I would think that Baltimore vs Washinton would be larger, since they are even sometimes considered to be in the same metro area.

A few to note in my local area.

Going West-East:

Dubbo v Orange

Orange v Bathurst

Bathurst v Lithgow

All those cities have populations of around 30,000 people, and the are all on the Great Western Highway which goes from Sydney to Adelaide and onto Perth I do beleive.

Bathurst is 30 minutes drive from both Orange and Lithgow. It seems that many of the Orange schools are in direct competition with the Bathurst schools, and Lithgow is the butt of many jokes here.

Each city has something of importance except Orange, which has to rely on business from the highway which it directs stright through the middle of the town (and its a $%&^! of a road to drive on). Lithgow has a major jail, Bathurst has Mount Panorama, and Dubbo is built right on the crossroads of two major highways connecting Sydney to the west, and Melbourne to Brisbane.

(Guess where I live 3.gif)

Dundalk v. Drogheda - Trying to be County Louth's largest (and best town).

Dundalk v. Newry - Trying to be the best "border town", well, Newry is a city.

All towns have populations around 30,000.

Saint John, New Brunswick v. Moncton, New Brunswick. Saint John has long been the largest city in the province, however with many changes in the 1990's Saint John began to decline in population and with many new government funded projects Moncton began to grow, and fast. Many saint johner's are bitter as the premier of the province is from moncton and it has seemed that most of the funding for cities has gone to moncton. Examples - 1. new highway constructed between Fredericton (the provincial capital) and moncton, but they wont even consider uprading the highway from fredericton to saint john which is one of the most dangerous sections of road in the province. 2. A tourism map was produced which left Saint John, the provinces' largest city, off of the map but included moncton. 3. Saint John has waited 20 years for funding for harbour cleanup and basic sewage infrastructure, an 80 million dollar project, while moncton recently decided to build a stadium to host the world track and field championships. Government officals made an announcement one day saying that harbour cleanup is not a priority but gave Saint John 2 million dollars for the project. Later that day they went to moncton and announced upwards of 13 million dollars for the stadium, only weeks after the proposal for the stadium was made.

This year moncton officially overtook saint john as the largest metropolitan area in the province. So the bitterness between the 2 cities continues.

I don't know how Philly feels about Tampa, but down here, we hate Philly.

There always seem to be an important battle in Football and Hockey vs Philly.

In a closer rivalry, Orlando and Tampa.

Tampa is a bonified REAL city. Built because of the rail road and ports. ORLANDO is a tourist city, and is much newer with not quite so much heritage as Tampa.

Tampa has Ybor, Hyde Park and Tampa itself, Orlando has Disney.

We Tampans also hate the Orlando AFL Team.

They beat us this time >_<

University of South Florida(tampa) hates University of Central Florida (Orlando) too.

Sunderland isn't as bad as people think. Its got its problems, the design of the 'modern' 1950s city centre being one of them - but it also has some beautiful countryside nearby, miles of beaches and attractive districts like Ashbrooke.

It also hosts an international Airshow, has an office of Nike UK and is home to the newly built 49,000 cappacity(all seated) Stadium of light.

Things are looking up as Sunderland will shortly have a direct train link to London.

If it hasn't been said already Barcelona vs. Madrid. My dad has a friend from Madrid who insists that there is no Barcelona. That has go to be one of the biggest rivalries between two cities ever, I mean they speak a diffrent language, are fearcly proad og their respective cultures and to top it off they used to be diffrent countries!

Petriknl, i'm dutch as well. What about Arnhem and Nijmegen? They're both in Gelderland (a province) and Nijmegen wanted to be the capital of that province, but Arnhem got the title. That's 1 reason. The 2nd: FOOTBALL (or soccer, however you want to call it). Vitesse (Arnhem) vs. NEC (nijmegen).

Meastro444: I'm also proud to be Dutch!! Dutch rule!! Whoohoo!

Las Vegas and Reno but Las Vegas would destroy Reno. Renos really geolous of Las Vegas and the fact that Las Vegas got alot bigger than it. They are definetly rivals because both legalized gambling. but Las Vegas has the biggest best casinos and Reno has small junky ones.

Actually, after living in Washington for 20 years, I'm always surprised at how low key the Baltimore-Washington rivalry is. You hear the occasional "Baltimoron" joke here or there, but that's about it.

There really isn't any rivalry between Toronto and New York... heck, we don't even hate New York's hockey teams (sure, we fdo a bit, just because they aren't the Maple Leafs, but it's like that for everyone).

