    1558.

    I did notice on my travels that the US is much more... I'm going to go with "unabashedly patriotic" to be on the safe side, than a lot of other countries.

    We only require the Oath of Allegiance (or Affirmation if preferred) for certain public officials. I'm pretty sure I learned about its existence in 3rd grade, never had to say it though, certainly not daily. My schools (primary school and high school), much like most of the other ones, had one flag on a flagpole and that was it. None in classrooms. There was actually some controversy a while back about schools being required to fly the flag to receive full funding.

    1561: STRAYYYANS ALLLET USS REJOOOYCE!

    We had to sing the first TWO stanzas of Advance Australia Affair at each assembly. But I forget the second verse.

    We never learned the french anthem at school, it's a shame :angry: ! Fortunately we have youtube :yes:

    1562

    Well... It means (could be wrong on stuff) "Come, children of the Fatherland, the Day of glory has arrived. Before us today stands tyranny..." And the refrain is "to arms, citizens! From you battalions. March on, march on, so that I pure blood will furrow our fields."

    It sounds beautiful, but you could curse someone out in French and it would sound beautiful.

    The driver of the black vehicle was apparently drunk and entered the opposing ramp of the freeway. As a result, the vehicles crashed the moment the video terminated. Luckily, one of the drivers sustained minor cuts. The main question: how could the authorities fail to see the vehicle entering the opposing ramp to the freeway? :angry::rage::angry:

    I'veseen that before in Philly.

    You translated it almost wright ! Good :thumb:

    The thing is, that the french anthem is one of the most brutal anthems of our planet (it speaks about blood, tyraneous fights etc...)

    The US' national anthem was written as just a poem. It was later put to the tune of an old British gentleman's society song.

    The worst part is, we also have a patriotic song that's "God Save The Queen" with different words. :D

    I learned the american anthem by heart and not the french one, because the us anthem is not as violent as the french on, is way easier to learn and it's the US anthem :P (I had to learn this!)

    Double post?

    I learned in 8th grade History that the US Narional Anthem is to the tune of a British Drinking song, for shame.

    The Canadian national anthem might be changed to get rid of the word "God" since this is a multi-religious (and non-religous) country. Also the word "Sons" might also be removed or changed to get rid of a male-dominant word.

    The song in question is To Anacreon in Heaven, and no, it is not a drinking song. It's from a musician's club. Quite high cultured.

    Changing the lyrics to a song is an insult to the person who wrote it. It should always be sung exactly as originally written.

    That said, the current official version of "O Canada" is already altered... and both of those stated goals could be achieved by reverting to the original lyrics. :meh: That just seems like a no-brainer, then.

    We had to sing the first TWO stanzas of Advance Australia Affair at each assembly. But I forget the second verse.

    Don't worry, no-one remembers the second verse. :P

    Beneath our radiant Southern Cross

    We'll toil with hearts and hands;

    To make this Commonwealth of ours

    renowned of all the lands;

    For those who've come across the seas

    We've boundless plains to share;

    With courage let us all combine

    To Advance Australia Fair.

    In joyful strains then let us sing

    Advance Australia Fair.

    The original had more verses and different wording.

    To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

    1570: It's why I am glad that we changed our anthem from God Save the Queen in 1974.

    The interesting part about the British national anthem is that it actually changes depending on the gender of the reigning monarch. I'm rather used to it being "God Save the Queen". Once Elizabeth croaks we're going to start hearing "God Save the King" instead. That's going to be weird.

    Especially since if the king is married there will still be a queen.

    Why should we have to save any of them? They are meaningless.

    My camera sucks. It can't take pictures inside, and it sometimes turns purple. I don't know why, but it does.

    You know you have a serious camera when the lens attached to it is bigger than the camera itself.

    There are many people who will spend more on a lens than the camera itself. I can't fathom that.

    Fathom can mean two things:

    1. A unit of length equal to 6 feet (1.83 meters), used principally in the measurement and specification of marine depths

    2. To penetrate to the meaning or nature of; comprehend.

    Words with multiple meanings can be confusing. One of the reasons why it is said that English is one of the hardest languages to learn. But words that you can use consecutively are awesome.

    Also, 2 post rule. ;)

    the 2 post rule is one of those things that can just slip under your radar, something you should know but somehow you just miss it. It's like highways that way.

    I'd say English is rather easy. But that might be because there's English everywhere, which is not the case for, say, French.

    I think it really depends on which language you're coming from to learn English.  If you're coming from say, Japanese or Chinese, you're gonna have a hard time.  Not only is the alphabet different, but the philosophy behind the language itself, the idioms and sayings, are all coming from very different places.  With other Western languages, I think there is a bit of a shared Western viewpoint that makes it a bit easier to pick it up.  Not 100% of course, but close enough that when you learn certain things you can be like, "Ah, that makes sense, I can see that."  Japanese?  Well, I've been here for years and it's still baffling, the same way all my students are baffled by English.

    The other thing is that thanks to English pulling vocabulary from Germanic, Norse, and Romance roots, most Western languages are going to have some degree of vocabulary that is similar.

    For example, I don't know French, but when I see "Circulation fluide a A-40 ouest" on a variable message sign on the highway, it's easy to figure out that that means "free flowing traffic on A-40 westbound" since the words all resemble English words with similar meanings.
