Great info on the power shed. I have really been looking for something like this. What I had in mind was more of a transfer or sub station. There aren't alot of people around where I live who even know where our power comes from. We have 2 hydro dams, 23 miles and 32 miles away and a nuclear plant about 100 miles away. And I don't like the way neighbor deals are handled. So...that shed is on my shopping list.

More great posts, I really like the detail you provide in your responses. Your CJ is a tutorial of sorts 4.gif

It looks like the next update is still a few days out, as RL is beating on the door today and tomorrow.

So, I've come up with a sort of "in-between" posting theme that I'll use when this is the case.  It will just be a few pictures of something that worked particularly well during recent SC4 3RR play.  Or not (yes, there have been disasters, too- no dirty laundry hid in this CJ).

I'll call it what it is:

    ...drum roll, please...

    "Shameless Eye Candy"

And, without further adieu, here's SEC No. 1.

The 3RR heliputer was out flying over the Cold Lake township the other day and happened across Little Cold Lake, which is all that has been terraformed in the township so far after the basic road and rail network was put down.

    #1
    coldlakelittlecoldlake01di8.jpg

It appears to be a "surface water" lake.  The 'puter flew in for a closer look.

Yes, no doubt.  brtim2's "Edmonton" Surface Water.  Dropping a little lower...

    #3
    coldlakelittlecoldlake0867050eerw5.jpg

We would guess that the bridge was created using the Rain Mod technique (of which more later in an update).  We then flew off over the eastern end of the lake.

And that's all for today, folks.  Thanks for stopping by.

    This continues to look fantastic.

Your use of the rain tool has inspired me to revisit it. I downloaded and installed it, but have yet to actually use it due to the limitations with it.

Some of the best tutorials on ST are not in the Omnibus but buried in the CJ section! Please continue to include them in your CJ. Also, don't be afraid to submit them to the Omnibus as well.

I suggested supplying links because this seems to be what others do on ST... I really have no preference one way or the other.

I have a friend who is from Fairbanks, but that's not really very close to Anchorage.

    Beautiful eye-candy shots David.

I've never tried my hands on that surface water. But I always wondered how these bridges can be made. Now that hint with the rain mod gives me quite an idea... of course. Great job with the landscape design once again. The lake looks amazing and your use of trees and Goldiva rocks add a lot of realism.

I'm looking forward to your next update.

Started downloading those farms yesterday; 6 or so MB of stuff and I still need to go out and search for some dependencies... the STEX has not been nice to me recently.

Good work, though on this "update".

Excellent updates! You've posted beautiful pictures, and I like that you've made some steps to make "referring back" to updates and pictures really easy. I think it's also great that you are so thorough on listing your mods, giving credit to the folks that have contributed to the STEX, and walking folks through tutorial-like how-to sessions. You're adding to my benchmark list of "things that make a great CJ great" with every update! Wow!

Number one, great Eye Candy. Simply astonishing.

Secondly, my id (rw0381c) is nothing military. It's actually quite simple to me. r = the first letter of my name; w = the first letter of my last name; 03 = my birth month; 81 = my birth year; and finally c. "c" is a longer story, I got tired of receiving junk mail from all the places I sign up to, so I chose the letter "c" to add to my id, and created an e-mail account to match.

Sorry for boring all your readers, and yourself with that.

Now that that's out of the way. I NEED that bridge height mod, but the modds section isn't up yet. Can anybody assist with that?

As my participation in ST has been more sporadic recently, I been missing a lot of great new CJ's, this being one of those. Other than the very informative presentations, the views of the region are quite picturesque. I was interested by the farm layout stuff as well, because where I live in central Pennsylvania, the farms are quite irregular, not necessary parcelled in any set manner, and often need to conform to the contours of the landscape.

3RR is proud to the beginning of a series of posts called "We've got mail..."  We think the purpose is self-explanatory, and proceeds along the same line of "truth-in-packaging" as "Shameless Eye Candy," which, judging by your response, has been a rousing success.

What we'll do in "We've got mail..." is go over the comments that folks have left since the last time around.  3RR is running, less my own posts, at about a 1 in 20 rate (5%) of comments to total views.

    3rrindexline0121107f2jf2.png

Given that we've been "on the air" for about 10 days now, and again backing out my own page views, that means 3RR has about 125 people who take a look every day (or likely somewhat less, as some folks may be looking more than once- you know who you are...).  So, based on the results of this entirely unscientific calculation, we estimate about 10 messages will accumulate every couple of days or so ("couple" and "or so" are terms of art used in many professions to indicate a complete lack of specific information about something- you'll see them here pretty frequently).