Heh. Yeah, very old rivalry that one. Been going for at least the better part of 100 years. I've always wanted to visit Melbourne though. It looks like a nice place.

For those that don't know, this rivalry resulted in the creation of a city.

The two cities both wanted to be capital. Both were about the same size at the time (they're still relatively close, actually). The pollies couldn't choose which one, so they decided to plonk a city in between the two (though closer to Sydney). Melbourne temporarily held parliament

i just though of one thats pretty funny. on another site i go that has to do with architecture/urban planning, there always seems to someone starting an arguement about Houston vs Atlanta.

ugh. it gets annoying. the 2 things that atlanta is better at is that it has a true rapid transit system and also has quite a bit of those fancy TOD projects everyone loves so much.

but if you look at the big picture both are pretty much the same. Houston has a much bigger blue collar base to back up its big companies(atl is all big business and nothing else), its much more diverse with people and cultures from all over the world(its a bit like LA and not like NYC in that respect).

Also people look at atlanta being this huge center of Rap music, but the truth is that the rap scene in houston is just as huge and vibrant, it just hasnt been commercialized like atl.

The only that ticks me off is how atlanta got MARTA back in the late 70's early 80's when the government was doing what i call the "limited time offer subway system giveaway" and houston coulda got on board with that too, but at the time the city government was controlled by oil tycoons and suburban developers who wouldnt let anything like that by.

and it doesnt help that atlanta is this mega tv production hub. NY and Hollywood may have all the big starts but atl is where all the cable channels come from.

Personally i think both are equally nice places and its stupid to argue over each of them, because neither is perfect.

The biggest rivalry in Ireland is between the two cities of Galway and Limerick. this is because galway people think its bigger then limerick with there 65000 but really limerick has a greater  population of just over 100,000, limerick is restricted to just 54000 because of its tiny city boundary which hasent been moved since 1950! and as a result galway is now statistically the third biggest city in Ireland with 65000 and limerick is the fourth with excess of 100,000! also if anyone has ever seen or been to the two cities then they would know which is bigger. all this just touches the surface of the rivalry of the two irish cities.

wright back to this because im curious to see peoples comments.

This is similar to the situation in American cities. Boston, with a metro pop of about 5,000,000, actually has a city pop smaller than cities like Austin, TX, which have most of their populations within massive city limits. Boston only contains about 550,000 in its small boundaries, even with many annexations in the 1800s.

I can't say that this inspires unfriendly rivalries, but it does get on some Bostonians' nerves when we are referred to as a "medium-sized" metropolis, while cities like San Antonio suddenly rank near the top.

I'm wondering what most of these rivalries are based on...sports, or political issues?

The biggest rivalry in the Netherlands is Rotterdam vs Amsterdam. Some people think it's only football related, but it's more than that. It's the arrogant capital vs the hard-working second city. If you are born and grew up in Rotterdam, like me, you almost instantly hate Amsterdam. Why? Because the media and a lot of people are so orientated on Amsterdam. And if I tell people abroad that I'm from the Netherlands, they immediately ask: 'Amsterdam?'. Well.. we 'Rotterdammers' don't like that2.gif

I think the rivalry is bigger in Rotterdam (against Amsterdam)

I do not know too much of big-city rivalries, but around my area (southern Louisiana) we have towns that have huge rivalries, but mostly because of football. On the night before a huge rivalry game it is not uncommon for the opposing team to graffitti and vandalize the other team's school. Sometimes they even get a hold of other player's adresses and break their windows.

There are also a few economical rivalries like the one between my town of Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville, which began when Union Pacific built a railroad through Breaux Bridge and bypassed St. Martinville. Breaux Bridge boomed because of this and was approaching St. Martinville's population while the St. Martinville economy stagnated.

Then I-10 was built through Breaux Bridge and that was the thing that really made St. Martinville mad. Restaurants, shopping centers and gas stations were built all near the interstate, drawing tourists in to go to historical downtown Breaux Bridge which is completely congested on Saturadays because of the people walking around downtown. Now in St. Martinville, all these beautiful historical buildings are abandoned except for one which has a Subway restaurant in it. So for the time being, BB is growing at a fast rate now (I think it's the second fastest growing town in the state) and the huge Fruit of the Loom plant in St. Martinville has been shut down which created huge unemployment rates and with nowhere to work in SM, some people moved to BB and now work near the interstate. So I guess we won the rivalry.
