Houston vs Dallas, of course.

Dallas is viewed as more "cultured" while Houston actually has a larger cultural scene (museum district, theatre district, etc)

Dallas is viewed as a more upscale shopping mecca, even though the Houston Galleria is larger than the Dallas Galleria, and is far more prestigious.

Dallas has many new "urban" projects coming(Victory, uptown), but so does Houston. (Pavilions, etc) Dallas just got the boom first, in terms of these new developments. Houston, however, seems to have more "unique old urban villages", such as Montrose, West U, etc. Dallas has some, too. Both, however, are both infused with tons of unbridled suburban sprawl.

Houston is a bigger city, but, the DFWA metro is bigger than the HSLBT metro.

DART rail is better/larger than MetroRail, but Houston Metro has a far superior bus/park and ride service. Plus, the Houston choo choos look better! 3.gif

Both cities suffer from bad traffic.

Both cities are soo much alike, yet so much apart. This really does nothing but add fuel to this rivalry.

Both thumb their noses at little hippie college town Austin, though 3.gif

SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

I know I gave up my right of being a Natural Born NY'er to comment on this one by moving to Mississippi...but I will anyway....

By vurtue of reality, the Jets cant really be consided a "NY team" sense the stadium they play in is accually in NJ.

and they can hav'em 4.gif

there are a few down here.... there seems to be a pretty big rivalry between MS & LA

in football its MSU and LSU

and MS being a "red" state and LA being a "blue" state

this rivalry has even extended to relief (or lack of) after hericane Katrina

LA stating that MS has gotten more money to rebuild because of the political buddy system, race, and other considerations

MS stating that they got more because they were harder hit...being that the storm accually hit MS, NO's damage was greater due mostly to their lack of planning and corruption

The good thing about being a yankee in down here.....I can say.." I aint any part of this...I'm from NY"  4.gif

Mexico City Vs Guadalajara Vs Monterrey.

Mexico City its the Global image and business centre of mexico (but also a heavy paper as HQ centre for international companies operating in Latinamerica).

Guadalajara (4 million hab) have a very low rise, very liveable city, but wages are lower than Mexico City or Monterrey, while living its relative cheap (and beer amazingly cheap and widespread), but it holds the Mexican Sillicon Valley (design and production centre for electronic goods and pieces).

Monterrey (3 million hab) very linked to US, the third largest mexican city, but the second in economic output, with a very industrial tradition, very centered in heavy industry.

as the 3 cities are faw between them, theres a lot or rivalries, in many fields, but the 3 are have their very economic function and structure.

Spokane vs. Seattle is a big one. Seattle's streets are generally well kept due to heavy state and federal funding while Spokanes are eroding away quickly due to lack of outside funds. There is also a bit of a "red" vs. "blue" battle between the cities as the West Side is primarily Democratic and the Eastern side is primarily Republican. King County is big enough that what gets voted on their generally ends up being what passes. Spokane, while the biggest city east of the Cascades, just doesn't have the votes to sway legislation in it's favor. We've been at loggerheads for several decades over just about everything from businesses to funding. A new rivalry lately also has been the City of Spokane and the newly formed City of Spokane Valley. In 2003, the eastern half of Spokane voted to split from Spokane and form it's own government, calling it's self Spokane Valley just to make things more confusing.

i think the north and the south has always been a big thing. northerners look at southerners like they are hicks. when really southerners are more polite and more likely to help you out. like in NYC you have to pay someone to hold a door open for you, and in the south we help each other out

and earlier said something about Nashville and Memphis. I believe that nashville is the better of the 2. the high rises of Nashville just look better and nashville [my opinion] has more culture because it is behind LA as the music capital of the world. and Nashville is just more fun to visit. i have been to both cities and that is just my opinion.

  • That is so true dude.  Dallas and Fort Worth pretty much share everything. People go back and forth, but they cant agree with anything, especially not this Wright Ammendment stuff.

But my opinion is that austin is better than those two...

sorry i used your post haux, but the template fitsquote>

As a fellow Texan, I'd take San Anotonio over Austin any day. Austin is great if you're a college student who likes live music and lots of bars, but for just about everyting else, San Antonio is a much better place to live in my opinion.quote>

Except for the heat, living in Austin isn't even like living in Texas.  And that's a VERY good thing.  We're an island of sanity and all around good living.  In Austin there are parks everywhere, and bars that have NOTHING to do with the University of Texas.  It's a beautiful city filled with interesting people.

