Here's a new map I made I'm gonna start building on:
  2. Show us your Region!

Thanks for the info on that tool, that will save me much time. Also your map looks great too! a note in imgur, if you use jpeg instead of png it will let you post the full size, that's what i had to do cuz the png is too big a file
  3. Show us your Region!

^damn now thats what i'm talkin about.... I'm starting one now thats 32x32 large maps for a total of 1024 large cities. I don't have the whole thing stitched together yet in photoshop, but I have part of it I'll show you here so you can see the scale of this thing: If you look in the top left, those square gridlike formations, each one of those is a large city Satellite View, and Transit View:
  4. Show us your Region!

  5. Better Region View?

Is there any way to zoom in for more detail on the region view? I know the capability does not exist, but an addon or pluggin? It just seems like the camera viewing the region is too far away, I know it's probably hard coded into the game, but has anybody got anywhere with this? Thanks for any ideas
  6. Nortropolis

Hey yall I'm startin this new city. I'll add more dialogue as I go. Here's the beginning, just getting started with some zones: Starting to develop: Zoomed out pic: Some medium density residential growing in... apartment buildings on the avenue, higher density, more traffic, more inner city downtown feeling: More neighborhoods:

Is there a different section or site to post city journals? something more populated? i havent updated this in 2 months and its still on the front page, seems like this forums dead im close to 200k now in 2 large city tiles i have updates but its kinda time consuming to post them and if theres no viewers it doesn't seem worth the effort
  8. Nortropolis

wow thanks for all the comments, im glad people are watching! here's some more: without the markup:

I played a lot since the last update. Had some problems with some plugins and buildings not showing up so I had to clean up that mess. I had to reinstall NAM and it's stirred up come confusion in the city with the demand etc.... Basically I'm at 37,000 sims and all the demand is negative. Not a big deal I will find a way to work with it. This is what I like. I enjoy playing this game most when I'm trying to fix my cities and figure out what the hell is wrong with it, then finding a way to fix it with the money I've got. Like I know some people use the $$$ cheats and use SC4 as a sandbox... I like fighting against the simulation if that makes sense. My cashflow is positive though. I'm making more than I spend, so money isn't an issue. The plan is to start another tile of the region and build that up, then connect the two.... That's how I plan to beat the negative demand problem. Some Pix:
  13. Nortropolis

Okay i've got a lot of free time now so things are really gonna get movin~! Heres 2 pix of the downtown area. Ive got a avenue tunnel going under ground to maximize space on top, the rotary for all the traffic situations. Now I've expanded the avenues because I'm adding in higher density residental and commercial zones. When the people start moving in and the buildings start rising ill add an update So here's the pix:
  14. Can't find it?... Ask here!

I look on the STEX, and it's filled with beautiful, 1000000 dollar mansions. REAL CITIES have BLIGHT in the inner city. I have found a few boarded up buildings, but wish there was more in this direction. * * * I'd like GROWABLE boarded up buildings, and GROWABLE burnt-out buildings. It would be even better if SimCity would board up abandoned buildings, instead of just putting a "no job" icon over them. but that apparently isn't possible. Boarded up and Burnt out buildings. I run a Region of poverty, and the buildings look way too nice. I want some run-down, burnt-out boarded-up abandoned buildings to line the streets of the worst areas of my city.
  15. I didn't know whether to put this here or in the mod forum. When a building abandons, instead of the dark overlay that maxis uses, is there any way to have the building replaced with a BAT? If I created some BAT's of burned out abandoned buildings, could these be made to appear in place of the original building? I'm gonna make some stuff like this: I could just make them regular BAT's that appear in low wealth areas, but it would be more realistic if they popped up on abandoned lots. Thanks

I've got diagonal avenues with low wealth low density commercial shops and stuff facing them. The problem is the half tile of grass between the buildings and the street: You see what I mean? Only the corners of the lots touch the street, and there's a triangle of grass. Are there any addons that will change the texture of that triangle into something resembling pavement? It would blend a lot better. I know they have ploppable tile textures to use on diagonal avenues that DONT have buildings in adjacent squares. But I'm looking for something that could by default change that triangle to pavement on any diagonal avenue with an adjacent lot. Anybody figure this one out yet? Thanks
  18. Is SimCity 4 Really a Game?

