Discussion about Always-On Connection to Origin
Jezus53 replied to neurokirurgi's topic in SimCity (2013) General Discussion
I live in Silcon Valley, the technology capital of the world, and I don't have internet. I literally do not have internet. My only access is through my phone. When I go on vacation to the delta area I like to bring my laptop to play games at night, we don't even have a phone line where I go. When I went to Malta a few years ago I was on a plane for 12 hours without internet. There are many instances where internet is not readily available. What's more is that I spent over a thousand dollars on my computer, 60 bucks on their game, and to use all that I have to pay a monthly fee just to play, i.e., my internet bill? Just seems really dumb. I only play games in single player or vs. AI mode so multiplayer is just something I don't care about, so why should I need an internet connection to do that? If they truly cared about protecting their game they take that money they invest into the servers and the bandwidth and upkeep of the orgin servers and lower the price of the games. I swear if games were 40 bucks instead of 60 I would buy a lot more of them. But whatever, they don't care. -
Your opinion - What is the best way to start a city?
Jezus53 replied to LioRose's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Over time I have found it is best to plan ahead, WAY ahead. In a region I'm working on now I have gaps about 2-5 tiles wide in strategic spots where I feel a highway or some other transportation line might go. I also leave a tile gap in my grids. So for example if I have 8 by 6 grid with zones facing the 8 tile side, I'll have a 1 tile wide, 8 tile long gap benhind the buildings so I can expand my road into an avenue or simply through in an elevated rail line or something. My cities are mostly transportation marvels, I could care less if I have skyscrapers. As long as I'm in the green, and so is my traffic, then I'm happy! -

Although this is true, you can find the biggest selection and combination of stations and networks in the RTMT v3.50 package. If you get this, be sure to install the RTMT v3.60 update as well, as it includes important fixes and adds stations for additional networks. And you can find still more stations in the RTMT Interim T-RAM Stations package. Well I stand corrected! It's been awhile for me and I couldn't find anything in the STEX, though, I am horrible at finding anything whether it be online or in my room... -
I'd have to say I love the rural life. I am not a people person, so naturally, I hate being around people! That's why rural life seems great. I'd love to be secluded from the world, surrounded by people are actually friendly and are aware of other people. See that's problem. Here, no one cares about other people. Hell, I say hello to people and they don't say anything back. What's up with that? Is it so hard to even give me a smile and a nod? Either way, my parents and I are moving to a more rural area soon so I guess I'll get to see how it's like! That being said, I do hate how there is no internet out there. Best we'll be able to get is 256K down/upload. Oh well... On the topic of suburbia, it sucks. There's nothing like living where the nearest bus stop is 15 minutes, nearest subway/ground level rail is 20 minutes, and the train is an hour walk away. Then to even get to the highway is another 10 minutes and at least another 10 to get to the nearest place to do anything. And even then there isn't much to do, and I live in one of the 10 largest cities in the US! I guess you could say I have the worst of both worlds. I have the rural secludedness and the urban congestion.

Hey everyone. I've been playing this game for a few months now and I must say, I love it. The best part, for me, is just seeing what kind of buildings you can make. Of course, I cheat a little by spawning materials since mining all of the stone, gold, and diamond I use would be nearly impossible! I'll post some pics when I get the chance so you all can see what kind of things I'm talking about. As for a simtropolis server? I'd love to host it but my internet can barely handle me and my girlfriend! Plus I'm moving out into the boonies soon and they don't even have DSL. All I'll get is 256K satellite. Oh well...

