The future of Fairview's development

  1. 1. How Fairview should be developed from now on?

We all miss Cori and I really hope soon she'll be with us again *:golly:

This entry will be very different. In case you're wondering why it's been so quiet here, I've had been too busy with my report of my postgraduate studies at environmental engineering. I've finished it for now, so I have more free time to work again with my CJ. It was also a good chance to re-evaluate some things about Fairview and how things should be going on from now. As you might have noticed, I'm developing Fairview town by town, city tile by city tile. Develop one city tile to its maximum capacity, save it, go to the next tile, develop it too, save, next, develop, repeat. You get the idea. You've been here from the day 1 of this CJ. Nowadays I'm seriously thinking about following a different strategy, where Fairview will be developed in a more regional and holistic approach instead of piece by piece. I've already build the regional magnetic railroad of Fairview and I'm thinking about making the same thing with the rest of the infrastructures as well, such as the main roads, the streets, the water pipes, the subway, the streets and the zones. Kind of like making a big cake layer by layer instead of individual cupcakes putting them together.

For this reason, I decided to make a poll to read your opinions and ideas about the future of Fairview. How should I develop my futuristic, solarpunk region from now on? Would you like to see a piece-by-piece or a holistic approach? A new town per entry or a new infrastructure per entry? Or maybe a mix of them, sometimes regionally and sometimes locally? Feel free to express yourself. Just don't tell me to "build a coal power plant because it's realistic" * *:P

For now here I have plans for new towns, with two of them under construction. One of them will be dedicated to a very special member. Can you guess who?

Cheer up. I think she's going to do very well. As usual. I have voted for a mix of the two.

Hi Terring. Nice to see you back again.

As I employ regional playstyle in my own CJ, I am strongly inclined towards this approach. We'll see what others have to say. *;)

Of course, my egocentrism tells me to believe that I am this very special member. :lol: But since "Cricket Cove" had already appeared in someone else's CJ, I think it's not the case. Shut up egocentrism!!! :D Perhaps it's Cyclone or Mitsos this time?

Coal plant sounds tempting.

But seriously, if you have an opportunity and resources, experimenting with green roof / green walls approach might look good in your CJ. My personal fav when it comes to livable cities. Something that my IRL city hall is toying with but still not launching yet.

Hiya @Terring, I voted for a mix of both, but I think no matter what you do it will be phenomenal. You're style is one of the coolest around!

Speaking of solarpunk, what got you into that style? I have seen more solarpunk stuff and even created a bit of my own solarpunk art on Midjourney, but honestly I think I didn't even really know about that style until I learned it from you.

Here are a few of the solarpunk works I generated. Who knows, maybe both of these people are in your region? =)

@TheMurderousCricket: Thank you very much. To be honest, a more regional gameplay indeed comes very handy for my project. There have been times that I wanted to build something but I had to wait until I finished some of my cities to do it. With a more regional approach that's not necessary anymore. Making a step back to see the whole picture helps a lot. I also have some props to customize my buildings by adding green roofs and walls, and I've already put the idea to the test at some Maxis buildings. So you maybe can expect more green roofs and walls in my CJ.

@Daeris: Thank you very much. I'm an environmental engineer and I've been supporting The Venus Project since 2004. As you can see, discovering the solarpunk aesthetic and philosophy was only a matter of time. Your pictures are great and I wouldn't be surprised if those people are in Fairview. But to be honest, they look less like solarpunk and more like a cool mix of steampunk and cyberpunk, especially the first picture with the badass lady wearing Victorian-Western clothes and holding a futuristic revolver. A more solarpunk style would be something like this:

For more information and examples on solarpunk, I recommend checking r/solarpunk, r/SolarpunkPorn and r/ImaginarySolarPunk on Reddit. You'll find a lot of ideas and inspiration for your works :)

I think Midjourney likes to combine the "punks" together, lol. So sometimes striving for solarpunk themes does combine it a bit with some more steampunk or cyberpunk elements.

Solarpunk is a relatively young genre and it's not as popular as steampunk and cyberpunk. Maybe this is why Midjourney mixes those "punks" together in an attempt to recreate what you ask it to create.

I like the idea of a few settlements and towns within the region beginning to grow around the same time.  And then as time goes by it's interesting to see the different speed, size, growth and characteristics of each city.  Some growing faster and taller, others slower to become small, but content little towns, and some turning into hubs for railway or industry, or tourism...

The 2 solarpunk city pictures you posted above instantly reminded me of the Matt Damon/Jodie Foster movie Elysium!  Beautiful, green, futuristic world.  :)

@jonnboy1976: I think I know what do you mean. Multiple cities under construction at the same time but not necessary at the same pace. Sounds like a more organic and realistic development of the region and I also tend to think that's definitely better and more reasonable than city-per-city development. It also gives me more freedom to build various infrastructures in different towns and times depending on the region's needs, making Fairview even more organic and adaptable in changes. Of course don't forget that we're into the future, so new technologies such as 3D printing and modular construction could speed up a lot the construction of those town.

I voted city by city, but you could always build some parts regionally like main roads, highways, rails, and then develop homes, buildings, and factories and city by city.
