The whole environmental bent worries me
AddisonWesley replied to LivingInThePast's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Environmentalism and sustainability are two major philosophies that inform contemporary planning- if you've ever been enrolled in a town planning programme you should know this. Resource management, whether it be of oil and gas for electricity, or just land itself, present serious constraints for all *modern* metropoleis. This is fact and reality. That being said, I very much doubt the new SimCity will have any more of an environmental 'bent' than the previous iteration of this game. It would be great if a real world timeline (along with associated limitations in technology) were included in the game as this would better reflect the growth patterns of cities from the past to present. -
Hey, those details of the gardiner look great. I'm wondering, will you be putting in the Lunatic Asylum?
-
Awesome Update. Congratulations on Dundas. I'm curious as to how you're going to be putting in the below grade sections of the Yonge line. Keep up the good work.
-
Yes! An update! Methinks the Don will prove most challenging, especially with the King Edward viaduct.
-
How long did it take you to do the city proper? This is the best version I've seen so far. Don't rush it just for the sake of posting it here though, it's really good work.
-
Oh, I was referring to the real life dundas, it really is a messed up street.
-
I cannot wait to see more! Dundas street is pretty messed up, wouldn't you agree? Keep up the great work.
-
Wow, an accurate Toronto region - I hope you can pull this off. Everything looks good so far. How'd you get from Etobicoke to Yorkdale!?
-
So, how do you feel about Toronto?
AddisonWesley replied to dslr.cow's topic in Architecture & Urban Planning
Here are a few quick facts about Toronto (the city places 3rd in a lot of things): Canada's financial and corporate centre, a.k.a. headquarter city. Canada's, if not North America's and the world's most multicultural city (as listed by the UN). More than 100 languages are spoken in the city. Also home to Canada's largest Chinese population. The Caribana parade is the biggest single-day happening and largest Caribbean festival in North America. The world's largest undeground shopping and pedestrian complex (PATH). he annual Toronto International Film Festival is second only to Cannes in terms of high-profile films, stars and market activity. Second highest transit ridership in North America, after New York. Third largest theatre centre in the world after New York and London. Third largest stock exchange in North America, in terms of value traded. Fifth largest city in North America, after New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Mexico city. Toronto's suburb of Mississauga held an international design competition for a new 52 storey condominium, which will be the city's 'signature' tower. Here are the finalists: -
Hey, Profecy: Just so you know, the Ritz will be going up south of RTH, across the street. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.
-
Judging by the style of building, I think that The Pearl Building would work better. Just an idea though, awesome work.

http://img214.echo.cx/img214/9130/crest8oq.jpg align=baseline> Preface, the Digbyesque journal: As you read through this city journal, you may notice some similarities between Kenton and Digby by lewellan. I must admit, the very flow and design of this city journal was inspired directly by Digby. One thing for example, is the time period; Kenton and Digby both start in the 1950s because as lewellan explained, it is only possible to go so far back with the limitations set in SimCity 4. I had previously written a much longer preface but lost it in the reshuffling process. Yes, you will see pictures and other story elements being moved around before I have set everything up to my liking and what I believe may make this city journal more readable. If you haven't seen Digby, I strongly suggest you check out! It is truly a masterpiece and will most likely inspire you as it has I. Kenton: Introduction and overview Welcome to Kenton, a fairly old region with little expansion or development outside of its main cities and towns. The regional population topped 150,000 just this year (1950 census), and with the opening of a new seaway in just a few years, the growth in Kenton is bound to pick up. Here's a little look at the current state of Kenton's settled and developed areas: http://img236.echo.cx/img236/6667/regionalmap19501ni.jpg align=baseline> Dominating the area is Lydford, the beneficiary of hundreds of thousands of dollars in government grants as a major port in the soon to be seaway. Although not recieving nearly as much as Lydford is, the other coastal communities of Kenton are feeding off the city's new found success and the major factor in the development of the coastal regions is Lydford's willingness to share. The farms that used to be stretched along the coast have since been replaced by manufacturing plants and other factories which have helped diversify Kenton's economy. Good thing for prospective farmers, Kenton still offers vast amounts of lands along the river banks and coasts of Lansdowne Island. http://img217.echo.cx/img217/1086/regionalrailmap8ns.jpg width=800 align=baseline border=1> Kenton's railway system was started in 1887 to transport people and more importantly goods, to the towns and villages of Kenton. At the time, it consisted of one branch line running off of the trans-continental line from the north, following the coast to Port Arthur. In the past 70 or so years, more than ten new railways have been layed and the National Rail Service Co. now runs an extra line to the western region of Geraldton. The National Rail Service Co. line is mainly used for cross country/continental travel, while the smaller lines are used travel between counties and towns/cities. All the companies share the tracks, but the ones that are owned privately (such as the listed ones, with the exception of NRS Co.'s) charge other companies for usage. The two main goods transport lines are the Dorchester Railway Company and Barrister & Bishop. Others are used mainly for the transport of people.