Here are two of the major things Moose mentioned that you'll need to develop a strong transportation system. First is the NAM: NAM And the Network Widening mod: NWM The NAM is a must when building a city. It makes your sims more efficient when working out their commute and it adjusts the capacity of transportation networks to a more reasonable level. The Network Widening Mod, or NWM, adds a few new road types to not only add a more realistic look, but help the flow of traffic with larger roads networks like 6 land avenues and 5 lane one way road. For the Road Top Mass Transit just look in the stex for "Avenue Bus stop" or "Road Bus stop" or something. There isn't just one file like the NAM. Just test out different things and you'll eventually get the hang out it. Good luck! -
If you lower your transportation funding, specifically roads, then potholes and worn roads will appear in the game and will have to be replaced. Same goes for the water (water pipes) and power budget (Power Lines). It's really fun with the power lines cause they spark and if there are flammable objects near by they'll catch on fire. Fun stuff. Personally I wish there was an option to turn ALL disasters in the game. It is so much more fun to rebuild in a random spot than know what I'd have to once I crash a giant space rock into the ground. Plus, I can't bring myself to destroy my own creations. I don't view myself as God in this game but as an all powerful mayor. To be honest, I would actually go one step further and ask for the option to check off what disasters I want. Example, I don't care for the giant robot since it's not to realistic so I could uncheck that disaster so it'll never happen.

Cacks, those are amazing mosaics. REally beautiful night shots. And that rail interchange looks so clean. I love it! This is something I made last night. I needed to transition to RHW-2 from RHW-4 But I couldn't really make anything clean. To me, throwing an uneeded s-cure to go into an s-curve transition just looks horrific. Anyways, I knew I needed an off ramp to begin a town and I need to transition from RHW-4 to RHW-2 and viola! I cam up with this beauty. It's simple and works. Just how I like it!

Does heavy industry require water?
Jezus53 replied to Pipcard's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
To add on to this, if you give water to your dirt and manufacturing industry you can't remove it. Even though they do not require it, in my experience, once you remove the water, the buildings get the no water zot and will abandon due to lack of water. So make sure you really want to add water! -
I finally got a fix going for my problem. Instead of splitting when the west highway intersects the North/south highway, I simply split it ahead of time and avoid any unneeded headaches for my sims! Blue Lightning: Thanks for the tip. I was away this weekend so I didn't get your advice till after I figured out my work around. Thank you for the help though.

It's been awile since I've viewed this thread and made a contribution, but I come to you all in need of help. I recently expanded this interchange https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/thmsklly/Konradshohe.png so the highway can move to the north allowing regional expansion. Well this is what I've came up with https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/thmsklly/Intersection4.png It seemed perfect till I realized I don't have a way for people coming from the east to get to the west side of the freeway without having to go north and make a u-turn. Now, I can easily solve this problem by using more space, but there comes the main problem. I've already destroyed half the industry and moved it north to accomidate this highway, and the north is full, which is why I'm expanding beyond this city. I wish to not destroy any more buildings so the space you see in the next few pitcures is what I have to work with. Also, I only have 21,000 simoleans and I like to play as realistically as posible so there is no cheating for me and I will take out a loan if the idea is a really good one. https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/thmsklly/SC4/Intersection1.png https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/thmsklly/SC4/Intersection2.png https://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b299/thmsklly/SC4/Intersection3-1.png So any ideas my fellow interchangians? Any help is appreciated. Also, here's a couple of my past interchanges. Not sure what I was thinking by putting those buildings in the colverleaf, but I guess it made sense at the time! I call this one the "What in God's name have you gotten yourself into intercahnge." I have more close ups if you'd like. As a daily commuter, I hate traffic and I hate inefficient highways, this design was an idea I had to make an efficient cloverleaf. Basically, you have "express" type lanes that bypass all of the on and off ramps by going under (north south) and going over (east west).

SimCity is Like StarCraft. Until this year, all we had was the Original StarCraft (March 1998) and the expansion Brood War (November 1998). All we had was that for 12 years! And it lived strong. Hell, I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but there are televised tournaments for it in South Korea. They have guys that are pro, like a pro baseball player or football player status. It's intense stuff. This is still going on for the original, even after the release of SC2. The top SC1 guy just switched to SC2, 3 months after the release. I know I still play some of the original for nostalgia purposes. So just because a game is old does not mean it is automatically dying, it's just old.
