About This File

This huge building covers 2 city blocks in the City of Chicago, and has an 8-lane section of the Congress Street Expressway running through it.

Suffice it to say that this is one of the most unique buildings in Chicago.  It was built in the Great Depression of the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration (WPA), who wanted to give jobs to unemployed Chicagoans.  With many men on the job, they built a huge (3 million sq. ft.) building.

In the 1990s, the US Post Office decided that the old building was not efficient enough to process the volume of mail that comes into Chicago, so they built a new facility 1 block south, and in1996, the doors on this magnificent Art Deco building were closed permanently.  For 10 years, it has remained empty, its huge size actually discouraging possible tenants.

This building could not easily be made into a growable, because of its huge size.  Therefore, I have made it into a ploppable only.

I love seeing buildings from Chicago and I think it woul be cool if you did an avenue version. 10/10!

Awesome job, easily a 10. I'd be interested in an avenue version as well; that way I could use either one, depending on the circumstance.

Great! I've been waiting for this one for a while. Equinox:I would also be interested in an avenue version. Even though I'm from Chicago and know there's a highway running underneath it, I'd be able to get more use out of this building with a TE avenue.

WOW!!!! Too bad about the real-life history of the building, it certainly seems to have a legacy. Would be nice to get it filled again. Great work!

BTW: Tracker, NDEX decided not to use installers because we think it is simpler, easier, ect without them, if you want a full run-down search in the NDEX forums, I believe there is an old thread in their explaining it.

Simply Awsome! Though abandoned there are still news cameras on the building for traffic reports. Since you can run avenues into ground highways I don't think its a big deal. Thanks for making another Chicago'n happy!

That's just perfect - how did you get the highway going through it? It looks very proffesional and nice. Maybe some slightly larger pictures next time, though...Still a 10/10

I can't make the pictures bigger. They are limited in size. Or do you mean a wider shot, showing more of the building? It's huge, I can't show the whole thing and all the detail. Take your pick.

I THINK A FILE MIGHT BE MISSING: i tried to explode and move this to another location and the building would not be bulldozed. I am glad i didnt save the city. Before i rate, maybe someone can tell me if it is just my problem or if there is something missing

Huh, I thought this was going to be a PDA release, but seing how PDA is more or less dead and buried, I can see why you would want to make this NDEX. Anyways, looks amazing!

Yeah, sorry Tim. I can't very easily run a team alone that's supposed to be made up of me and two other guys who are both very busy in college in their respective fields.

Saaaaa-WEEEET! I love buildings that extend all the way to the sidewalk, giving our CBDs a much better urban feel (still waiting for single-tile 4 lane roads though). The underpass is definitely the cherry on top here! 10/10 for appearance, and I'll rate after I use it (and I WILL use it!)
