Personally, I highly object to building at Hudson Railyard to block the view of the Empire State Building.  At the top, On37 and the Tower Verre are really the only ones I like.  Sigh...

The "Manhattanization" of every new trendy places in New York is seriously becoming worrying.

I used to do a study in Williamsburg 3 years ago, and the same is happening there. I saw that kind of projects planned for Coney Island too in a near future.

I don't think building skyscrapers everywhere around the city will put it up. Skyscrapers should be implanted in Manhattan only. Not in others areas such as Greenpoint, Hunter's point and Williamsburg which are very charming the way they are NOW.

What a shame that "tower obcession"

Manhattan is really changing, particularly in the more wealthy areas. All of the small book stores, cafe's, pubs, etc are going out of business. Soon every block will have a Starbucks, Citibank, Dunkin Donuts, and McDonalds.

Im starting to see something really odd in Manhattan with all of these new projects.. and that is the lack of "respect" for skyscraper areas in a city. See, we are all used to see tall buildins in downtown areas, and even if new york has "2 downtowns" Im starting to see that some of these projects are way out of place. I mean, we have only see the ones in Modtown.. but have you checked the downtown? there are right now at least 3 super towers being constructed, one being a hideous "stacked houses" styled.

Now, I dont have a problem with some of the buildings such as One57.. or even the 432 (although I must say its a total disrespect towards the rest of the city). But to be honest, that Hudson spire would look way out of line.

Contrary to popular opinion, I like the Hudson yards project, although, based on pictures, whats gonna happen with the tracks?

Anyways.. as I said in a comment before.. mixed feelings about all this..

On the other hand...

Is the NYBT ready to BAT all this new buildings?

I'm not at all familiar with NYC geography/topography, but I find the OWTC horrifyingly ugly (moreso than even the Twin Towers!). The fact that the roof is only at 1370 ft or so doesn't help (and I thought it would actually be, you know, tall...inaccessible spires don't really count in my book). I think shadows on Central Park ought to be avoided, but if I had my way, I'd make the US the home of the World's tallest building again, even if it stood out like a sore thumb, Something with an ode to art deco and maybe a mix of modernism mixed in. So I'm a fan of tall buildings (not overshadowing Central Park), but often they're done without taste. The Shard is certainly iconic, and even fascinating to look at, but it doesn't mean (to me, at least) that it's not ugly. The Makkah Royal Clock in Mecca is a very neat example of distorting traditional perceptions of scale to make a ridiculously large structure look normal size from aerial photos due to the way it's proportioned. I think that something like that is key in designing a landmark building whose design stands the test of time. The ESB and Chrysler Building are good examples; the twin towers are indeed iconic, but their brutalist architecture was dated and definitely ugly by most people's standards, I'd say (obviously you can disagree).

Glass towers don't really do it for me, and pencil-like towers are really out of place in a city like NY. That's all I have to say about that.

Well, I wouldn't mind a shard styled tower in nyc.. In fact I would build the shard, but taller.. In my opinion, that building would've been great instead of the new OWTC.. But that's just me.

APSMS: The Twin Towers were actually International Style. ;)

As for more modern architecture... Well I guess the reflective facades save me the trouble of craning my neck to look at the sky.

Not a big fan of most of these, especially anything called Hudson Yards.  You just shouldn't block the Empire State Building from the river.

Hey NYBAT-ers,
I couldn't find another thread like this so I made one (hope that's cool).

Anyway, I just wanted to know if someone is working on a 5 Pointz BAT? It'd be a GREAT landmark for C$/R$ res areas.
If possible, I want to nominate member Goofyguytpa  for collaboration or/and commission. S/he is great at creating those worn grungy textures on their BATs.

Thanks

the right place to ask

Also, goofyguytpa hasn't been online for a while and his last upload has been made very long time ago.

However, that nominating stuff is a good idea, maybe you will see this feature in some of the upcoming projects.

