So I've noticed that there are a lot of us here on Simtropolis that have an interest in Asian Pop music. Interestingly There's no thread regarding asian music (Despite the big Hallyu wave and all) Anyways, I've made this thread to cover and compile all this including J-Pop (Japanese Pop) and C-Pop (Chinese Pop), along with the all well known K-Pop along with discussing culture, News, New releases, Biases, Celebrity News, Fashion etc.

 

This thread isn't only limited to Korean, Japanese and Chinese music, so feel free to discus other types of asian music as well. I've used these three because these are generally bigger ones out there that most people are aware of.

Oh my its about time! My bias is KARA and my ultimate bias in KARA is Han Seungyeon. They're making their comeback as a 4 member group since the departure of Nicole and Jiyoung as well as the new addition Youngji (same bday as me! OMG).

I've recently started really liking 2NE1 (might consider myself a Blackjack ), Infinite and VIXX. Favourite songs ATM (not entirely the latest) are Red Light by f(x), Red by Hyuna, Good Luck by BEAST or Batoost , R.O.D. by G-Dragon featuring Lydia Paek, Eternity by VIXX and Happiness by Red Velvet is growing on me very fast but I still gotta learn their names...

 

I'm trying to find K-Indie songs too such as Neon Bunny which I love!

According to Minho, SHINee won't be coming back this year but Taemin will be making is solo debut and 2PM is supposed to comeback in September.

Hmm, I haven't watched any of the eatyourkimchi youtube channels, but I've seen them appear on SBS PopAsia's (Australian Popasian radio thing) live streaming shows from time to time.

Aah yes they have a slot on Fridays now after the live show on PopAsia. I don't listen to PopAsia as much as I did before and there's so many changes now...

 

Regarding J-Pop, I just became absorbed in K-Pop and stopped listening to J-Pop, but without J-Pop I wouldn't have found K-Pop. I've never listened to much C-Pop but I do like G.E.M. (she just performed a few days ago in Melbourne).

 

Do you have a favourite Davichi song? I would say 8282 is my favourite though its rather old, I like the mix of the ballad and rather upbeatness (not a word is it? )

Hmmm, well I listen to Davichi when I feel moody, all ballad hahaha. I'm not sure of any real favourites. I'm just waiting for any of their new releases and songs. I haven't actually kept up with K-Pop much, I'm more absorbed at Cpop a the moment because I'm learning chinese (mandarin) as a school subject and It is the kind of music from my ethnic/cultural background. I'm also hoping to get up to date with Jpop because currently K-Pop and C-Pop dominate my phone and lost touch with it for a few years. Hmm, I;m also sorta looking  for any good ballad songs or artist like Davichi (I know I'm such a sad girly kinda guy haha )

Oh no, that's totally fine, I love ballads too, I try to sing a long and it makes me sad even though I don't understand the meaning haha! Missing You by 2NE1 is sort of a ballad and Eyes, Nose, Lips by Taeyang is quite a hit ATM but I don't know much ballads apart from Davichi

Hmm, well there's Younha, except most of her songs are upbeatish ballad, but I don't find her osns as good as Daivichi. I guess they're songs are more comparable to those you hear in Korean Drama OST's. I think those are probably one of the few best ballads. I'm glad I'm not the only guy that love Ballads~ I can give credit to Ballad for getting me through some sad times (Looking at it I have a girly kinda personality for a guy  )

PSY anyone?   Seriously though, I aint a fan of female bands but SCANDAL rocks. More than just singing and dancing, they are indeed actually a band. Unfortunately they are not quite as famous as the others. 

 

Speaking of which, Old Codex and Granrodeo should also be considered here. Although most of their famous works are due to anime opening and ending songs. I actually get to listen to more Jpop in anime unlike Kpop which I get to hear nearly everywhere in the Philippines.

I miss the blood squibs they used to use...parents must have complained!  In previous versions, this play ended in a boy band bloodbath followed by Tackey committing blood-soaked seppuku.  It was quite moving...

If the person at least knows another song prior to Gangnam Style or from another artist I will accept that but if not then I wouldn't call that person a true Kpop fan (my opinion).

Yea thats her! Ayumi Hamasaki! Shes like the Queen of Jpop... Hm I don'y really know any other JPop artists persides YUI and Ayumi Hamasaki. But I Love Yui! Her songs are so authentic! But I think shes on hiatus? I haven't heard from her since 2012, apparently I think she joined a band and might make a comeback in a band.

Most of my junior high school students listen to Arashi (who have several TV shows), Nishino Kana, and for some strange reason Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has been popular in recent times.  A group named Spy Air is relatively popular.  There are only a handful of students I've met who will admit to liking AKB or any of their clones.  Older people might still listen to Koda Kumi or Hamasaki Ayumi, but they're 'old' now, like Smap.  These kids' parents all listened to them 15 years ago.  Geez, has it been that long?

If I'm listening to Jpop, I'm listening to Shiina Ringo and her band (now broken up) Tokyo Jihen.  I can't say enough good things about her.  From her very first singles all the way through her time with The Incidents, Shiina Ringo has proven herself to be incredibly talented with a stunning range of music she can write and perform.  She can straight-up rock, she can perform ballads (boring by anyone but her), she can perform jazz, and her soundtrack for the colorful Edo-period oiran movie "Sakuran" is amazing.  She is one of the very few popular musicians in Japan who has any kind of individual style that does not seem contrived by a group of suited men in an office somewhere in Shinjuku.  Because she exists and is completely awesome, it is so easy for me to be a music snob.

