You're suffering from your own talent; this one is unexceptional compared to some of your others, but it is still quite good.

What can I say without giving it away? Keep trying; this city is in a mainland, non-lanlocked country.
  8. Mystery City: Europe

Let's here how y'all did from the non-gymnastics Olympic judges. Ouch, 3.2... Obviously, some more work needs to be put into the country-guessing... Keep trying...the correct country has yet to be guessed.

  11. Mystery City: Europe

Ah, no correct country guesses. I suppose I should tell you that this city is in a country that is not a former Warsaw Pact nation.

Congratulations, mies. Mystery City #5 is Almaty, Kazakhstan. Almaty Facts Almaty is the former capital of Kazakhstan, a large, though lightly-populated, former Soviet Republic (Kazakh SSR), and is home to more than 1.1 million people. The name comes from a Russian word meaning Father of Apples, as Almaty lies in the center of a massive apple-growing region. Almaty began life as the Russian fort Zailiysky in 1854, renamed Verna in 1855. In 1921 the town became known as Alma-Ata and Almaty in 1929 when the city became capital of Kazakh SSR. In 1991 the city became the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the charter instituting the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States, an ambiguous post-Soviet commonwealth much like the British version) was signed in the city. In 1997, the capital was moved to Astana, in northern Kazakhstan; however, Almaty remains the commercial and cultural capital of the nation. Scoring mies +10 Now we're off to... Congratulations, mies. Mystery City #8 is Luxembourg, Luxembourg. We here at MCE love facts, so let's spew a few! Luxembourg Facts Luxembourg is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a small state wedged between France, Germany, and Belgium. Because of its unfortunate position, the city's history is dominated by foreign conquests and occupations; Luxembourg as an independent nation did not emerge until the 1800s and did not become more than a pushover for Germany until after World War II with its inception in the EEC. Luxembourg City is home to around 83,000 people and is a center of finance and government. Luxembourg grew up around Luxembourg Castle, which became the center of the state. Today, Luxembourg is the home of Radio Luxembourg, the city's university, and several EU governmental centers, including the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank. Congratulations, mies. Right country, right city; Mystery City #4 is Manila, Philippines. Manila Facts Manila, or Maynila, as it is called in Filipino, is the capital of the Philippines. Over 1.5 million people live in the actual city; more than 12.8 million in the metro area. Manila lies on the eastern shore of Manila Bay at the mouth of the Pasig River on the Philippines' main island, Luzon. Manila has the reputation of being one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. The actual city of Manila is the country's second-largest city; Quezon City, a suburb to the northeast, is larger. Manila is sometimes called The Pearl of the Orient. Despite extremely impoverished areas in the city, it is considered a world-class city. Scoring mies +10 Now we're off to... Congratulations, simwario. Mystery City #7 is Novi Sad, Serbia (Yugoslavia). Here's some facts! Novi Sad Facts Novi Sad is a city in northeastern Serbia (Yugoslavia), about 25 kilometers east of the border with Croatia. The city lies on the Danube River and is the capital of the province of Vojvodina. The city was devastated by NATO bombing in 1999; all three of its major bridges over the Danube were destroyed, the city's oil refineries ruined, and neighborhoods cluster-bombed. Some 300,000 people live in Novi Sad. Scoring simwario <> +10 Now let's go visit...
