Wow, that is really devastating. I'm just glad that my relatives and family live farther up north in Luzon.

Ouch! I saw some pictures of 400-500 year old churches located in Bohol in ruins. Wonder on how will that affect the tourism industry there. Sayang! :(

You are not hurt? ...This reminds me that in Russia ancient historical churches were demolished on purpose by the communists

Felt here as intensity 3 (Davao), never felt though since maybe I was still on my way to work.

Felt real sad for Bohol as a lot of their landmarks are ruined or damaged :(

Looks awful. The Pakistan EQ was higher on the Richter scale but was this worse of the Mercalli Scale? Were people crushed inside?

The earthquake was pretty shallow, according to the US Geological Survey Report, so I believe it would be worse in the Mercalli Scale. Also, most buildings (from $ residential homes to $$$ mansions) in the Philippines are made out of poor quality concrete in nickel-diameter rebar, and those churches were made out of corals, which are brittle.

There were reports that there were people inside those churches when the earthquake struck so the casualties would rise.

Terrible mess.  I hope no one was hurt by the collapse.

Is there any funding to repair and restore the building?

Is there any funding to repair and restore the building?

Before the earthquake, some of the churches (particularly Loboc) were in the process of restoration; that might be allocated to the rebuilding of the church. The government also promised to rebuild the churches if they can, however they also state that there must be a separation between the church and the state. If the government is not allowed to help out with the reconstruction, then it would be passed on to the private sector.

Wow, that's horrible. Did anyone die there?

Fortunately, no people were underneath the belfry when it collapsed, however, a couple of people sustained injuries when they got hit by hurling rocks from the collapsing structure.

With the oceans warming up, bigger storms are to be expected.  The ring of fire seems to be fairly active in the last while.  The seismology mavens are saying both Cascadia and Yellowstone are over due.  The former will raise absolute blazes in the Pacific as far as Japan;  the latter will probably wipe out a good chunk of the U.S. and Canada.

    *puts on engineer's cap*

Concrere is in general a poor building material to use in earthquake-prone areas because:

    1) seismic force on a structure is directly proportional to its weight, and concrete is heavy compared to its strength

    2) seismic force means shear, which concrete is not very good at carrying (rebar must be designed to carry shear and tension in concrete structures)

I don't know why the Philippines use concrete so extensively as opposed to wood or steel. Perhaps it's a matter of cost and availability.

It's also worth noting that the worst damage appears to be to older structures. Which is to be expected - in modern times we know how to design buildings to withstand earthquakes. As recently as 100 years ago we did not.
