Mustering Baron Nik, husband of Admiral Hestorb, has been at home reviewing military information from Schulmania. The news from the eastern front has not been good lately and he is growing concerned that Harar’s dependence upon the Bureau of Feline Affairs Military Command for its defense may put it at risk of invasion if the BFA’s forces are depleted in the defense of Schulmania. He decided that it’s about time that Harar recruits soldiers to send to the BFA. And, surely, plenty of residents will want to join in the fight He went to the palace to have an audience with Queen Vera and to the BFA offices to discuss his plan Baron Nik’s plan was warmly received by the BFA and by Queen Vera. He was authorized to canvass the land from coast to coast to assemble a force estimated to be 8-10,000 strong and march them north into Schulmania for training in The Wirdleplex. The force, to be called the Royal Harar Volunteers, would be a new division fighting under the BFA Military Command structure. Nik, promoted to General in the BFA Military, wasted no time circulating around Lake Felis to recruit volunteers His first recruit was so eager that he came with his own armor! As Nik made the rounds about Lake Felis, more and more volunteers agreed to join him on this noble quest Nik became concerned that he had too many volunteers from the capital… nearly 1/3 of the citizens were ready to leave their homes at a moment’s notice. Though it would make Lake Felis much smaller, he thought it would still be prudent to take the larger force. Nik stopped at the national cathedral to secure blessings upon his journey around the country and his upcoming quest before heading out into the Harar wilderness in search of recruits His journey carried him west past Huddleston to the coast and netted him hundreds of volunteers He went east, up and down the coast from Tangaloor In all, Nik’s volunteers far exceeded the estimates by military planners. He led a force of 28,857 recruits in a quick march north across the Schulmappalachian Mountains and toward The Wirdleplex… and destiny. <------Click here to see the revolving globe showing Harar's visitors!

Interregnum The Royal Protectorate of Harar has joined Schulmania in a period of mourning for the passing of Admiral Hestorb’s first life on 15 December 2011. (The official announcement is https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/journals/698/entry-14709-admiral-hestorb/ and includes a link to the official tribute page) The Admiral’s first life has been selected to reside in Stovokor, home of the honored warrior dead. Her second life has begun and she will resume her throne in Schulmania, there to reign indefinitely with her new life and her seven additional ones. Before beginning her official duties, she will take an extended leave of absence to rest with her husband, Baron Nik, in Lake Felis. Baron Nik informed the local citizens that the eyes of the feline world will be fixed upon Lake Felis when the Admiral arrives Local shopkeepers expect to make a fortune on Admiral-themed merchandise Some residents are leasing extra rooms in hope of making money from the expected hordes of her admirers Anticipation is mounting… And excitement builds as word reaches town that the baron’s entourage is nearing the town The lakeside terrace has been readied for a welcome party The Bureau of Feline Affairs compound is prepared for its highest profile time ever. Governor-General H. J. “Hoppy” Franciflora will be in residence for an extended period as he helps Admiral Hestorb begin her second life. Lake Felis will be the center of the feline diplomatic universe. Queen Vera will be pleased to have so many family members visiting. The Governor-General will be staying at the Royal Palace along with her husband, Chancellor Mooky, and several members of the BFA Privy Council coming from The Wirdleplex. The Lady of the Hour, however, will be staying at her husband’s manor on the outskirts of Lake Felis. Château de Fancy Feast - the seat of the Barony of Lake Felis, center of power for the Harar capital region. Here, she will rest and prepare for her second life in Schulmania. She will not make any public appearances during this transition time. However, she will be out and about in Lake Felis and her many fans will be excited to see her in action again. Having left her throne in capable paws, she can focus on preparing to reassume a leadership role in her nation and its military. And this leadership is sorely needed, lest Queensferry seize this transitional period as an opportunity to make inroads into feline territory. Admiral Hestorb and Baron Nik thank you for your kind thoughts and warm regards. The best part of feline life in Schulmania is that all nine lives may be lived to the fullest. And though one cannot feel the purrs from this computer screen; the warmth is real, generated from the hearts of those who remember. Admiral Hestorb: first life 11 December 1997, second life 15 December 2011. Fama semper vivit. <------Click here to see the revolving globe showing Harar's visitors!