Given that my responses to some comments have become as long as some updates, we'll plan to run "We've got mail..." every three or four days or so (see...told you you'd see it again), and see what happens.  As always, your feedback as to what could be improved here at 3RR is greatly appreciated (and, of course, it's always nice to hear when something is working as well)

A final general note.  A 1 in 20 comment to view ratio appears to be pretty much the average for CJs that last beyond the first one or two pages (3RR crossed the line onto the third page, btw, with Larsz' post this past Monday, the 21st- thanks, Larsz, great to have you here!).  That leaves, though, 19 of 20 (or 18 of 20, or 15 of 20; somewhere around there) folks who are coming by and leaving without a word.

Am I complaining?  Absolutely not, because that describes what I did here on the CJ Forum for almost two years.  I learned a lot as a "lurker" during that time, and I hope that this shows up in the quality of 3RR.  I will say this, though.  Once I started commenting, I almost immediately felt much more a part of the ST community.  Most CJers observe MrCinatit's very wise advice, given in the Guide To Creating A City Journal thread that is "pinned" at the top of the CJ index page

Respect your readers. Yes, you will get the occasional stupid comment. Some comments are downright insulting. Try to be patient. Do not ridicule your readers - again, an easy way to lose an audience. Make an attempt to reply every person who has replied to your journal - it is common courtesy, and can personalize your journal.quote>

At 3RR, we will work as hard as we can to respect you, the reader.  If we don't know that you're out there, though, we can only respect you in the abstract.  So, hey, go ahead comment, if only to say hi.  Don't worry about making some substantive point in every post.  In a sense, a CJ offers something akin to a guestbook, and we'd be proud to have your 'lectronic sig in ours.  That same advice, btw, is across the board.  CJs are a labor of love- nobody does this for money.  I can't BAT, modding baffles me and my lots...well, let's just not go there.  Through 3RR, I can give something to the community, along with the 100s (remember that the index has a page 2, page 3 and so on- just because a CJ has dropped down the list doesn't mean that it's not worthy of a visit) of other CJ creators out there.  The point- there's lots of worthy CJs that would like to have you comment there.  Commenting on four or five CJs at a sitting costs nothing but a few moments of your time- here's to hoping you spend freely.

    On to the mail...

PhilsCafe (https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=58638) Phil:  Thanks for your ongoing comments.  I hope that this CJ will become a way to get out the word on great, but obscure, BATs and lots like mrbisonm's Village Battery.

I'll take your opinion as to not minding the intermingling of mini-tutorials with other content in 3RR as a vote in the "keep-'em-here" column.  So far it's "keep-'em-here" 1, Omnibus 0.

I also prefer more irregular farms thoughquote>

So where'dya grow up, Phil?  I bet it wasn't Iowa or Kansas (they're a long way from beautiful Lucerne, Switzerland, in any event).  Wasn't it Buckaroo Banzai who said, "Wherever you go- there you are."?  I'd add, "wherever you're from- that's where you're at."  Your reference to "pylons," btb, takes me back 30 years to when I lived in Germany for a few years, where things we call towers in the U.S. are generally referred to as pylons ("power pylon") or masts ("radio transmitter mast").

    Always great...

Larsz:  As noted above, first comment on page 3 of this CJ.  We've arrived!  You helped!  Thanks.

See my remarks to Phil above about the Village Battery.  It's really a worthwhile plugin, as are so many of the other things that MrB has done over the years.

I really like the detail you provide in your responses. Your CJ is a tutorial of sorts.quote>

    "keep-'em-here" 2, Omnibus 0.

Appreciate very much you coming back by...

Fabiocb (https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=74412&enterthread=y) Fabio:  Always great to see your comments.  Is that eye thing clearing up at all?  Looking forward to stopping by https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=74412&enterthread=y later today to catch up.

tchaos713  Daniel:  Your second visit.  Really kind words- thanks.

Before I take up the rest of your comment, I'll note my connection with Louisville.  It goes back to the 60s- my uncle Ted Steffen was a surgeon there specializing in the ear.  He live in the "800" building downtown, and I remeber visiting there about once a year from my home in the Chicago area.  I then attended U ok K in Lexington for several years, and was in Louisville fairly often during that time.  I've watched Louisville from afar since- I see that they're rebuilding "Spaghetti Junction" (the massive I-65 and 64 interchange right downtown)- I was there when it was getting built the first time.  It looks like the I-265 bridge across the Ohio River east of town is finally going to get built- 30 years after it should have been.

