Creation can mean an asset, a mod or a city. Since we are in the last year of Cities Skylines 1, I thought it would be cool to travel down memory lane with some visuals and see how we've grown and still growing. I'll kick it off with some of mine My first Cities Skylines tree First good tree First Building First map First train First City

Cities Skylines 2 Out Now!
Mr_Maison replied to Ulisse Wolf's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
I don't believe I didn't come here Tuesday! Well I was fortunate to get early access and have a little over 145 hours in. For playing vanilla, I been having a lot of fun. It may have some issues atm but I can say overall, it runs way better than CS1 so far and they are working to get things better. I'm on i7-8700k, RTX 3060Ti, 32gb RAM, 1080p monitor. -
Cities Skylines II Announced - Release Date and Pricing
Mr_Maison replied to Samerton's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
I'm very excited for CS2. Remember the footage of the videos posted recently showing gameplay up to Grand Village is the game in beta so I expect things to improve. I like what I see so far though. In many ways through watching videos and reading the dev diary documents, CS2 is a step up from CS1. The road tools alone look awesome. And then think once the game is released, the creative big bang begins and it gets way better by talents in the community. To me what comes about through modding is the real development for our enjoyment. I mean look at what the community did with SC4 all on our own. The fact we have the developers working with modders is a gift too. -
Cities Skylines II Announced - Release Date and Pricing
Mr_Maison replied to Samerton's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
Wow...CIM and CIM2 have nothing to do with Cities Skylines except they are made by the same developer. CO now have 30 staff members so a lot has changed. Please name me a game with 0 bugs and issues? How easy do you think it is to re-write an entire game code based on an old version of Unity? $4.99-$14.99 is overpriced? You speak as though CO are on EA levels or something intending to exploit and do harm to the base and it's just not consistent with reality. If not for the modding community SC4 would've been dead long ago because EA destroyed the franchise. Tell me you would play SC4 pure vanilla? What I'm saying is in the case of Cities Skylines, the City Builder community is in a good relationship with developers. And being a creative sandbox game, many aspects of enjoyment are subjective. The game for the most part just like every other city building game will always be what we make of it. Though with some limitations, it's nice to have a company that supports our efforts no? -

Cities Skylines II Announced - Release Date and Pricing
Mr_Maison replied to Samerton's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
Remember that Colossal Order did not expect the epic response to Cities Skylines when they made it. And it was made with 9 people on staff back then. The modding community is as great as this SC4 community which I still consider myself to be a part of. I'm actually looking forward to the sequel. At least I can feel confident that we are not getting treated the way Monte Cristo did us back in 2009 when they invited us into a thread so we can share ideas to them for over a year just to get mostly nothing anyone was asking for. Not even mass transit. And remember Societies and others who wanted to take SC4's crown but just did not listen to the players. And how about Maxis and EA? Not saying some players do not enjoy those games but to me, Cities Skylines gives us many things that was on SC4 players wish list for many years that other city builders failed at doing. I got to know the staff I can say they are great people and we are in good hands. They embrace modding like no other and we have a city builder that was not abandoned or ruined by the publisher. Many of us got to meet each other in person in different countries in events sponsored by Paradox and CO and some even got hired. How many gaming companies and studios do this? -
Another great video by Paradox showcasing one of our talented creators, Avanya!

20yearsSC4 SC4: 2023 (20th Anniversary)
Mr_Maison replied to SIM-ple Jack's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I had to come in and join the party! Happy 20th Birthday SC4! My journey started with SC2000 and then 3000 before SC4. Back in the day waiting for the running man with the dialup noise so I can log into Simtropolis I still have my discs and even the SC3000 book. Also the books for SC4 and the discs. I wish Windows 10 didn't kill my dvd drive or I would dig up some old screenshots. Maybe I will find a way and come back with some. And it's so good to see SC4 still going. This is ground zero for my city building journey and I wish some of the new games took this site as a great example of how to keep a community in one place where our posts don't have the lifespan of a gnat. So I would also say Thank You Simtropolis!- 46 Replies

You can use the marque in the zoning options and control how many squares gets zoned. Or you can use Plop the Growables mod and place buildings one by one. -
Did 'Cities Skylines' Kind of Kill The City Builder Genre For a While?
Mr_Maison replied to calpolyfan's topic in Cities: Skylines General Discussion
Wow, looks like I missed this thread years ago. Technically sure every game have it's pros and cons especially a fully 3D city simulator with it's many complex challenges. But tell me what other city builder allows us with the support of the developers to make things and immerse ourselves in a 3D world like the images below? We can go on first person rides with pretty much anything that moves. If this isn't a great 3D painter, I don't know what is. CO did very well for us city builders and by the looks of it, my beloved SC4 is still doing very well to date too. We're all family here. -

3D modeller creating new CSL assets
Mr_Maison replied to D3ad10ck's topic in Cities: Skylines Modding - Open Discussion
All the best with your modeling for CS! Looking forward to seeing your work in game and in screenshots. As for Discord, there are a few for Cities Skylines (wishing we come visit here more often). I'm not savvy with getting invite links but I will ask around to get you some help. Not sure if you would be interested in nature stuff but we also have a CS discord focused on nature where I happen to be an admin. https://discord.gg/RHye56YjW3 -
Well, SC4 have such a section so why not here....and I love nature. Let's show off our natural landscapes and countrysides. I'll begin with some of my latest screenshots

As I gazed at the peeks of MrMiyagi's Paradise Reef green mountains, I said to myself, it would be nice if we could have clouds that brushed against the mountains like we see in the Caribbean and many tropical locations where some clouds hang low. Or even look down through clouds at our cities and regions. Or how about taking a first person flight through them in a plane or helicopter. Then @RonyX69 provides us with a script for the rotor shader so we can have semi-transparency and eventually it hit me to try and make 3D cloud billboards just to see what would happen. I also took inspiration from the cloud billboards in Flight Simulator X. I have mixed feelings about the results so far and I'm not sure if this will go all the way to a workshop item. But I think it's worth a try. Starting the billboard method: First thing is to make a plane and map it with the desired cloud texture. Then it's important to duplicate the plane, flip it so the normals are facing opposite directions, offset it a bit so no z-fighting, and then mirror the UV in both X and Y (in Blender). At this point there is a lot more experimenting to do in order to get an good billboard orientation to see a seamless cloud when rotating the best we can so we don't see too many edges from the sides. I will be studying cloud billboard methods and share any interesting info I find. There are many possibilities with all kinds of cloud formations. How the game renders them...so far: The clouds do not have a smooth transition between the closeup intended look and the LODs. At LOD distance, they develop hard edges and lose the fluffiness. They also disappear off and on I think when in LOD transition. I don't know if this is a permanent limitation with the rotor shader or if we can overcome it. If not, the best this kind of asset can be is screenshot candy. Also it would be a good idea to make some kind of anchor like a rock so when you want to bulldoze the clouds, you know where the base is since it's high above. Current challenge: To make better cloud billboards and see if the LOD transition can be improved. Below are some screenshots of my experiment so far. I did the mesh as a quick test model so please excuse the shape. The rest are shots I took forcing good angles with the camera Next I will make better billboard formations. Maybe some can be simple flat meshes for shots right under or over them. All thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Cloud Assets Experiment
Mr_Maison replied to Mr_Maison's topic in Cities: Skylines Modding - Open Discussion
So after looking into it again today, I'm reminded that making them into props actually did not solve the saved game water in the sky craziness. Unless I can find a good template that will remedy this issue, this will not be released.- 23 Replies
