Future of SimCity Official Discussion Thread
dussin23 replied to Compromise's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Um ... I have a region with 6 million sims so i think i know how to connect the cities. What I meant was that it would be nice to see parts of the other cities when you're playing so that you have an idea of what to build, where to make the precise connections... etc.quote> I've thought about that, too. Great idea, if I do say so myself. The part you can see that's outside of the current city's jurisdiction could be sort of grey looking, and of course not available to editing. At the very least you should be able to see where the other cities' borders are, but actually seeing the edges of those cities themselves, plus the borders, would be absolutely terriffic. I'd like to see them make a SimCity 4.5 that uses the same graphics but improves gameplay right out of the box. I just did a re-install of the game, and it's totally unplayable as brand-new. Then it should incorporate some of the changes discussed in this thread to give it new capabilities. There's so much custom content for SC4 that if the next version were backwards compatible I actually think it would help sales. -
I had a similar problem once. It was a Civiliztion II disk or something that wouldn't work on my computer under any circumstances. I took it back to the store and they got it to work with no problems. The one I exchanged it for did the same thing so I just gave up. I everything under the sun to get it to work, but it never would. Our problems differ in that I never even got the game to install. So I'd say that computers can do funny things sometimes.

Well, after a lengthy absence, I've finally decided to come back to SC4. I had a lot of technical problems and probably wouldn't have come back if not for this CJ sticking in my head. I'm doing a full-reinstall of the game as well as all mods and plugins. Not only is this CJ fun to look at and inspiring, it's also useful when it comes to reconstructing your own game. The tutorial aspect is invaluable and should be considered essential reading. I think it was a good idea to compress the images a little more. On the web you can get away with quite a bit of compression, and with a CJ like this every little bit helps. I have a fast connection but it always took a minute or two for these pages to load. I hope you are enjoying your stay in Texas. It's an interesting place to say the least. I've lived elsewhere but I was born and raised here, so I'd definitely know. Thanks again, Dedgren, for sharing all this with us.

It's been a long time since I've seen any photos in this CJ.

Unfriendly Rivalries between cities

Austin is great if you're a college student who likes live music and lots of bars, but for just about everyting else, San Antonio is a much better place to live in my opinion.quote> Except for the heat, living in Austin isn't even like living in Texas. And that's a VERY good thing. We're an island of sanity and all around good living. In Austin there are parks everywhere, and bars that have NOTHING to do with the University of Texas. It's a beautiful city filled with interesting people. That said, it's not nearly big enough to compete with Dallas or Houston in any kind of rivalry. It'll be a long time before we have a major pro sports team or something like the Dallas Symphony. Even though Austin is growing (six or seven hundered thousand people now, I think), it doesn't seem like a big city. The only other place in Texas it could possibly be compared to is Fort Worth, but FW is part of the whole Dallas/Fort Worth mess so it doesn't really stand on its own. Because of the megalopolis surrounding it, it has more "big city" problems. -
Recent problem with No-Job Zots/Abandonment
dussin23 replied to dussin23's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
I'll looik into what's been discussed here. Thanks for the replies. -
It's weird that I never had any trouble with this until I reinstalled the NAM. I don't think I have any other traffic mods, but I'll look. Thanks for your reply. edit: I did have an old traffic cop dat file. I removed it and nothing changed. I then reinstalled the NAM like you said, and commute times got up to 35 minutes. NJZ and dilapidation got worse or stayed the same...it's hard to tell. Again, this has been confined to certain blocks, in general. It's weird to me because I'll zone medium density residential and within five years it will develop a high wealth or medium wealth apartment building, get NJZs, and dilapidate. Then they'll repopulate as normal before starting the cycle again, occassionally abandoning. There's no desireablity problems and commutes from neighboring buildings are most often "short". If I tear the buildings down, they'll quickly develop into the same types of structures and do the same thing over and over. I used to have this problem when the game was unmodded, but I've played for a long time without any problems of this nature. It's ruined the game for me because I'm trying to get better at creating realistic and aesthetically pleasing cities. I'd post screen shots, but I just wiped out the city in question in order to begin again. For the fourth time. When it happens again, I'll show you guys what I'm talking about.

