Some city rivalries in England is formed from football rivalry. Manchester and Liverpool is a notable one, having the two most successful teams in England.
Manchester and Leeds have a rivalry that goes back to the Wars of the Roses (between the Houses of Lancaster and York). Their football teams also had violent clashes back when football hooliganism was at it's height.
Southampton and Portsmouth are big rivals as mentioned.
Newcastle and Sunderland, again of football, despite being only 10 miles apart.

Others include:
Oxford and Cambridge, obvious because of their universities.
Leeds and Sheffield, Yorkshire rivalry.
Manchester and Birmingham, slight rivalry for the title of second city.

And of course no other city in England want to challenge London. 3.gif

Football wise..... DALLAS vs. PHILLY

Cowgirls vs. Eagles

It all started in the late 70s when the Cowboys disrespected

the Eagles. That hate still exists today. In old Veterans Stadium (Philly)

there was a court because there were so many fights between fans.

Little kids only know about 6 words, in Philly DALLAS SUCKS is two of them.

EAGLES!!!

Go head Sixers

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

And Phillies

Minneapolis - St. Paul used to have a very bitter rivalry.

Around the turn of the century (the 20th that is), the two cities entered a period of heightened contest. Both cities were booming population centers (both roughly just 5 decades old) and were experiencing influxes of immigrants (which only exacerbated the rivalry). This contest has resulted in much duplication. Both cities boast campuses for the University of Minnesota (but Minneapolis won this one). St. Paul was the first to build an ostentatious cathedral with Minneapolis to follow with its basilica (I think St. Paul won this one). Both cities even had a "Minnesota STATE Fair"... yea... two state fairs :\, this one ended in a tie by putting it in Falcon Heights (straddled between the two downtowns roughly). Both had minor league teams that HATED each other and periodically erupted into violence. The Cities even had an argument over Daylight savings time and Minneapolis was for several weeks one hour AHEAD of St. Paul (despite being further west). Businesses were often limited to serving just one city as they were often not allowed or shunned by the other city. Additionally, both cities fought hard in the theater industry and both have world renowned theaters (the Guthrie and others in Minneapolis and the Fitzgerald, Ordway and others). Now the Metro area has the second highest theater sales per capita (next to unbeatable New York).

Thank God THOSE days are over. Now the Cities work together for everything (even a 2020 Olympic Bid).

Now-a-days, Minneapolis-St. Paul tends to compare themselves to Denver and Seattle (both very demographically close and hubs of information technology, education, and banking). This has only intensified in the NHL and even in politics where Denver is hosting the Democratic National Convention and the Twin Cities are hosting the Republican National Convention (s). As to the additional S, ask Ron Paul and his near 10,000 supporters who are snubbing the real convention to have one in Minneapolis. Perhaps the M-SP rivalry ISN'T quite dead.

In Belgium:

Antwerp vs. Ghent

Ghent vs. Bruges

All three are beautiful old medieval cities dating from the time when Flanders was the economic hotspot of Europe. So they all claim a symbolic title of "capital" (which they all deserve, depending on how far back you want to go in history). Because Antwerp is the largest city today and economically most important because of its port, citizens of Antwerp are seen as "arrogant" by the others.

Oh, and Brussels vs. Paris.

Brussels is actually the second largest French-speaking city in Europe after Paris (it's bigger than Lyon or Marseille). Brussels has almost everything copied from Paris: the architecture, the "avenues",... The World Expo gave Paris its Eiffel Tower, so Brussels decided they would have a World Expo as well and built the Atomium (which must be one of the silliest monuments in Europe, but that's just my opinion).

Luckily, you can still eat "French fries" in Brussels, although Belgian people will insist that French fries were really invented in their country. Hahaha. 4.gif

It is a one way rivality, because Paris does not really care of Brussels.

Paris is a way bigger.

As it was already sayid, in Europe I think that the worst or best rivality is Parius vs London, two cities with the same size, two global cities.

Of course these are the capitals and biggest cities of the worst or best rivality between countries in Europe (France vs U.K)
