Hello and Welcome.

Here I will attempt to write some Tutorials on how to apply Textures and how to edit the textures using Gmax (SC4Bat).... Everyone is also encouraged to share their own knowledge on the subject as well. Open to all users who wish to share what they have learned and for new users to ask questions and get answers. My own tutorial will be coming soon. Whether it is a simple tutorial or a more in-depth tutorial it is my hope that this will be a great help to those who wish the join the ranks of creating custom content....

Sounds a nice idea, looking forward to it.

I'll move this over to the BAT forum, since the Batting School is no longer active. ;)

I'll be taking this course, thank-you, got everything installed.   I suppose I should be reading the manual for the B.A.T., but it doesn't look like Gmax came with one.

The installer installed a folder for the equivalent of a manual from TS, but the content is a separate download from there.  I got it.  It gives a vague idea how to make a racecar and a sailboat, but not much else.

Thanks for the links to further resources, the turbosquid tutorial is not very useful as it seems to assume some degree of experience with computer-based drafting.   I need the equivalent of kindergarten basics for this one.  I'm still fumbling through learning lot-making with these circa 1980's programs.

Really? I found it one of the most well written and user friendly guides. Bear in mind though, it's not directed at modelling for SimCity, but it gives you a great deal of information about using gMax or SC4 BAT. I'm not sure which tutorials you were doing, but it starts of with a Mace and some animation. Did you start at the beginning or skip ahead?

BAT Essentials is a great tutorial for gently going through making a small office step by step. - Meh, just noticed the images are gone :(. Moderator, if you are seeing this, if I had all the images and was willing to fix the tutorials formatting, how would you feel about me fixing it up?

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

I'd be all for the BAT Essentials tutorial being fixed up. I originally learned how to make BATs in gmax from that tutorial. It's not perfect but it's very useful to beginners - plus a reasonable bit of the knowledge can be carried over to the wonderful realm of 3DS.

It was awhile ago that I started the TS tutorial, I'm looking at it again.  I was following it okay, but when it came to clicking and dragging in the gmax window, making a rectangle, the tool wasn't doing what it was supposed to. I suspected a compatibility issue and shelved the program.  So I'm back at it again.  It didn't require a compatibility mode, and Windows 8.1 loaded it okay, so I'll try again.

    Step 1

    gmax_step2.jpg

click the perspective screen then go down the lower right corner and tick the full screen button this will expand the perspective window

    gmax_step1.jpg

for this simple tutorial I will show you how to apply the textures using drag and drop... first tick the box button the one I circled for you..

now we are going to create an object we can play with... :)

    gmax_step3.jpg

now we have a box or cube... you can make it as big or as small as you want it...

since I want to view this box from the top or from the top ingame view I am going to go ahead and tick the bat tool

    Gmax_toolbox.jpg

just tick the little hammer and then go down to where it says preview

tick the day button and it will then render a day view which will also change the view to camera zoom which will allow us to see it more or less the top

    gmax_step4.jpg

now I have changed it to perspective view so now lets go back to the buttons on the right hand side

to get the texture for this object.  roll your mouse pointer to the top right corner you will see 3 balls of different colors click that to bring up the next screen

    gmax_step5.jpg

now to your left side your gonna want to click file system this will bring up the screen of the textures that you have in your texture folder. I have a alot. now I have selected the brick maxis stone1.jpg. then I dragged and dropped it onto my cube.

    texturedbox.jpg

Simple right. The next short tutorial I will show you how to edit this texture on the cube to have smaller bricks

The next tutorial will be next week gonna try to put the next one together a bit better.

Questions are welcome.... This was just the basic drag and drop technique I have used to get the textures on my objects. I will use the same block here and add a few other objects we can play with using different textures. As I learn something new I will show you all here so that you can also learn...

I much prefer the above view of my objects allows me to see better. I hope this has been a help. Suggestions for more tutorials are also welcome and I or someone else can post their ideas. My tutorials will use many pictures as I find it much easier to explain and show how to do something.

    Great!

I learned how to use the BAT a while ago with the BAT Essentials Tutorial, and I could use a reminder, although it it would also be neat if it was fixed.

I'll be following these tutorials. Thanks for taking the time to make them
