Almaty Facts Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan, a large, though lightly-populated, former Soviet Republic (Kazakh SSR), and is home to more than 1.1 million people. The name comes from a Russian word meaning Father of Apples, as Almaty lies in the center of a massive apple-growing region.