That said, it's not nearly big enough to compete with Dallas or Houston in any kind of rivalry.  It'll be a long time before we have a major pro sports team or something like the Dallas Symphony.  Even though Austin is growing (six or seven hundered thousand people now, I think), it doesn't seem like a big city.  The only other place in Texas it could possibly be compared to is Fort Worth, but FW is part of the whole Dallas/Fort Worth mess so it doesn't really stand on its own.  Because of the megalopolis surrounding it, it has more "big city" problems.

Rivalry between cities is always something that will go on. After all, without rivalry between countries and countries, many a thing would not be here. ex: Look at the rivalry between England and America, and how it caused america to be america.

Just like rivalry between countries, rivalry between cities also exists, after all, cities soak up demand, but want to soak as much of it up as possible. ex: Boston wants to soak up demand that new york is soaking up. See what I mean, it really doesn't have anything to do with cities not liking each other, it has to do with demand and desirability.

"Los Angeles is a Lovely place. On a day when the fog clears, you can see the smog."

Los Angeles also is a traffic nightmare due to the unusually large number of cars per people.

Plus, Hollywood is in Los Angeles, and I, for one, am not a fan of Holly wood.

If you're going to try and declare a "winner" in a pairing, you must actually argue your point and not just say "Los Angeles of Course". That makes you look like an elitist jerk, who acts ike he doesn't need to explain his opinions because they are the obvious opinions and no other opinions are valid just because he said so.

---------------------------------------------------

New York Vs Boston isn't really the actual rivalry, but most baseball fans from either city like to portray it that way. The reality is that in both Boston and New York who don't care about baseball and aren't part of the rivalry. Thus, the rivalry is more properly stated as "New York Yankees Vs Boston Red Sox".

Both sides have come up with ways of teasing or insulting the other, though (the following opinion is probably biased) it would seem that the Yankee fans have been a lot more creative and versatile with it. Prior to 2004, two very common T-shirt designs from boston were "What Curse?" and "Bambino can shove it up his ass". Since 2004, however, these t-shirts are outdated. Instead, Red Sox fans are sure to flaunt just pain memorabilia in general, particularly "2004 world series champions" shirts. Recently, there have been caps which display a subtle modification of the 'NY' yankees logo so that the N looks like an H amd it thus reads 'YH', short for "Yankee Hater". The trouble with this is that it's a bit too subtle. A coupe weeks ago there was a gathering in one of the lounges to watch the Yankes/Red Sox game. There was this really bratty annoying girl there wearing one of these (Imagine as extremely stereotypical a boston accent as you can, then apply it to a 19 year old with a really bitchy personality and you'll get this girl). Everyone waking into the room said "Oh, you're a yankee fan?", and she kept having to correct them. Every time this hapenned, I made sure to inform her of how useless such a hat was in New York since everyone would mistake it for a yankee hat. Eventualy, she just got fed up and left, though I don't know whether it was from her getting sick of people mistaking it for a yaknee hat, or from me constantly shoving that fact in her face. Likely it was some combination of the two.

On the yankee side of things, there was for a while just the generic but classic "Boston Sucks" T-shirt. However, a huge spawn of new material started showing up  after 2004. Reportedly, the day after Pedro Martinez's "The Yankees are my daddy" comment, there was a guy by Yankee Stadium seling t-shitst with the yankee logo that said "Pedro's Daddies". I have seen such shirts, so they do exist. Another popular one showed the red sox logo ith six world series rings under it next to the yakees logo with 26 world series righs under it. Under all that it said "Got rings?" Though, one relatively recent one which I absolutely love (I even bought the t-shirt) says "What Curse? You just sucked for 86 years" I was wearing it during the aforementioned viewing of the Yankees-Red Sox Game (and there were a couple of other Red Sox Fans there, one of whom was an RA), and I suspect it may have helped aggrivate the situation (which was of course the desired effect). Though, the fighting stayed completely verbal, even after the RA left. No one even flipped anyone else the bird (though the language got quite coarse at times). We'll have to do better next time.3.gif

Looking back at the Portsmouth and Southampton rivalry, Southampton built a Huge Shopping Centre, so Portsmouth built one with a big tower easilly visable from Southampton just to stick it to thje Sotoners.