Keep us posted on how "Giselle" goes.

As far as God mode Rain is concerned, I have a working discussion outlined that addresses what it can and can't do, and how I use it.  Once I get started dealing with specific mods, it should come along pretty quick- maybe in the next month or so.

Some of the best tutorials on ST are not in the Omnibus but buried in the CJ section! Please continue to include them in your CJ. Also, don't be afraid to submit them to the Omnibus as well.quote>

    "keep-'em-here" 3, Omnibus 0...

    ...oh, wait a minute...

On further consideration of your comment by the scoring judges, we're awarding a point to the Omnibus, too

    "keep-'em-here" 3, Omnibus 1.

I'll always do a link if I can when I specifically refer to something.  The current state of ST5.0 makes that difficult.

Fairbanks is, in Alaska terms, just down the road...I get up there every few years.  I hope you get a chance to visit Alaska someday, as it would seem you have several friends here.

PhilsCafe (https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=58638) Phil, hi again.  That's when I know I've let the mail languish...when I reply to two different comments made days apart from the same person.  You are too kind, and I'll be by https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=58638 again later today.

I really appreciate your words about hints.  Way too often I get into "here's exactly how to do that" mode, and for some folks I think that really sucks all the air out of the room.  I don't want to stifle anyone's creativity- you've pointed out the benefits (large) of sometimes taking a more subtle approach.  On the "Rain" mod, see my remarks to Daniel (tchaos713) above.

Again, your comments are really appreciated.

    ...continued later today.

Wasn't it Buckaroo Banzai who said, "Wherever you go- there you are."? quote>

This quote also appeared (as a tip of the hat, I'm sure) on the bridge dedication plaque of the U.S.S. Excelsior in Star Trek VI. The Star Trek production crews seem to have quite the sense of humor. For instance, in the original series, some pipes were labeled GNDN in order to inform the discerning crewperson that the pipe "Goes Nowhere Does Nothing."

Anyway, before I get too off topic...

For the first four years I lived in Louisville I lived not too far from the 800 Building, first on Ormsby Ave and then at the corner of 2nd and Magnolia. Hopefully the reconstruction of Spaghetti Junction will be completed soon, but I'm not really holding my breath... There has been an alternate plan presented that would eliminate I-64 between the Junction and 12th St or so. I-64 itself would be rerouted onto existing I-265 over the new bridge and into Indiana. Additionally, there are plans in motion to build an arena downtown to replace Freedom Hall and to build a new 60-story tower at 7th and Main to house a museum, UofL's Fine Arts Master's Program and a bevy of other businesses and condos. Louisville is indeed growing. I will keep you all posted on how Giselle goes!

I look forward to your discussion of the rain tool!

Hot damn, I love this CJ! The amount of reading material - the tutorials, anecdotes, and downright jabberwockying - is really amazing. And it's great how much attention you pay to the replies and question (many of my favorite CJer's hardly even acknowledge their readers). The mods list was excellent (I did a lot of downloading while reading that), and so was the overview of your plugin organization techniques (if only my plugins folder was so organized). And your cities are beautiful - I really liked that last update with the rain-mod lake, it looked great. Keep up the good work, I hope to follow this CJ closely.

    ...a few more...

pickled_pig (https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=70970) Hey, p_p:  Good luck with your download efforts.  I should have asked you to keep track, since you were doing sort of an "all-at-once" effort, to keep track of what files are involved and send me a full list.  On the other hand, given the difficulties with the STEX right now (you are not alone), that would have been a pretty presumptuous request.

Happy farming...I'll be by to check out the spring planting

Liger14:  And the Ernest Hemingway Memorial Award for Comment Brevity goes to...

No, no, no.  Welcome to 3RR, Liger14.  Look forward to you coming back soon, and thanks for the nice words.

shizu00:  Hey, Scott, thanks for coming back by!

I like that you've made some steps to make "referring back" to updates and pictures really easy.quote>

Thats my job, sir.  No, seriously...that's just the way that I conceive of a CJ.  Some folks use them to tell a story (and, as a frustrated author myself, I am envious), others use them to showcase design expertise, or just to let the world see work they are justifiably proud of.