Lydford: The New King George Hotel This Splendid Commodious Hotel is finished and furnished with every regard to comfort and luxury; has hot and cold water, with Baths and Closets on each floor, the Bed-rooms are large and well ventilated, and arranged for private parties and families. The aim has been to make this the most unexceptionable first class Hotel in all of Kenton. - the Edwards Inn and Resort In the roaring twenties, the Edwards Inn and Resort was the destination for the who's who of Kenton society. Grand parties and lavish social occasions were the trademark of the inn. In 1929, as frequent guests slid into bankrupcty and sold off their valuables, the Edwards Inn and Resort went down with them. Now, in an attempt to bring back a first class hotel to the region, the former getaway of the city's rich has been reincarnated in all its glory (and then some) as the Royal King George Hotel. Across the Lydford strait, the grand hotel sits perched on a gently sloping hill, offering spectacular views of the city. A frequent ferry service transports tourists and city dwellers alike to this still untouched haven from the hustle and bustle of city life. Features full tennis courts and a swimming bath. http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/5759/royal1so.jpg align=baseline> http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/2259/royalkinggeorgeinset5tv.jpg align=baseline> http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/8562/royalkinggeorgepsd0mf.jpg align=baseline border=1>

Frampton: Minor Update A new proposal by the community of Frampton's town assembly (1950) raised concerns over a lack of one place where the community could get together and worship. The proposal was for a new church, the Farmer Memorial Church on concessional road number 2. Since then, both construction and development of the area have occured; many farms replaced by single family dwellings and small businesses. Admittedly, since over the following 4 years, the town's population has swelled to 3777 from a mere 1400. http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/9400/newfarmermemorialchurchproposa.jpg align=baseline border=1> Below, quickly concessional road number 2 has become a main street for Frampton, with new development popping up here and there. A renovated train station which provides access from two streets is also adding to the importance of concessional road number 2. http://img433.imageshack.us/img433/9819/newfarmermemorialchurch4rj.jpg align=baseline border=1>

Wow, that was a much longer than expected hiatus. I had planned to take time off for exams and play like mad during the summer, but I thought I had lost the town and city maps for Kenton. Only recently did I perform a search of my Simcity 4 files to find them. Hopefully I can still make something of this city journal. I shall continue from where I left off Lydford: Much delayed Minor Update Crews continue work on Lydford's new subway, images and articles captured from construction are new recent features in Kenton's regional newspaper, which is counting the days from the first pile driving until opening day. http://img474.imageshack.us/img474/6420/constructionwell7pz.jpg width=433 align=baseline border=0> Below: Some more recent views of Lydford; the Dominion Institute at the north end of Avenue Rd. Once the most prestigious post secondary institution in the region, it has recently been made second by the Lydford Centennial University. http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/1435/dominioninstitution5bq.jpg align=baseline border=1> Below: Lydford's main park, Colborne Park sits between city hall and St. James' Cathedral on James street. Also visible is the mayor's historic residence, to the left of city hall, and the new residence of the mayor, at the right of city hall. http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/2491/colbornepark7pd.jpg align=baseline border=1> Below: Moss Park, a low income area close the geographical heart of Lydford where many immigrants have settled in the years following the war. http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/4971/mosspark5uw.jpg align=baseline border=1> Below: Lydford Central Station, downtown's gateway to the rest of Kenton caught on a smoggy day. The station lies on the National Rail Service line, running through the city. http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/3701/lydfordcentralstation0zd.jpg align=baseline border=1> Below: Parkdale Heights, a trendy up and coming area for well off students and small families. Weekly rents here run as high as $68.86 - but that's only if you need two bathrooms. http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/6875/parkdaleheights5gc.jpg align=baseline border=1>

Anyone remember the good old CJs ?
AddisonWesley replied to your_adress_here's topic in SC4 City Journals
Yeah, I remember Digby, that was my favourite CJ. They all seemed to just die off though, how would one 'properly' end a CJ anyway? -
WOW. A lot of pictures. I like the colours in your city. BTW, what is nex holm?