 

Most music here is far too commercial to be any good, so I don't listen to it.  I like some songs by Ketsumeishi and Rip Slyme, and Asian Kung Fu Generation has some decent stuff.  The Ulfuls (from Osaka, the owarai capital of Japan) have hilarious music videos, but they're old.  I came across a rock band called The Back Horn who actually know how to rock, but I don't have any friends into music and whatever's underground is beyond my efforts to find.

 

Since most of you seem to like the commercials, here are a few suggestions of things to check out that I don't know if you've heard of:

Koda Kumi

Nishino Kana

Minmi

Amuro Namie (immensely popular, and actually decently talented)

E-Girls (EXILE's all-female dance group)

Perfume

Otsuka Ai

Ikimonogakari (still quite popular)

Kan-Johnny's (a comedy-themed Johnny's group from Kansai, they have a bunch of owarai TV appearances and even a recent Power Rangers-style movie complete with theme songs done by them!)

Sekai no Owari (I hate them with the auto-tuned passion of a thousand thousand burning suns, but they are popular)

 

I'm certain there are many that are well-liked by your average pop fans, but I pretty much refuse to listen to them.  Go ahead and feel free to rock on with anyone you find you enjoy.  I'll be busy shooing the youngsters off my lawn.

 

EDIT: Oh, and I almost forgot, for you girl-group fans, Momoiro Clover-Z (who have a HUGE following among Japanese TV stars) is unnervingly popular.  They sing the opening and closing theme songs to the new Sailor Moon remake.

Yes, this one is very much like a samurai musical, mish-mashing dance numbers that are modern idol pop, and dazzling-costumed performances of famous scenes from traditional kabuki.  The show is held each spring in Tokyo's Shinbashi Enbujou, a kabuki theater known for more modern and experimental kabuki acts and that is often paired and contrasted with the purely traditional shows of the better known Kabuki-za (on the STEX, yay!).  An amusing trend I have noticed in the staged acts, be it Byakkotai, Chūshingura, Yoshitsune, Masakado, etc., is that all the boy idols are slaughtered en masse onstage by Tackey, who then commits melodramatic seppuku.  Sometimes, the Juniors are repeatedly massacred by Tackey multiple times during the course of a single show.  I wonder what the intended message is...or is it simply just that Tackey with a katana is impossibly cool.

I haven't really watched any Korean dramas...I once started "Goong," but got sidetracked somewhere.  I did enjoy the movie "Cheot Nun," with Lee Joon-gi goofily romancing Miyazaki Aoi in Kyoto.

 

For Taiwanese dramas, I have only fully watched "Zhànshén Mars" and the first "Meteor Garden" series.  Yeah, yeah...Vic Chou softie fan, and "Mars" was absolutely awesome.  I know perky Barbie Hsu is supposed to be playing young and tough in these old shows, but her voice always sounds too me like she is leading a cadre of the Red Guards, making it oddly funny to watch her berate F4.  I didn't quite like the establishing set up for "Meteor Garden II" as was not ready to go through all that drama between Shān Cài and Dào Míng Sì all over yet again from square one.  From Mainland China, I watched "Return of the Condor Heroes," but I must admit the genre is still too unfamiliar to me, and I just do not know enough of the tropes of Chinese historical fantasy drama or Chinese culture to be able to understand why characters act or respond the way they do.

 

As for the J-doramas, I liked "Tatta Hitotsu no Koi," "Taiyō no Kisetsu," "Yōkai Ningen Bem," "Samurai High School," "Majo no Jōken," "Absolute Boyfriend," "Last Cinderella," "Suppli," "Orthros no Inu," "Nobuta wo Produce," "Yoshitsune," "Fūrin Kazan"...hmm, I guess I watch a lot of idol romances, and, if I could only keep one (wah!), it would be "Tatta Hitotsu no Koi."

 

I recently watched the first season of "SHARK," and though I found the boy band storyline to be unforgivably clichéd and incompetent, the character of the surly replacement vocalist by newcomer Hirano Sho was fun and entertaining.  Still, I actually found myself agreeing with the worldly character of the music production company manager:  this is a business, and if these bratty band members cannot shape up, replace the little punks!  I have not tried to watch the second season, whose writing is described as even worse than the first season.

Ahh Yes Absolute boyfriend! I've see the taiwanese version of it (Starring Aaron Yan from Fahrenheit ^^) It's a bit weird, and different. I haven't seen the Japanese version yet, but its probably better. I've seen some of the korean version of Hana Kimi and all of the Japanese Hana Kimi. I found the Jap version better with the casts, the acting and all, it made it look so natural. I definitely recommend Hana Kimi (The Jap vers) the ending is soo sad   yet so happy. (Its sorta of a romance but its not really focused on that - really a good drama to sorta define real mateship and really humorous as well)

I haven't been watching any dramas lately but the last one I watched was The Moon That Embraces The Sun (ft Han Ga In and the child actress that was in the MV for Seung Gi's "Return", I think her name is Jung something ). City Hunter was also a great K-Drama ft Lee Min Ho.

 

I might watch You Who Came From The Stars or The Heirs (for the fun of it XD)

Oh my, Zettai Kareshi on anime was way better than the live action. Honestly speaking only the current run of Rurouni Kenshin live action is quite palatable to my taste, the others are simply . These includes Death Note. L: Change the World and Ouran High School Host Club and the one I first mentioned. Korean dramas are also way better than Japanese. Although if I may speak freely about anime without someone getting wild about Free!   I might be listing a lot. Perhaps this thread can be renamed as Asian Media Thread.
