hi there danish person I don't have time to open a program atm, but I am quite certain that's not an American city, or perhaps not even a real city. If the image doesn't have a source anywhere in the book then it is most likely not a real place, i.e city based on the fantasy of the artist. The use of red to highlight buildings in the city tells me it's probably based on cities arround the mediterranean, most likely in italy, Turkey, former Yugoslavian countries or perhaps even Greece or Morocco... you never know, but I like I said, I don't think this is an actual place take care,

Greekman: a good choise I don't know how you guys do it across the "pond", but I find all my courses very interesting. I am now at my second semester in "urban & regional planning" and I currently have courses in the "history and tradition of urban & regional planning" (mainly about towns in Norway from year 400 -> recent history, but also ancient history), "introduction to national and regional planning". I also have courses in AutoCAD and Adobe programs. Last sememster we had courses in GIS systems and overall introduction courses to different forms of planning. GOOD STUFF! take care,

Dan: 5 actually, a masters degree in Norway is 5 years. 3 years to a bachelor degree, then 2 more for the masters... Duke: ...and without architects the stuff you build is going to look like crap, and without the welders, concrete specialists etc. the building won't stand and your calculations are worth nothing... the list goes on, what was your point exactly?

Hi there sneakypete, welcome to ST! I visited a friend in Brisbane in June/July 2008, a VERY long flight for a Norwegian I can tell you that much (~35Hrs with waits). Anyhoo, I do remember that highway in and out of Brissie CBD, I can also remember you guys having quite the fancy bus-line with it's own separate roads. Quite neat! I stayed in Upper Mt.Gravatt if that tells you anything... So, to the highways that are close to me: Oslo area E18 E6 Ring-road 3 Ring-road 1 (E18) Ring-road 2 - A very poorly planned highway system in Oslo as you can see... take care, -
wow, talk about raising an old thread back from the dead...

Astro: Hi, you are facing a very common problem when it comes to planning. I am taking my masters degree in urban planning here in Oslo Norway, and I am also playing SC4 on the side now and then. Although SC4 is a fun game and is great for ideas and just in general a good educational tool, my personal opinion is that the average citizen probably wouldn't gain much from it as a front for information. People want to know what their neighborhood will look like from their point of view, not a birds point of view (which is the standard ingame view). The game is sadly not advanced enough to show every detail about what and when things will change, aswell as before/after shot's etc. Instead of using a computer game, which has it's limits, I'd rather use a quick and easy presentation 3D-tool, like google sketchUp and create the area from scratch and show the people who will be affected by the changes in a more interactive way. I.e. send the inhabitants link's to your website for a specific video of their area, showing what will be changed if the plans go through, and what they can do to if they disagree on some point... This way you can have the inhabitants "walk" through the new area, and ask them for feedback. I think it'll be less work, and far superior to what SC4 can manage to do. good luck, hope you find a solution! take care,

Currently my "home town" is Oslo, and one of the most beautiful places you can be in Oslo is on the Akershus Castle and stronghold. It's lovely at any time of the year, especially at night! I was also stationed there quite often when I was in the Royal guard. ,take care -

Someone should tell him that they didn't have cars roughly 2000 years ago...

yelllowguy88: Here in Norway there are no longer any rules as to what a city should have, though earlier it would not be a city if it didn't have a postoffice, local firedept. police and doctors office.quote> if youre thinking of before that even, it depended on trading power... Duke87: If you read the whole post on SC4D, I said there that it was a translation of a Norwegian article I found years ago at school. I also said the article does not talk about 13 things "that define a city", it says 13 things that a city must have to be "perfect". The title again, is a translation... about f.ex crap, it was years ago, we use e.g here aswell, guess I did not think about it back then. 4. Local shops; read the descripion stated under in that same post. 7. Not to sound disrespecitve, but I am pretty sure the Bronx is not a "perfect" city/district, and that is what the article is about. The 150m rule is of course an impossible rule for many urban cities, but then again it is meant as the best possible distance. I don't have the original copy of the article anymore, but I am sure they mean that a playground can be as little as a small piece of open grass and mayhaps even just a swing... 9. You've grown up in the US, and this article is written from a European point of view. In moderatly narrow streets we meen streets that have room for just enough cars, but gives the population the possibility to ride their bikes to work, or walk. That might sound strange to you, but your cities are built so that you can drive everywhere, on broad streets. That is not the case in most european cities, and yes riding your bike to work is both better for you, the city and the environment. - again duke, the article was a translation of an article from a norwegian scientific magazine, originally written years ago. If I had the article today I would rewrite the post, that is not the case however. The article is also about what makes a city "perfect", and NOT what makes a city a city. Few cities are considered perfect, it is just a list of thoughts made by scientists and planners, not actual rules. - thanks for your thoughts on the article though, just make sure to read it more thoroughly the next time

Depending on how you calculate what inhabitants belong to the city, region, metro etc. Dublin City has a pop. of ca. 506,000, and Oslo a pop. of 570,000. Which makes Oslo City larger than Dublins. Though If you look at the metro/region area, Dublin has a pop. of 1,6 millions and Oslo a pop. of 1,1 millions. I guess it is all dependant on how you calculate density in an urban area, or if you calculate the city in political city limits. Here in Norway there are no longer any rules as to what a city should have, though earlier it would not be a city if it didn't have a postoffice, local firedept. police and doctors office. I come from a town that has held the title as a city since 1816, and it only has a pop. of 20,000. I'm studying urban planning atm. so this is a pretty interesting subject for me ,take care

can we get back on topic PLEASE! it would be great if you could make your own topic to discuss this, or do it over PM... or MSN... or what ever... ,take care

wooow... thats not good, someone actually mentioned Oslo in here... Oslo is not a nice city. Sure it has got some nice parts, but most of the city is either way to "high-tec" and commercialist, or industrial and gloomy. I love the city, don't misunderstand me, but it still is not beautiful. Bergen, on the other hand is VERY beautiful, I would very much like to go there: Bergen has about 250,000 inhb, but greater Bergen has around 370,000, lots of fjords and mountains, so not much space to build on. btw, I live in the suburbs of "greater Oslo" (about 1,1 million inhb.), 25 minutes out from CBD. ,take care
