populate with anything.

Someone had the same issue and it didn't look like they had it resolved either.  The author should definitely add that there are mods that need to be installed before installing this one.  Considering that this mod was just featured on IGN, you're going to have more frustrated people downloading this and running into the same issues.  You might want to update this.

I'll check back next year to see how much progress there is.

Hello, I was just checking to see if there has been any progress with this mod? I downloaded and installed the mod back when it first came out and while it definitely worked there were a lot of wonky issues, pretty much all the things described under the overview. I was wanting to check in and see if there have been any breakthroughs in correcting some of those oddities? things like the distorted land maps (land value, water tables, etc) can be really problematic. Also only being able to build out on certain sides is kind of odd as well. Anyways, great mod all in all, but as it stands I don't feel the urge to use it for actual building.

It would be great if EA would suck it up and admit this is clearly possible (since their last public statement said it was not), and let one of their developers spend a few weeks working on a patch to get around this issue.  For my part I would forgive them for misleading us if they would just help out here...

I installed the mod and it`s great. But since i installed it, it's not possible to get ressources. You see a Oil field on the map but it you plant a oil refenery on it, it says that there isn`t any oil.

Do you have a solution for this?

@zeroz_92 if you read carefully, and watch the videos presented in the description, youll see that some things are displaced whene you use proyect orion, resourses are one of them, so actually you need to move your resourse digging to the place it was shifted. watch the video, youll get a better idea of what im talking about.

So, are the things like value only visually changed, or does value also actually have  an impact on the wrong place? I mean, if a park has a postive effect on the city, but it is visually on the wrong place, will it effect that wrong place, or just like normal the land around it?

@darkshadenl, yes, the actual place of the beneffit is displaced, i do think the video dows show how a park is seen in certain place but the land value increases in the displaced area. this is an issue i do belive the modders are adresing, for what i can read and hear, hope they do it fast because increasing city scale is clearly a great addition to this game. having to think in displacement kinda takes out part of the fun of the game and makes it a bit more complicated to plan.

Forgive my ignorance, but with the 4:1 condition, does this mean there are 4 times the resources available? i.e.; looking at image#4 in the mod description, the ore map seems to serve a much larger surface area when scaled to fit the 3K boundary. Or perhaps I'm just crazy? :D

Somehow I understand his ranting, out of frustration... When I first tried Orion I was convinced that the offset was mearly visual. My first experience with 3K was on a existing city - population drops, highwealth buildings developing where only medium parks were built, poluttion once restricted to a controled zone deviating into residential zones (and making people sick). So it was clear that the "visual offset" was more than that.

After that I uninstalled Orion because what I saw was a complete game breaker... I mean, it is impossible to plan if your land value and poluttion data just randomly deviates. Still I kept reading along many many post that the offset was only visual and no consequent effect from that would be observed... I considered maybe I should try it on a new region - so I did, yesterday. City is still to small do prove who´s right :P

Anyway, of course respect and consideration are to be given to modders, and I´m sure Blackkat knows that :)

We are just to anxious to have the best experience out of 3K.

My feedback regarding Orion+Akar+Avalon - Orion seems to have a huge impact on my PC performance (wich is a capable machine: Intel 4770k; 16GB ram, crossfire 7970 ghz+R9280X, running@5760*1080). When I first tried Orion I didn´t have this issue, but yesterday my graphics ocasionally stuttered and fans were all hyped out :P removed akar+avalon but stutter is still there :S

I´m pretty sure it´s due to Orion. Still I want to try and replicate my first experience with 3K, without AKAR+Avalon, but with BoC and AllRCI plop. I´ll remove the scriptfiles in the userdata/packages folder as well considering this folder was empty before...

Nothing like a good "laborotry" observation. I removed Orion as well, installed BoC again just to run my old cities to see if the stutters persisted... and they did not. Installed Orion+AKAR+Avalon back and chose another region Viridian Woods (wich I had played in before) - 16 cities; 4 GW´s. The same size has the previous region were I had those drops, but this time the game is running like butter and PC is quiet.

So, Orion+Akar+Avalon had nothing to do with performance drop... :)
