Entry 79 -- Grid-busting in East Awnsale

rwoQIq.jpg

Entry 79 -- East Awnsale

Welcome back to another entry! Thanks a lot for your comments! If there are stretches of time between entries it is simply because I've busy with story-writing and my accountancy course.

But you'll like this entry as this is all about grid-busting: diagonally and fractionally angled too!

{---}

1.EDixQh.jpg

Today's area which this entry will explore.

2.fFZnPQ.jpg

The FA highway, the M6, was the first feature of Cindersville. Thus the first areas developed were right next to this highway.

3.hzaYu8.jpg

For the FA buildings I used a mixture of C.P.'s and mattb325's FA buildings.

4.fq4pld.jpg

Cindersville has the greatest number of grid-busting city blocks of any city I have created thus far.

5.I3dKAs.jpg

Even orthogonal zoning can have grid-busting if there are diagonal or fractionally angled buildings within the lots.

6.11g7ZE.jpg

7.eo0yfi.jpg

Of course not only is there grid-busting but the countryside is fully MMP-ed up as well!

8.EuM2yA.jpg

9.Kb94jw.jpg

Pure diagonals.

10.f0Dnet.jpg

11.8jiCSg.jpg

The buildings to the right represent the western extent of the southern half of Cindersville's city centre.

12.G2fwAw.jpg

For the back-alleys I used MMP cobble textures.

13.gqCnAb.jpg

14.huezAj.jpg

Further MMPing, this time creating the houses' back gardens.

15.tleJjz.jpg

It took a long while MMPing both the street textures and then positioning the cars.

16.7Ri5vL.jpg

Orthogonal, diagonal and fractionally angled!

17.7VUTke.jpg

Another overview of Eastern Awnsale.

18.GBK6lw.jpg

What we are seeing (up top) is the southern half...

19.EpXkym.jpg

Now it's time to explore the northern half.

20.ogKR5o.jpg

But one more look at those FA buildings!

21.G2Uffa.jpg

This roundabout happened by accident, by chance I realised that there a roundabout could be used to transition from FA-2 to FA-3 roads.

22.AMLNdC.jpg

It's a great little accident because gives the appearance of the main road splitting in two.

23.0CqzDi.jpg

The FA buildings here are C.P.'s industrial buildings.

24.IV2QnR.jpg

Much of the northern half of Eastern Awnsale is built upon the mountain slopes.

25.Xlwwrx.jpg

There are villages further up the slopes yet only trees, ferns and paths separate these two distinct urban areas.

26.pmCiSj.jpg

As can be seen here: to the bottom is the mountain village, on the top is Eastern Awnsale. This mountain village WILL be explored in a later entry.

27.gJrlH9.jpg

The bottom of the picture shows the upper slopes of Pillar, one of the three highest mountains dominating the Cindersville skyline, the other two mountains being Mount Hefnall (already explored) and Rock of Heaven.

28.Fd4x4a.jpg

29.DpQO9h.jpg

Why use one of the parks from the menu when one can create said park with MMPs and a tree controller?

30.fFe5ZB.jpg

This park came about due to much of the area appearing very dry and rocky.

31.4dMMgR.jpg

I emphasised the rockiness with gravel and rock cluster MMPs.

32.ahGMIm.jpg

33.3LGCGr.jpg

I deliberately chose to use ferns for the lower elevations.

34.JCdGR3.jpg

Zooming out we catch a glimpse of the western fringes of the northern half of Cindersville's city centre.

35.HARTaw.jpg

And this is where we get to the really good stuff! Note Pillar in the bottom right- that WILL be explored in a future entry.

36.h3mmNb.jpg

Nearly all of the FA buildings were created by mattb325, they form his FA civic building series.

37.BsSZB4.jpg

This area was MEGA fun to complete!

38.RBScIy.jpg

It's as if SC4 is no longer a grid-based building game!

39.DVopKR.jpg

It also took careful use of fillers to give each one of these FA buildings a notable presence.

40.LEuPJI.jpg

You see these FA buildings usually come in the form of a building or an overhanging building- which leads plenty of space to create building grounds, car parks and other features...

41.GPP2rr.jpg

This would never have been possible three or four years ago. So it's amazing to see how much this game has evolved thanks to new mods, buildings and fillers!