Me, I just want to let you into the world I'm in when I boot up SC4.  No wars, no strife (well, maybe with the Sims over a freeway extension or a NIMBY use), no bureaucratic or judicial obstacles to what you might want to do on any given day.  A like-minded community of really, really nice people willing to spend inordinate amounts of their time to herd up, then rope and tie bits and bytes into amazing things and forms that others are then given free use of with no greater expectation than credit where credit is due.  I like that it's a world-wide community, too- so much opportunity to learn from the experiences of others.

Whoa, I waxeth on here overmuch...where were we?

    ...walking folks through tutorial-like how-to sessions.quote>

    That's "keep-'em-here" 4, Omnibus 1

Your closing words are high praise.  I'll do what I can to keep 3RR at that sort of level

p1:  Hi, thanks for letting me know that about 3RR's terrain.  Actually, though, credit in the main for the appearance my region, which is mostly flat with some local terraforming, should go, as I've said, to cycledogg and his amazing Columbus Mod.  More on my approach to terraforming and terrain very soon.

...I'll wrap the mail up next time.

Newbie here; I just feel I should comment because of how useful your CJ is.  I don't mean to knock any other CJ, but few of the ones I've seen go so far in explaining how they made what they did.  You've really gone the extra mile.

In addition, your city looks great; very real.  Whatever you're doing to "superdetail" your cities is really working well.

One question too; with the mods section of ST5.0 yet to open I'm having trouble identifying some of the mods you use.  Particularly the "Columbus" mod.  Could you explain what that is and what it does?

    3rrwgmsplash20c1d76qz6.jpg

    ...and the rest...

    -----------------------------------

Darmok (https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=59816&enterthread=y) Hey...Darmok, my friend.  You are going to wind up overdrawn at the superlatives bank.  I feel like I really need to add "...and if you really want to see amazing SC4 cityscaping, head on over to https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=59816&enterthread=y."

You've hit a point that I think is important:  Simplicity always rhymed with beauty!

I think that, in the world of SC4, that is often all too easily forgotten.  It's so easy to cram 20 really good BATs and lots off of the plugins shelf into a small area of a city and then stand back and pat yourself on the back for how great it looks (because it will and it does).  It is always a lot harder to pick that same small area and get just right those one or two added elements that make it look amazing.  Lots of times there's substantial work involved that never shows in the end result except that the end result snaps folks' heads around as it comes up on the monitor.

Am I talking about https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=59816&enterthread=y here?  Yes, and the really significant number of CJs out there today that aspire to comparable levels of quality content.

    -----------------------------------

Jacqulina (https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=61762&enterthread=y):  Uh-huh, yes...about a bazillion comments later in the two days your CJ has been back in view.  There's a lot of (well-deserved) enthusiasm for your work, jacqulina.  Your public awaits...it couldn't have happened to a more deserving person.

Absolutely marvelous self-effacing quote of the day:

...i loved looking at them again...quote>

Well, tons of folks quite apparently love looking at them with you.  Go, j...go!

    -----------------------------------

rw0831c:  So, Rheal, the question becomes...

...now that everyone on this Forum section has your bank account and computer password, what do you do?

Moving on, joerg's Bridge Height Mod.  Since the switch to ST5.0, the Modds & Downloads area has not been functional.  joerg, who I am not aware of as a current and active ST member (but I don't run the place and have no access to membership or access rolls and logs- I just haven't seen his name around for some time- his last upload to the STEX was the excellent Food4Less BAT in July, 2004), is apparently not available to provide the mod directly.  I gather, although I have never seen it wriiten down, that there is a policy that members of the ST community will not provide each other directly files that are available on ST.

The problem with that last is- I don't know how to get an answer.  I guess I could email Dirk (although I'd feel like Dorothy arriving at the Emerald City and asking for an audience with the Wizard..."Hello, I'm David, the meek and unworthy...")  My guess is, though, if anyone could fix whatever is up with the remaining broken parts of ST5.0, Dirk would, and asking him to allow something that there are very good general policy reasons against would not really be presenting a very fair question.  Do you want to ask him?