Yes, please use the official BAT Request thread. :) It's for all BATs, whether they are from NY and potentially relevant for the NYBT or not.

Hello guys.. Now, Ive spent the weekend in NYC, and I had the chance to visit the new World Trade Center.. Anybody interested in giving it a try? I mean, there is one in the stex, but that one was made based on the concept art, and has a resemblance, but not accurate..

Anwyays, I think the new WTC is a must for this team to recreate.. but then again.. just an idea.. and of course it would be a great chance to revive the team.. kinda dead for the last half of the year.. except for Aaron and Seraf... I would love btw if we could get those Tudor towers.. ehm ehm.. Please upload them =)

Would be awesome someone do it again, the last version was cool too, but I think it needs to be redone.

If I was good at it I would, but I do not have the capacity to do such a large project as this.

Let it be clear that I am not criticizing the previous version , I'm only supporting cmdp's idea.

If I remember correctly, the old version was also done in gmax, so if a new version were to be done in 3ds max, it would be sharper/more detailed.

Naa,i think it looks quite nice. Also have it in my game and still can`t decide which one i should place, the new modern WTC or the old MAXIS Twin Towers WTC.

If there should be a WTC with updated look like all rendered in HD and such than this should be the classic one,and as far as i know someone`s already on it.

Well, sort of. Last update was sometime back in May, right? Still. Serious quality in DK35's work. I can't wait, but it seems I'll have to do so for a while anyway.  :dead:

I agree that we need to liven this forum a bit. But we can restart from BATting a sculpture, a subway enterance or any similar NYC things first. It is not practical to work on a skyscraper at once while so many good BATters have been off line for a period of time and not a single BAT was made during the last few months.

I do wish Paul could come back to finish one or two of his projects though. :(

As a mere observer of NYBT, I think there are a few projects that should be a priority if the team comes back to life for one last push.

Lincoln Center

Freedom Tower

Columbus Circle

Empire State Building

Anything from Times Square

As a human and as a content creator myself (albeit on a much more humble level!), I think there are a few things that should be a priority for the team members:

  1. Their real lives with families, partners, friends, making a living...
  2. Whatever they enjoy to make because BATting is a hobby and not an obligation

And if there is time to BAT and whatever outcome is something that we like, we can consider ourselves very lucky. I'd agree with you if we were talking about a paid developer team, but we're talking about a few wonderful guys who choose to make stuff and share it with us for free. :)

I'd have to agree with T Wrecks here, I'm all for support for some really interesting and ambitious projects that bring older BATs forward, but priorities are priorities and BATing really should be more of a hobby thing -- there really shouldn't be any a pressing need to make any of these BATs, no matter how tempting :P

I'm really not trying to say that they should be slaves of the bats lol... I'm just saying, having a new version, with 3dsmax, and of course.. A more accurate one..

The shape seems to be ok, I mean, the concept design stayed almost the same, but the textures and the final result changed a lot.. An updated version.. With the kind of quality as in the shard by xyladoria..

Just a suggestion.. If someone feels like it lol.. And yes Times Square.. That's a must!!

I'd have to agree on Times Square being a project for someone to pick up. I've been contemplating doing it myself, but I'm not sure my BATing abilities are up to scratch to take it up :P

Pfff, that was a joke, right?I mean your Mass Effect Stuff looks awesome,so i guess your skills are great.

Thinking of that the Mass Effect BATs are Conversions from the actual game, why not using the same technique for NYBT BATs?I know that for example Meshes and Textures from GTA IV (of which the Location is based on NYC) can be extracted with Open IV and converted into 3DS Max with a Plugin called GIMS.

This game is full of neat looking stuff that would be suitable for the NYBT Gang and for SC4 (not only the Landmarks but smaller stuff like classic Dumbbell Tenements, all types of classic NYC Apartmentbuildings etc....)

I totally agree.. your BATs are of high quality.. giving it a try would be awesome, and it would be a way to get things started.. sometimes a fresh start (or in this case a new member) can do the magic!!