42.IxtrJg.jpg

And the last picture for this entry.

{---}

Where next? Maular Valley!

ow4pn2.jpg

This valley is a VERY special area for it is a blend of suburbs, MMPs, grid-busting and some other unique features!

For next Sunday as I have Thursday and Friday off to extend out my birthday weekend.

See you then!

Really awesome again. The FA to FA roundabout sure is interesting, and looks so subtle and well done.

My question this week is about picture 27. As you know I like fences, hedges, fillers of all kinds. I'm not sure i've ever seen the wall/(fence?) that you've used running directly along the road there before, and I like how slope-tolerant it seems to be, are you able to let me know if it is downloadable or custom? If custom, any idea of the props?

Thanks as always

I'm speechless right now. This is AWESOME! :8) I have never seen so many FA and diagonal buildings and lots before in one place. I really need to look for them for my cities! I know I have most of Matt's work but I am not sure about C.P.'s.

I'm going to send this to my father, who has been a fan of SC4 for as long as I can remember. He was always upset due to the lack of diagonal buildings and stuff like this essentially in the base game. He hasn't played it in a while due to stuff IRL, so I've been making a list and a folder of stuff he might like to use and/or check out when he is able to do so. He'll be blown away by this!

Beautiful city and CJ,  one of the most realistic suburbs I've ever seen, (antigrid use of streets is so natural and fluent) and these highways, wow!...some shosts about the entire urban area in the future..?*:)  it would be awesome! Tom

Really nice demonstration of grid-breaking prowess! I also thought the roundabout/split turned out really neat--glad you stumbled upon it :D

Awesome work. Beautiful placement of roads, mmps, and of course, you take grid busting to the next level. Amazing scenes like yours are what I had in mind with that FAR-3 pack of civics a few years ago. Plus, I love that split road - absolutely brilliant! *:thumb:

Thanks a lot for your comment! The fence comes from chrisadams3997's RRP wooden fences which are very versatile.

That's great to hear! Though it takes hours building like this and it's not very natural since nearly all of the residential buildings are plopped in to ensure endless rows of diagonal housing.

Thanks for that! Unfortunately once I finish a city tile that is that! There is nothing more to add and it is one to the next one.

Finally, thanks to the new buildings, got SC4 to the level of Cities: Skylines. Here is to MOAR diagonal and FAR buildings!

Make that tens of hours, each area was a puzzle to get right and the hardest areas were of course the FAR areas and working out to blend in those angles with diagonal buildings and the fillers available.

I didn't even expect the NAM to be capable of it, but I then realised that incompletely dragged out section of FAR leaves a road stub, I few clicks later I had a roundabout, from there I decided to switch from FA-2 to FA-3 to maximize the different angles.

This entry wouldn't have been possible without those FAR buildings, so thanks for that Matt! I knew there weren't enough buildings so that's when I stumbled across another idea: using diagonal houses to slot into FA-2 and FA-3 roads, it's not the perfect solution but it at least allows for FAR residential scenes. I am aware that C.P. has his own FAR housing set but these have not been published yet.

A scenic and sophisticated city!
Surrounded by beautiful greenery, it is frighteningly quiet and quaint.
I would love to live in a city like this.

Very nice! I admire your grid-busting ways, I haven't had much courage in doing so myself (but I can always use the excuse that I'm a product of my almost-everywhere grid existence here in New York City, haha), but the more people share shots like these, the more I throw a diagonal in my SC4 creations! : )

Thanks for that! It wouldn't be quiet though due to the motorway and the main roads running out of the city, but it will still look beautiful.

I managed to match up the trees used in the houses with the trees in the ARDEN tree controller, thus overall there is a constant theme in the trees. Previously the trees would not match up but this time they do.

Laying out the grid-busting network is reasonably quick, but adding in the diagonal buildings and FAR buildings (along with all the fillers, back alleys and car parks) takes up many hours!

Very good grid-busting here.  Some of my favorite parts of this style of building continue to be the fillers, be they parks or parking.  The fillers you've chosen give me the feeling that everything is cohesive and working well together.  Nice update!

Thanks for that! It took me years to find a group of fillers which would blend together, but you are right, choose the fillers well and watch this game come to life!
