Whats the worst thing that could happen?
Flat Raver replied to silverlightning81's topic in Forum Games
The show is abruptly replaced by a signal claiming the show's been cancelled because the program planners found out reality shows about low brow people drew more ratings. WTWTTCH while doing your exam? -

Is the new SimCity game a downgrade from SimCity 4?
Flat Raver commented on Kythlyn's article in News
From vanilla SC4? Not necessarily. It's just that EA doesn't know how to make money. Profits are the reward, not the reason, for selling products. The reason for running busniess is to supply society with products and services that satisfy demands. If Simcity 2013 fails, it's because EA have no idea how to market a city building game. Too much FarmVille, not enough Minecraft. -
A Different Perspective...
Flat Raver replied to soldyne's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I'm not going to get the game as it seems, due to ideological differences between me and the developers+publishers behind it. EA and Maxis, especially EA, see multiplayer as the default state. That a game is supposed to be played with others, no time for introvert activities. You know what else is an introvert activity? Masturbation. And didn't you know; masturbation causes both cancer and the inability to become a respectable and productive citizen. SO keep your hands over your sheets, spend more time with friends and family (rather than arts, philosophy and entertainment) and may God bless America. -
Jaques Rogge, president of IOC, motivates the professionalism with that it allows poorer countries to participate in the olympics. Only in the developed world, can sports be seen as a hobby rather than profession. There was a Native American gold medalist in 1912 who later got disqualified when a French journalist found out he had been paid to participate in ONE baseball game (to make a quick buck in his otherwise rather poor living conditions).

I really like this project of yours, but I'm getting the sense that libertarians may find your philosophies a bit, dissonant... They like to reason that poor people deserve their economic position, and that "rich slugs" worked hard for their earnings. Though it can be argued that success may be determined by luck rather than effort. In short, I'd love to see the look on Ayn Rand's face if she ever discovered this little project of yours.

If this thread is on the wrong forum, please move it. A while ago, I downloaded a whole bunch of plugins from Sim-Board, including a great measure of spaceships and spaceport props you can place on a field to make a spaceport. That seems promising, I couldn't wait to make a port like this: The only problem is that I'm not able to find the blank lots, i.e. the fitting asphalt/concrete tiles. I'm also not sure in what end I'll have to begin in. Is there anyone out there who could tell me how the hell I build on of these things? I hope my questions made sense.

1 hour of gaming and archived 11 million population city
Flat Raver replied to tomas1990's topic in SC4 Showcase
I find this kind of comparing to be redendant and irrelevant when it comes to SC4. Besides, if you want to express the monotony of a super dense city, Imperar already did this perfectly in SC3K. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NTJQTc-TqpU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> -

How do I use these Japanese spaceports?

Okay, basic custom airport textures and elements. Okay, thanks for the advice! Also, why haven't I seen that spaceport thread yet? It's awesome! -
Right now, it might have to be The Stanley Parable.

Differences from SimCity 4 and the new one...Please explain
Flat Raver replied to Shazadkashmir's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
Why did you use those kinds of words? As if game graphics/aesthetics are only good when they are realistic. We've went through this once, already. While we're on the topic, try comparing vanilla SC4 with the SC4 you find on the city journals on this site.- 18 Replies

Maxis: SimCity’s “lonely experience” influenced always-online play
Flat Raver commented on Hellken's article in News
If games truly are art, and they are, just a very special kind of art, then this reboot's subtext worries me. The reboot is designed so that your city won't survive, let alone thrive, unless you interact with other real players. This sends out the message that the state of solitude is an inherently bad thing. That socializing with others is essential for your survival and success. Thus, I unfortunately have to oppose Maxis on an ideological level. The DRM and always online requriement I can tolerate. I can also accept that you're making minature cities rather than full-scale cities. But now that understand the artistic intentions behind it, I will not support it. If you want to support the solitudal canvas games, go play Minecraft instead. -
Maxis: SimCity’s “lonely experience” influenced always-online play
Flat Raver commented on Hellken's article in News
The problem is that Maxis tries (or were told by EA) to emulate the success of FarmVille and WoW, rather than the success of Minecraft. The SC4 we play and love today is very different from the one that was released ten years ago. The game has become an unexpected canvas for the modding community, thanks to all the mousehole the devs didn't pay musch attention to. In other words, the people making the SimCity reboot, are the same people who brought us vanilla SC4. :shrudder: In addition, one thing we have to keep in mind is that most people still see gaming as an anti-social activity, and can only accept multiplayer because it allows for social interaction. These are the kind of people EA and Maxis have been listening to. The problem is that we "shut-ins", in our case, have been using our left brains for creating modifications and CJs and whatnot, rather than what others expect us to, interacting with real people during gameplay. You knwo what? Demand Maxis to make SimCity 4 open source at the launch of the reboot. There are too many restrictions in 4 which allows for good and accessible modds (I'm looking at you, incomprehensible RHW, NWM and other pussle piece plugins). Also, the UI sucks. -

EA boss proudly refuses to publish single-player games
Flat Raver commented on Decius's article in News
The problem is not EA, it's all those millions of people buying Madden and FIFA, no matter what we think of EA's bussniess practises. The sad fact is that the world cares more about football than about niched and/or experimental titles. -

Simcity Reboot doomed by the fans?
Flat Raver replied to Zombeast's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
remember that the reviews are bought in by EA/Maxis. Gamespy/PCgamer/IGN ect. are paid by EA to give them good ratings. Juss saying Actually, that's not true. Fact is, that it's generally the fans of a certain franchise who push reviewers to give good ratings. The fanbase of say, Halo, Legend of Zelda or Uncharted, would send angry letter or in some really sad cases, death threats, to critics who dare to criticize the long awaited sequel. So IGN and Gamespy aren't bribed, but rather scared. There are, of course, exceptions. This is one of those cases, where the fanbase is having the opposite expectations to what's usually seen in the gaming community. -
Discussion about City Tile Size
Flat Raver replied to alex macnamara's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
That's exactly what I thought they would do a little while ago... trying to find the post... Eh, stuff it. I remember one of the points of making region play was for large, organic growth of contiguous cities? This kind of spits in the face of that. In truth, I've always had the impression that Maxis never thought of regions that way even for SimCity 4. Individual-yet-separate cities connected in a region always seemed the developer and simulation mindset, while contiguous cities evolved as a player-initiated workaround to use the established region framework to better represent their sprawling hometowns. Players are largely still thinking of better integrating their contiguous region tiles to function as one large city, while the developers are clearly still working from the premise that individual city tiles are complete mini-scaled cities within themselves. We are at different ends of the region scale spectrum. Similarly, while many players think of extending the hand-crafted model aspect of their city building into the regions, in the same way someone making a model railroad diorama might model a mountainous hinterland, the developer's aim seem to focus more on the regions being multiplayer gaming fields with leader scoreboards rather than expansive modelling spaces. Short of elaborate tile workarounds, the new article has pretty much eliminated the idea of contiguous region play, which is a pity as I am fond of the multiplayer idea of one player starting a grand ceremonial boulevard at one end, connecting it to their contiguous neighbor, and having that neighboring player somehow meaningfully complete the landmark design at their end. Somewhat expectedly, given the online world aspect, the article also does not bode well for region custom mapmaking. If this is so, then it is for me too great a sacrifice. This is what I've been thinking ever since I started playing SC4. Notice how in the fourth instalment, you type in your name in each individual city? That gives me the impression that SC4 was supposed to be played on a shared computer, with each person sharing it, simulating their own city. So I guess that right from the start, Maxis had multi-player in mind when designing the regional play.- 1,284 Replies