Entertaining Lake Felis Lake Felis is the permanent capital of Harar. Interestingly enough, it is situated on the southern shores of none other than Lake Felis. There are very few developments in this nation of predominantly traditional felines leading non-domesticated lives. But, paperwork needs to be done somewhere. And of course Queen Vera is not inclined to sit under a tree waiting for a rainstorm to end. Therefore, the small city was built along the most feline of landforms. The capital remains at Lake Felis but the government follows the court. Queen Vera is in residence about half of the year. The other six months, the itinerant court migrates northward to the mountains and then gradually makes its way to Lake Felis again via Huddleston and the coast. This pattern allows for the queen to avoid the often oppressive heat and humidity associated with a Lake Felis summer. Not many towns can boast of being situated on a cat shaped lake. What a pity! Lake Felis is a small, rustic capital for a highly mobile and non-domiciled population. To us, it looks like a quaint old town. But, to a feline living in the open hills of Harar, coming into Lake Felis is like Vegas on steroids. They are dazzled by the bustling activity and mighty structures. So, as we explore the capital, maybe we, too, will feel the wide eyed wonder of the undomesticated feline. Lake Felis is a bustling community with a lot of activity going on both in the city and its environs. Now that the weather is cooling down, the royal court has moved back from its summer residence in the northern mountains near the Schulmania border. Plenty of activities in the arts and entertainment venues await itinerant courtesans and the Lake Felis populace. The National Theater serve’s as Harar’s largest entertainment venue. Completing the entertainment complex is the Harar Museum of Fur & Whiskers. Near the Bureau of Feline Affairs complex, musicians fill the streets with fine tunes. Most street artists are welcome. But, mimes are usually pounced upon. Down at Tigger’s Pool Hall, local bands are performing in hopes of winning the coveted Crystal Chalice, an award sponsored by Fancy Feast. I can has Crystal Chalice? The Crystal Chalice An open air concert is scheduled for tonight as a welcome home for Queen Vera. At the moment, Queen Vera and her entourage are attending a welcoming service at the National Cathedral. Mayor Wiley Leech has a very nice buffet for the queen and her guests for after the concert Famed feline painted Clawed Monet has been busy in his studio. He has invented a new style of art – claw pointillism. One dips one’s claw point into paint and does pointillism. The painstaking work creates works of true feline beauty. Are you coming to the open air concert on the terrace? The Lake Felis Symphony will be performing selected works of Meowzart, Paw-varotti and Clawed Dubussy. In case you did not know, Paw-varotti lives in Lake Felis. He occupies the penthouse suite at The Mews at Purrington Place, located here on this prominent corner. In fact, Furriano Paw-varotti got his start as a choir member at the National Cathedral when he was just a cute fuzzy little kitten After the evening’s festivities, Queen Vera will again take up residence at the National Palace Come and enjoy Lake Felis Today! <------Click here to see the revolving globe showing Schulmania's visitors!

So, as we explore the capital, maybe we, too, will feel the wide eyed wonder of the undomesticated feline. City Hall is where Mayor Wiley Leech gets to work each day. A few of the key issues currently facing the capital: residents who curl up on warm cobblestone streets to take naps and slow traffic, hairballs, and pawprints on shop windows. The quiet street does not look like the scene for municipal mayhem… but shopowner Millie Nelson says she has to clean pawprints off the windows of her catnip accessories shop at least four times per day. The mayor is considering an ordinance to give any feline who leaves more than 10 prints on a window a squirt of water. She thinks that should be enough disincentive to leaving prints everywhere. In the middle of town close to the palace sits the Bureau of Feline Affairs complex. It serves as the administrative center for the BFA’s handing of Harar’s affairs. Of course the power for domestic affairs is centered on the Royal Palace. The Lake Felis Convention & Visitors Bureau is located here, on Nine Lives Lane Of course in a nation of non-domiciled felines, most of the conventions are outdoors, on The Terrace. The cathedral sits in the center of town near the waterfront. It is where Queen Vera received her crown as ruler of Harar. The Hotel Katzen Jagen Hunde has a great view of The Terrace and the waterfront Lake Felis Institute is the official post-secondary educational institution of the nation. It is fully accredited with the BFA and offers a program of studies fully compatible with Schulmania’s universities.

So, as we explore the capital, maybe we, too, will feel the wide eyed wonder of the undomesticated feline. After a long trek over the roadless hills and mountains, let’s make the first stop at the Claw Spa, followed by a trip to the Wirdle’s Head Pub next door. The Bureau of Feline Affairs provides many services to Harar residents. But, not many post offices. This is the only one in the nation so far. Let’s hope you don’t forget to buy stamps before you leave… In case you were wondering, the cobblestone streets were carved by master craftscats who made sure each stone was paw friendly. The Terrace, Lake Felis’ waterfront park, is the undeveloped shoreline of the lake. There are several walkways and a nicely manicured lawn. And nearby, there are plenty of climbing trees. My, isn’t this urban? Since SimCity does not like to grow residential on cobblestones, just pretend like this is a cobblestone street. Just like this one! Can you spot the subway in this picture? It is there to connect the functional commercial to residential areas. Of course, that’s to please the game. Kitties would not ride a subway. As you can imagine, Queen Vera would not move from her comfortable home in Schulmania to the middle of nowhere without having a few of the comforts of home. So, here’s Harar’s Royal Palace. This structure serves as her residence as well as the seat of government for the nation.

Terraforming Lake Felis Lake Felis is the site of the permanent capital of Harar. Along its shore will be one of the few permanent cities built in a nation of non-domesticated felines. After all, you have to have somewhere for all of the paperwork and assorted bric-a-brac of government, right? And, Queen Vera does enjoy the outdoors but she does not like getting rained on. The trek over the Schulmappalachian Mountains from Schulmania is long and tiring, so it is nice to have a place to rest and recuperate. From here, the Bureau of Feline Affairs manages the royal protectorate and felines from across the nation trek to when they need something. And now, on to the terraforming. To create the lake, I selected a flattish part of a fairly bumpy terrain for the new lake. I used the various God Mode tools to get me started and finished off with Mayor Mode tools. I decided to make the lake freehand, so as to make it more organic in appearance and reasonably plausible that a lake such as this might have just naturally spring forth. Although, of course, I have not seen such a lake as this before. Then again, I have not seen that many lakes, either. So, you never know. Lest I spoil the surprise, I will start with some closer in pictures from the lake area. I will close with a broader shot, which will explain everything. Now, don’t cheat and scroll to the bottom… let the suspense build. I am mostly showing you the isles in the lake. I have added a little flora to them but may add more before they are declared “complete.” Ta-daa! Now you know why it is called Lake Felis! Doesn’t this look like the perfect spot for a feline capital? In the coming chapters, we will see the town, destined to be the biggest in Harar but still quite small by our standards.
