SimCity 4: New ways to push the game
Mister Giggles replied to SUPERMESSI's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Multi-threading back in your day and multi-threading now are two different beasts. Many modern games are multi-threaded and run fine on 2-8+ cores, no super computers needed. -
PIM-X is able to convert landmarks to growables without issue... It is not difficult to manually convert a building from one occupant type to another. Capacity Satisfied, Occupant Types and Occupant Groups must be changed in the building exemplar, and the LotConfigPropertyZoneTypes, LotConfigPropertyWealthTypes, and LotConfigPropertyPurposeTypes properties need to be changed in the lot file. Once these are altered to match the new occupant type in mind, PIM-X can do the rest and balance the building's numbers to reflect its new designation. If a mistake was made during the process, PIM-X will not see the building and/or lot file.

Problem with Cascadia Tree Controller, two props missing
Mister Giggles replied to Wodong's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
You know, I've always wondered if Simtropolis was banned in China. Since you're using a VPN to access the site, I suppose my question is answered. ...anyway, my dear dissident, you're missing dependencies. There are several different props that use those two names, so there are several different possible missing dependencies. You'll want to get DataNode if you still find boxes, so you can open up the tree controller and be able to point out exactly which of the props is still missing something. Further help otherwise would prove difficult, as I've linked to all prop packs involved in making those series of trees unwrap themselves.- 4 Replies

City with 80K population crashing to desktop on Ubuntu
Mister Giggles replied to Oren's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
Loading the LotConfig file with DataNode will crash the program. I have isolated the cause of this crash. There is a malformed transit-enabling property in the lot file. It is called 0x88EDCA1C, but is strangely stuck at the bottom in the list of properties. Deleting it using Reader will allow Datanode to properly load the file. Perhaps it will also fix the crash you're experiencing. If not, perhaps also delete the other transit enabling property at 0x88EDC98F. If you delete this one, you'll need to reindex the file in order for the lot to properly function. -

[Solved] NAM + Virtualbox Issues
Mister Giggles replied to RobertLM78's topic in NAM & Transit Networks
...never knew XP could run in 4 bit color depth. At first blush, seems to be a VirtualBox/Linux bug. SC4 works fine with WINE on Mint. At least, I haven't had problems with the official Nvidia drivers that weren't my own fault. -
You may wish to reinstall the prop pack, and verify its existence.

Query info and path query info don't match
Mister Giggles replied to clif9710's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Yes, SimCity 4 will uninstall itself once a city reaches 500 years. It was one of the biggest complaints about the game back when it came out. EA defended the decision as a necessary feature against piracy, and finally started perma-banning people from the internet when they complained. Really, it was a complete mess for a while until the NAM team decompiled the executable and reprogrammed an array to allow the game to run a city for up to 1000 years before the uninstall occurs. Back then, most cities never made it past 800 years due to the "prop propagation phenomena" which resulted in everything becoming a prop and the city being reduced to a comedic parody of itself, so 1,000 years was thought good enough. Unfortunately, with the introduction of the CAM expansion series, 1,000 years became just the starting point for a successful city. Worse, the RippleJet Accords from a few years prior made it illegal to alter the executable. This is often seen as an acceptable sacrifice, considering the brutality of the BSC civil wars before RippleJet's cunning diplomatic solution. Thankfully, there's a mod hereabouts that detects when a city is nearing 1,000 years and handles the uninstallation and reinstallation process automagically. However, you may find your city full of nude gnomes replacing the flora afterwards. No one is quite sure why, but we suspect it was introduced by a Maxis employee as a cry for help for their treatment under the 2nd EA management change of 2002. Anyway, there's no known solution so it's best you keep a back up of your cities. Just in case. Unless you want to keep the naked gnomes, and that's perfectly okay too. We won't judge. Much. -
Most CAMelots have their own particular dependency packages, so downloading one for one building won't get you the model files needed for another most of the time. I suspect you still don't have the prop files needed to make the Winterburnes unwrap themselves. The read mes will link directly to the correct dependencies in the vast majority of cases, and the thread I linked to earlier will enable you to find links to dependencies for most CAMelots in existence.
-
Everyone should have those, regardless of whether or not a particular lot uses them; Maxis buildings are used as props in hundreds of lots, especially farm-related ones. Really, you're just future proofing yourself.
-
Alright. Just to make sure we're on the same page: You've installed this prop pack, WTC_Prop_One World Trade.dat and WTC_Prop_Two World Trade.dat exist in your My Documents/SimCity 4/Plugins/BSC/BSCProps folder (Default install location), and the buildings still show up as brown boxes ingame?
-
Could you name one of buildings presenting themselves as brown boxes?
-
If you have brown boxes, you don't have all the dependencies needed for those buildings to work. The CAM is a bit pain-in-the-butt due to all the installers. Just query the thing missing the thing and go search for it here. If you have a very specific missing thing and cannot find it, then tell us what you're needing and we'll find it cuz we're special. And stuff. Mostly stuff.

Try ye olde version or ye Tropod's version of the Reader. The former doesn't have the issue, and I'd wager the bug has been fixed in the latter's. If not, Tropod is still around to get yelled at...

SimCity 4 and 32-bit color in full screen
Mister Giggles replied to Mister Giggles's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
In my opinion there are two issues. 1: SimCity 4 doesn't run in 32-bit color mode. Never has. No one noticed since, with dithering, you never saw the color banding. At this juncture I am willing to accept it as either a game bug or DirectX bug. 2: Both AMD and Nvidia removed dithering from their drivers several years ago. It could be that the game is still running in 16-bit color for Nonny while WINE's behavior is causing SC4 to incorrectly report it. Or it could be that WINE, in combination with the open source drivers, is actually causing SC4 to run into 32-bit color depth. All I know is that on Linux Mint, using the official Nvidia drivers, I still get locked into 16-bit color. EA should release, at minimum, a patch to enable disc-based versions of the game to function without the DRM. Fixing the 16-bit color depth bug would be a nice bonus... Multi-threading SC4 would require rewriting the engine to take advantage of the concept. We'll be getting the source code before EA will spend that kind of time and money. Especially the modern, hilariously evil EA. You'd most likely get the proper behavior, because the hardware is old and will use old drivers.- 29 Replies

First SimPeg, now SC4Devotion. The chessmaster behind this conspiracy against SimCity 4 is moving quickly. Soon they'll be coming for Simtropolis, unless... *Drum roll* ...unless Dirk is behind everything, slowly manipulating the internet to place Simtropolis as the only source of SC4 mods and information! He will become a GOD! This is like Breaking Bad, except with video game sites. And less people in barrels. Well, hopefully.

SimCity 4 and 32-bit color in full screen
Mister Giggles replied to Mister Giggles's topic in SC4 Bugs & Technical Issues
It impacts Radeon cards, as well. It's a nigh universal problem. Nonny is unique at the moment, since his game is running in 32-bit depth mode in full screen. He's also running Linux and the open source drivers for his video card, so he's not representative of the populace. Sadly.- 29 Replies

It's a transient desirability effect that stacks on top of whatever else is already there. You find this with freshly plopped park, trees, and the areas where you use God mode flora. You'll also find this element with new roads...

Ah, I see. He zoned a large contiguous zone, then split it up by dezoning a tile. SimCity 4 may or may not fill up a large zoned area depending on its mood, so he helped seed growth by giving SC4 less space it had to care about.