As an aside, shortly after I became a member pegasus got into a tiff with (I recollect) another SC website over some issue.  He pulled all his stuff off the STEX for at least six month and maybe longer.  Pretty much everyone honored his request not to privately provide his files, which was hard at the time on folks like me, who could only look at the work of others who had the fortune to have DLed those files before PEG left.  On the other hand, those files were (and remain) his work and while, if you already have them there is little that can be done to stop you from using them, passing them on to others is another thing entirely.  The whole system here works because this is a community of both shared interest and self-restraint.  Read Garrett Hardin's essay http://www.garretthardinsociety.org/articles/art_tragedy_of_the_commons.html and you'll better understand why things can go south at a place like ST really easily

I feel really crummy about this...the file is a whole 5Kb.  It could be easily sent.  Does anyone out there reading this have any insight into the problem?

Thanks for the great words, Rheal.  If it is possible to do anything, I will be the first to act.

    Actually, it's your third...

Thanks for the great comment this time around (your other comments were great, too!).  I'm going to make the need for more ploppable rocks a personal crusade...

I'll be watching for the successor CJ to https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=70716&enterthread=y.  Don't be too hard on yourself- your first effort was pretty darn good.

Hey, SimRico.  Thanks for bookmarking 3RR.  I've returned the favor and look forward to swapping ideas with you down the road.  We can also get together and unanimously beg bobbo662 for custom BATs we want.  I see great things ahead.

Dave:  Pennsylvania is my favorite state in the eastern U.S to drive across- it's picturesque and varied, but very settled.  I can't remember a boring mile ever spent there.  In another life I'm designing cross-country bicycle routes- I'll have to run my ideas as to the route through PA for the one from Eastport, ME to Westport, WA by you.

Anyway, your post turned me on to two great CJs I had missed.  They happen to be yours.  I'm assuming https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=63150&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear is currently inactive, but https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=58133&enterthread=y seems to be going (and growing) strong.  It certainly has an elite readership from the quick look I took.

Your words are high praise- I look forward to further explorations of the world of SC4 farming, and to your continued comments.

    -----------------------------------

I'll get to further comments after the next update, which is...COMING TO YOUR TOWN SOON ON A MONITOR NEAR YOU!  Thanks for stopping by...

EDIT:  (9/6/06)  Moved pics to ImageShack

Very nice attention to detail here. I like the fact you took time to lay rocks along some of your shore line. Great work.

Hehehe.... overdrawn at the superlatives bank.... 17.gif Yeah well... I do tend to be a tad verbose sometimes.... (you see I'm at it again...). But hey! what can I say, I can only quote that great modern philosopher, Popeye, who said so rightly "I am what I am!".
Now... speaking of superlatives you must go to the same bank I do! LOL
I thank you for your kind comments, and I'll even ask you a question that's bugging me since ST5 is online...
How for Pete's sake do you put a "Topic summary" in your case you wrote "A 'sandbox' region journal - new "We've got mail..." 3/23/06"?????
I've tried a lot of things and can't figure it out.... (I guess that even old dogs have to learn new tricks once in a while!)
your help would be very appreciated!
Enjoy your weekend, and can't wait to see more of your great CJ!

It dissappoints me greatly that I cannot get this mod until the site makes that section available.

I bet however, that it doesn't dissapoint me as much as my sims, who desperately want to get to the other side of my river. I'll let them suffer for a bit more, or maybe I could use the ferry.

I love how you try to give personal attention to every comment. It's just with all these comments, you're going to have a hard time actually progressing this CJ!

Hey, your region looks amazing, it is easy to tell you are an urban planner!  I really like your terraforming and your transportation system - they flow together very naturally.  I haven't been too fond of the darker highways until i saw your use of them, you make them look really good!  I can't believe i have missed this cj, it is excellent!

Iowa? Kansas? Yeah, they're really far away from Lucerne, Switzerland (I had the luck to actually grow up there, to answer your question 4.gif). And over here, everything's 'irregular'. That quote nails it - maybe I should borrow that film some time. I do look at the world through my 'Swiss-tinted' glasses... take my CJ for example.

About that old-fashioned 'pylon' reference, that's what my dictionnary got me for 'Hochspannungsmast' (does that sound familiar to you?). So you'll probably see more 'funny' translations here. But you'll get the idea...

    Take care David.

This is an incredible journal. I've only been playing a few months and am just now beginning to get an idea of what I want to do with the game. I'm now in the stage that I'm learning HOW to do what I want to do, and this CJ has already been supremely informative. I love that you describe how you go about things...that's very useful to us who have learned a lot in a short amount of time and have lots of knowlege gaps. Thanks a lot for sharing with us.