There should be more than enough jobs for medium weath sims. In fact, if I bulldoze a dilapidated R$$, one will come back almost immediately before a NJZ appears and the building dilapidates. There's a surplus of ALL kinds of jobs in this city and region. They just don't want to commute even a short distance.

Hi, I'm going to quote from a post I made in another forum. I think this forum may be more appropriate, but I don't know. I use SC as more of a creative outlet than a game, so I've got a bunch of mods to help me do what I want to do. I've been doing this a while, but recently I've started having residential abandonment/dilapidation preceeded by no-job zots. When the houses abandon, they say ti's because of commute time. That's pretty ridiculous to me. The graph says commute time is like four minutes! Occasionally I'll get a random house with a long commute time, and it will begin repeating a cycle of no-job zot, abandonment, and repopuloation over and over. This is a new region with only two cities. I typically try to build realistically, so I started with having a proporttional jobs to resident relationship. However, when I started getting the zots I starting zoning for more commercial and industrial jobs so I have a big surplus in both cities. It's definitely not that there's no jobs for these people, because there are. Believe me. And they're not far away, either. Right now the two cities are connected only by an avenue, but it's operating at nowhere near capacity. Most of the people from the smaller city are commuting to the medium city, and most of them aren't having a problem with it. I built a sizeable industrial area in the small city in order to give the no-job-zot people a place to work, but they will not work there. Only a few of the commuters got a new job in the industrial area...a grand total of 58 people work in it. Before this started happening, I reinstalled the NAM with perfect pathfinding. Could it be that? Another person responded and said it could be one of my other mods, to which I said: Well, it was all running fine until I reinstalled the NAM with perfect pathfinding. I'll try to use another option and maybe it'll stop it. As of right now, my SC4 is unplayable. Whole areas dilapidate. While ago, in a city of only 15k, I tried putting a subway line directly from the dilapidated neighborhood to a new industrial area. The problem residentials were medium wealth, and the industrial sector developed as high tech. There should've been more than enough jobs for them but they would not go. I tried other infrastructure improvements and nothing would work. I tear down the houses and they rebuild and IMMEDIATELY do the same thing, even with the subway line in place. It makes no sense whatsoever. Thank you very much for you expertise.

Placement of Railways.....
dussin23 replied to kingmadmushroom's topic in SimCity 4 General Discussion
Originally posted by: Bones1 I always lay out my railways before I even start to develop my city. Rail is amazingly cheap to maintain, so the extra expense on your budget for having an unused rail system laid out is very little cost. It's only something like $0.03 per rail tile to maintain. That's several times cheaper than a road! Sometimes I lay out my highway system before starting the city too, but you have to be careful about budgets if you do that. Highways are very expensive to build and maintain, so you don't want an unused one sitting around long. However, if you have other cities in your region and they will use your highway system for intercity commuting, then bus traffic from other cities will often pay you a ton of money for using your highway.quote> That's a realistic way of doing it. A lot of cities in the USA grew up around rail lines, or exploded in population once rail came along. Not much new track has been laid in recent history, either. That railway you cross everyday on your way to work? It may have newer tracks and ties, but it's probably been the same ROW for 100 years. And towns grow around roads, too. Today new development appears along existing interstate highways or new tollways. County roads in the area are expanded to serve the new population, and often older structures are condemned and torn down. Unless I'm starting a brand new region, I'll go ahead and put freeways in at the beginning in SC4, or at least preserve the right of way. With your first cities, it's more realistic to tear down stuff and squeeze new facilities in where you can. I try to go around important structures and stuff, but sometimes you can't. That's life.
