About This File

Sorry if the frequent updates annoy you people. Now I actually have some time to work on this project again :D

The SimCity 4 Buddy application aims to make life a little easier for SimCity 4 players out there.

NOTE THAT THIS IS A BETA RELEASE
Do NOT expect a fully functional tool with zero bugs. I have tried to break the program in every way I could imagine to see if it broke, but I may have overlooked something.

* * *

Now that that is out of the way, what does this program do?

Features
It has multiple purposes. This early version has the following features:

  • Manage your user folders through a friendly user interface without having to mess around with folders and files manually.
  • Let SimCity 4 Buddy install the plugins for you (dat, rar or zip files. Multi-volume rar archives (zzz.part1.rar, zzz.part2.rar)
  • Launch the game with a specific user folder (i.e. a Paris region, SimMars, MTP, Futuristic etc.)
  • Handle launcher command line switches through a user interface (stuff like no intro, no audio, 1 cpu, resolution, window mode etc.)
  • Let SimCity 4 Buddy save your game at regular intervals
  • Let SimCity 4 Buddy identify your plugins against the central database so you can easily manage your plugins onwards - Don't worry if all of your plugins aren't identified. The database is being constantly updated.
  • Let SimCity 4 Buddy check if you are missing any dependencies (for plugins known to the central database)

Check out the support thread below to see what features are to be implemented in the future (the dependencies stuff is quite nifty if I may say so myself)

When I launched version 0.0.0.9, it asked me to update to latest available update. I clicked on Skip.

Now I want to update to latest version, it doesn't ask me to update !! Even after I restart the program! When will it ask next time?

Can we have a manual update button in Help -> About section?

And the 'Bugs and feedback' under Help menu leads to a 404 page (page not found).

And I can run multiple instances of Buddy program.

When you hit "Skip" it will ask you again in one week if you want to update. I am not able to change the interval that as it is built into the tool I use to release the program. I am however looking into other options, but I have not found anything that is as easy to use as this tool. I will check if I can make the updates mandatory so you cannot start an outdated version, I'll get back to you on that one.

The fastest way is to force an update is to uninstall and reinstall the program. I cannot make an update button in the program for now sadly.

The bugs and suggestions menu bug sounds wierd. At the moment it should redirect to this thread. I'll check that as well.

You can run multiple instances of the buddy program, but I would not recommend it as they might override each others changes. I'm looking into "locking" it so you can only start one instance.

Dear Koala, (term of endearment...)

Awesome! Really! Everyone has been struggling with dependencies and plugin structure since time immemorial!

Finally -- maybe -- hopefully -- something as helpful as the DAMN and DAMN NAM...

I'll certainly have a go at it from a clean directory. (Must find time to interrupt my playing though... and find a back-up partition -- ok found it...)

     Unquote.

Most people like to choose whether or not to update and not to be forced to don't you agree.

(Just my two cents you know.)

I'll get back to you in a few (alpha- uhm, sorry beta-testing days.

Anyway, I'm an optimist -- I deal with constructive pessimism.

Keep up the great work compadre. And thanks a million gazebo's, simoleons or whatever your heart's desire.

Thank you for your kind words :)

I have also considered this many times. The main thing my mind comes back to is that this application is linked to a central server (you can unlink it, but you won't get the full benefits).

This server contains personal info about the plugin creators (authors) that have signed up. In order to provide the best kind of protection I can manage I need to make sure that both my server software and the client are as secure as possible. Also I want to make sure that whatever is in contact with the server has the most recent version with the most recent changes, so you don't allow a client with a known vulnerability to connect to the server.

I have however changed the installer so I and you have more control of where and how the program is installed. This does not include an auto-update feature, so it will be possible to avoid updating the software if you prefer not to, but you will then not be able to connect to the server if you so desire.

That is the best compromise I can come up with :)

Btw. The coding of the beta is complete. I'm recreating the administration panel where I and authors can upload and update plugin information and should have that ready by the end of the month.

Do we have any update on this project? I am waiting for the next version.

Hey,

I'm a bit caught up in real life issues at the moment so development is a bit slow. I however still work on it a few hours every day but it is not in a state where I can release a new version, as I'm optimising the core of the program and that caused a lot of the basic functions to stop working (properly). I have found and fixed most of the bugs now, but there are still some bugs (like the launcher settings that are totally broken for some reason) left. I will try to update the forum post more often, but when you don't really have anything to tell besides "I'm working on it" then you don't feel like updating :)

What features do you plan on adding?

As of now I'm working on getting the dependency check up and running. Which I'm making good progress on. Next step is streamlining the app a bit more. My next idea was to be able to install and manage regions as well and - if I can figure out how - make a userfriendly config.bmp editor. But I'm open to suggestions :)

The dependency check is now back online :) I still need to add tonnes of plugins to the database so don't be alarmed if it doesn't find all dependencies at first.

Hey Asser, thank you very much for keeping this tool alive! If it manages to solve dependencies for at least 80% plugins in existence, that's hell of a tool in my book.

The download link for this file is for an external location that's not on Simptropolis and that link is now 404 and extinct...