The funny thing is when the Saints (Southampton Football Club) built their new stadium, they made the mistake of hiring a Portsmouth Company, oh dear. So the pompodian builders decide to play with the bricks, they wrote PFC (abbreviation of Portsmouth Football Club) in a differant kind of brick on one of the walls so when it rains in Southampton, a big PFC appears on the wall of the stadium lol.

The rivalry between the two cities is so amazing there is even a designated Holy Divide! The River Hamble has been nicknamed the divide by the locals and has become the border of the two cities districts.

More recently for another point for the Pompodians, around the world boat race started from Portsmouth!

For the Sotoners, the local airport (eastliegh) has been renamed Southampton International!

For the Pompodians, Pompey (Portsmouth Football Club) are in the top league while Saints are below.

For the Sotoners, Southampton has been named one of the best shopping cities in the UK.

For the Pompodians, Portsmouth recently completed the UKs tallest building outside of London.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Oxford vs Cambridge. Their rivalry dates back almost 700 years, and has frequently been violent.

Cambridge Uni. was set up by disgruntled students from Oxford.

After Cranmer, Latimer and Ridley were burned, it was said "Cambridge produces martyrs; Oxford burns them".

Oxford was Royalist in the Civil War - Cambridge went with Cromwell.

To Oxford, Cambridge is:

- Cold

- Small

- Bleak

- Haughty

- Not as old as Oxford

- Not as beautiful as Oxford

- Far past its prime as a university.

To Cambridge, Oxford is:

- arrogant and lazy

- crowded and dirty

- expensive

- in decline

- Not as distinguished as Cambridge

- Not as beautiful as Cambridge

- Far past its prime as a university.

However, because of the internal rivalries between the townsfolk and the universities, there is occasionally inverted competition - Oxford townsmen supporting Cmabridge in the boat race, for instance.

I feel qualified to expound on this because I grew up in Oxford but studied in Cambridge, and love both cities! 9.gif

Toronto against every other city in Canda, all cities hate Toronto because Canada revolves around Toronto, if anything happens in Canada it happens in Toronto first, Toronto is the bussiness capital of Canada, and is the only city to have to have a national team in ecery sport, also they will posibly be the only city to have a CFL (Canadian Football League) and a NFL team, no other city in Canada will ever hve this.  Basicly this rivalry was started because of jealousy  towards Toronto, because Toronto has everything any other Canadian city has and more!

Rivalisation between cities is something that will always be. I think it's good as it stimulates development, danger is that it can easily turn to hate. And it's also important for cities to be able to cooperate.

In Poland, where I live, there is one big rivalry - between Krakow and Warsaw.

Krakow, former capital of Poland, still has a title of Royal Capital City Krakow. That's because it has never been canceled. And people still feel like they live in a royal city - and they are very proud of it. Also Krakow is still biggest cultural center of Poland. Now it is also developing very fast in economical terms. It has probably the highest educated work force in Poland.

As to Warsaw - it's still economical center of Poland, with many businesses having their headquarters there. But this is a city that isn't liked too much in any part of Poland. That's because, especially in communist times, governments carried only about this city, using the rest of country to help developing the capital...

Also many low-educated, lower-class people come to Warsaw seeking for possibilities, which has dramatically changed it's social structure in time.

Pittsburgh vs Cleveland.

I think it's because our two cities are so much alike...both founded on industry, strong eastern european population, big football fans...only Pittsburgh is CELARLY better, as it is much more beautiful and the Steelers have one the Super Bowl 5 times, compared to Cleveland's 0. :-D

Medicine Hat vs. Lethbridge

Medicine Hat thinks Lethbridge is:

-Too urban

-Busy

-Smartzie

-Ugly

-Socialistic

Lethbridge thinks Medicine Hat is:

.......................?

I guess peeps in Medicine Hat hate us for no reason. The size difference in both cities puts Medicine Hat kinda out of its league though.