The thing about SimCity, is that once you understand a few basic things about the game engine, the challenge against the game is gone. What I mean by that, is that I'll start a new city/region, and map out some basic zones, streets, power plant, and within 2-3 minutes after pressing "cheetah", when people start moving into the homes, my income will be higher than my expenses, and it will stay like that indefinitely. I remember playing SimCity2k back in like '96 when I was in 5th-6th grade, and for a while, it WAS a struggle. I remember some of the funnest SC2K games were when I was working with a struggling city where my income was just slightly higher than my expenses, and my power plant was about to blow up, and just barely making it through. I felt like I was actually struggling to maintain a medium sized city, and figure out how to micromanage my funds to maintain my city's current state, while adding things to it that could help increase my income so my city could grow - kind of like a Mayor managing a real city. Now I know most of that had to do with me being young and not quite understanding the game engine. Now, I could probably reinstall SC2k and never face a challenge, just like SC4. For that reason, I don't look at SC4 as a "game" as much as other games. It's more like a canvas is to a painter. The difficulty is almost entirely inside my own head, deciding how I want my city to look etc... I could build some boring layout city and cover an entire region with massive population, but I don't do that because it doesn't satisfy me - even though the game lets me do it. For me, the challenge is entirely inside my head, developing realistic and creative cities that fit MY standards. The point is, I'm not fighting against the game. The game is easy-mode and totally boring if I merely play within the rules of the game. But the fun and challenge (and addiction) comes from designing cities that satisfy your own standards and not just doing what's necessary to satisfy the game engine. SimCity is an open canvas for you to express yourself on. The real challenges are entirely inside your own head as you decide how to build something that will satisfy YOU, not the game engine.
  19. Buildings are lookin good. I like the progress pics cuz they show how to approach re-creating a building. I need to learn how to do this stuff because so much of the stuff I want in my cities isn't on STEX. Keeping with the NYC theme, I want buildings that look like the ones you're making, except burned-out versions like south bronx 70's-80's http://www.southbx.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/south_bronx_1975_mel_rosenthal_small.jpg http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_mg7D3kYysfw/Rrl4foMAEtI/AAAAAAAADCk/DciRfv6wC98/s1600-h/Slum_South_Bronx_3_small.jpg or some buildings like these for the rundown suburb areas:
  20. I have a major city, with a functioning landfill. What if I build a small neighborhood with no street connection to the main part of the city, where commuters get to the main part of the city by subway. I know in real life the Garbage Truck needs road access to the neighborhood to clean it, but is it the same in SC4? Purely a game mechanics question. I'm just trying to figure out ways to have certain neighborhoods not get their trash collected. That way I can downsize the landfill by declaring the poorest neighborhoods "uncovered areas", because the extra tax revenue from keeping the poor neighborhoods clean isn't enough to justify the costs of extra landfill. Thanks.
  21. Trash Collected Without Road Access?

Yeah the rubbish trucks don't need streets to collect the trash.... Oh well. If anybody knows any mods or anything to control where the trash gets collected, please let me know!
  22. Trash Collected Without Road Access?

So the presence of a functioning landfill cleans everywhere regardless of transportation. I'm gonna run some tests to be sure. The real reason I want to cut-off certain neighborhoods from trash pickup isn't really cause I'm a greedy mayor, but I want to get a more realistic effect in the rundown poverty-stricken neighborhoods. The rundown neighborhoods with abandoned/burnedout buildings and rubble piles would look even more authentic with trash piling up on the streets. And the presence of trash on the streets would further decrease the desirability, like in real life. At the same time, I obviously don't want trash accumulating in the wealthy areas. I'll post results if I get them, but if anybody has tried this, I'm interested to hear your experience. Thanks.

well, after losing interest in my first cj, im back with another, this time theres a change of scenery... i downloaded this map, montreal, off the map exchange, since it caught my eye, and wasnt TOO big... my last cj was on a massive region map, and my computer couldnt handle the workload... dont be fooled by the name though, i have no intentions of replicating the actual city of montreal, im just using the terrain... im using a mod which lowers the low-density residential houses to 3-5 people each, in an attempt to keep the populations more realistic in the low density zones... the idea of this CJ is to show the progression of the city, starting out in its infancy, eventually becoming a booming metropolis (i hope)... ive got quite a few bats/lots off the STEX to liven things up a bit, and im also using pegs seasonal trees to add some variation in color as the seasons change... im gonna throw up a few pics of the city as it stands now, which is in its VERY early stage... i have a lot of free time over the next couple of weeks, so this should be growing rather quickly, so check back often for more updates... lets start off with a pic that shows the current development in its entirety: pretty simple so far... i overzoned the commercial area, so thats why there are alot of undeveloped commercial zones... they will fill up as my residential population grows.... with that said, heres a shot of the commercial zone so far... i even threw in some pavement on the sloped sides, just to give it a more urban feel... now we're gonna take a look at one of the neighborhoods from a semi-zoomed out level, just to give you an idea of the way i tend to build my neighborhoods... if we zoom in a little closer, you can get a better look at some of the housing styles the sims have chosen to build... with the majority of my sims uneducated and poor, their main source of income is from the dirty industrial jobs they work at, which are located just over the river, to the west... cover ur noses with ur driving thru here last but not least, we'll take a look at the 6 windmills which keep the city running... thats all for now... the population is 1672 feedback is welcome, just do me a favor and try to keep the negativity out of this thread... if you have something bad to say, PM me, but lets try to keep this thread positive... be back with more later

Hey, I lost interest for a few weeks, but I did a little more work on it, and will probably do some more updates... heres a pic of all ive done so far, ill do closeups and more building tomorrow... the pic is 1280*1024 so im just going to post the link, since i dont want to get it removed...
