I HATED high school when I was there, but looking back, it really wasn't that bad.  I was pretty low on the social totem pole (marching band president!) and got picked on a bit, but honestly, there was nothing that I can remember that was particularly traumatic or scarring.  It's worse while you're there for sure, though.  College was AWESOME, though.  Classes I got to choose, a semester in Japan, so many people that being 'cool' or whatever doesn't matter (unless you're a trendy barfly), it was awesome.  I'd go back to that in a heartbeat.

I don't look back with complete fondness on college, either. It was better than high school, certainly, but I still have my fair share of regrets about it.

I wouldn't want to go back to any previous point in my life because going back is... well, going backwards. I'm more about moving forward.

High School was OK. I did well, didn't get into any trouble. Could have done without the hour-long train rides there and back every day but oh well.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

I remember once someone tried to pick on me in school but I shoved them into a locker and broke their nose, bigger people never really scared me and I was pretty much left alone the rest of the time I was there.

The same thing happened to my dad. I remember being in a fair share of fights when I was younger but never after 9th grade. Not in school at least. If you do have to fight, not that I recommend it, but if you have to, always let your opponent throw the first punch. Dodge it and light them up.  If you knock them down, offer to help them up and settle your differences right then and there. You might even end up as friends.

Never got in a fight. Ever. I had no friends and no one picked on me. It was good that way...

Advice about fighting has to vary from place to place, though, Where I went to school, if a fight broke out, both participants would get suspended, no questions asked, and no one was willing to hear anything about who started it. So, the advice in my town had to be: if someone tries to pick a fight with you, either diplomatically diffuse the situation, or run away. Do not hit them back because then you will get in trouble too.

The intriguing thing? Most of the physical fights that broke out in school were girl on girl. If guys wanted to fight they'd do so later and elsewhere.

That's a load of crock. Once someone threw me into a wall and kicked me in the ribs simply as I was going about my own business. So the school would have suspended me, despite the fact he took me by surprise? Yeah I'd be taking that to the school board or whatever.

When I say high school, I am referring to middle school as well as high school. In the later years, it quiets down as those who stay in school knuckle down for their finals, whereas the trash has already long left. Don't stress too much.

I was part of a class that had the dubious distinction of being the worst class to go through the school system in quite a few years.  But there really weren't all that many fights, there weren't a ton of terrible bullying problems, and there was not a whole lot of movie-style drama going on besides the usual teenage stuff.  I remember my brother got in a couple fights in the 'mudhole' (football practice field between the jr and sr high schools), but most fights were between "tough guys" trying to prove things, but most of the time, ESPECIALLY during school, the teachers were always on top of it before it could get out of hand.  I guess I was pretty lucky to have gone to a place where the teachers were all in all above average and tried to do their jobs well.  Really, though, most of us probably have gone to places like that.  Who really goes to a place where the people who work there arrive thinking that they're going to stink the joint up and purposefully set out to ruin the kids and engage in active neglect?  There are, of course, stinky teachers out there, but most are average and some are really, REALLY good, and it's true pretty much everywhere except the worst districts in the worst neighborhoods.

Yoshi, the situation you describe is not how fights would start in my school. The fights we dealt with were not bully-related. They were things like girl 1 beating the crap out of girl 2 because girl 2 made out with girl 1's boyfriend.

But yes, in your situation you would be expected to escape and/or call for help from staff. Fighting back would get you in trouble because the district perceived it as returned aggression, not self defense. Hell, even if a fight broke out on the school bus, where there's nowhere to run to, both parties would get in trouble. Is that right? Absolutely not... and that wasn't the only bad discipline philosophy. The principal at my high school would hide in her office because she was afraid of some of the students. Not exactly a great authority figure.

1486: When you're in a corner the only way to run is out... and that often involves getting past whoever may be in your path.

I forgot to mention that this kid did that because someone started a (completely untrue) rumour that I called his sister a word synonymous with being promiscuous. Last I heard, he's a methamphetamine addict, hardly too surprised at that one there.

Rumors are the second worst thing about school (group projects). They serve no purpose other than to have some bum's social status and to downgrade another person. It sucks. Thankfully, no one spread rumors about me. They were more like "Why don't you talk?"

I had a really great principal in high school and most of my teachers were pretty great as well. My trig teacher was a miserable old coot but I liked most of my other teachers.

As far as gossip goes, I do my best to ignore it. Some of it squeaks its way into my brain on occasion and may even get repeated by me but I try to avoid it.

I had this awesome chemistry teacher who was one of the 'cool' teachers in the school, which also meant that the 'cool' people in school liked him, too.  He made this kind of football game on the chalkboard called quiz bowl where your team advances yards for how many people stand up if the person chosen by the opposing team gets the question right until you get a touchdown.  Well, I knew all the answers because school was easy, but there were two football players on the opposing team who kept choosing me when we stood up.  They were laughing with each other, like it was somehow hilarious and stupid that I was always right.  They were also probably waiting for me to get a question wrong so they could really make fun of me.  But the teacher, he stopped the game and threatened to kick them out of class (in-school suspension) and then ignore them in the halls and give them extra difficult homework.  I remember him getting so angry at them for making fun of someone who did the work and knew the answers when they clearly didn't.  Since this was the most awesome teacher in school, his words and his threat shut them right up and they were silent for the rest of class and they left me alone for the last two and a half years of high school.  It was one of the greatest things I have ever been a part of.

I had an awesome math teacher in middle school who everyone thought was weird, but funny. He kind of had his own language, which I think only a few people understood, myself included.

That trig teacher I mentioned had a reputation as the teacher who peed herself in class. It wasn't in my class so I didn't witness it. I kind of felt bad for her but also kind of didn't because she was such a jerk. My homeroom/English teacher in 6th grade was also a jerk, along with my 9th grade biology teacher and 9th grade health teacher. Pretty much every other teacher I had was either awesome or someone I was indifferent about.
