What's the first city you'll build?

I thought this would be an interesting thread, because we could all share what ideas we have for our first cities in SimCity; in preparation for release. I have actually drawn a sketch up of the Viridian Woods region in an isometric view as well as the city tiles in it, and have gone through and labeled 8 tiles with each specializing in something. I plan on my first city being an Education oriented city, with a very large university and some community colleges. It will have a small town of about 5,000 to the south of the university, which will attract students from across the entire region. Here is an overview for the region in case you haven't seen it. This university city will be located in the heart of the woods, to the west of a large clearing. (this is not the one I drew)

Hmm It depends on which region I like when I scroll thru the options.

I probably will build a Casino town, I really like the SCI-FI casino.

The casino themed city is actually so-o-o overused since Mr Librande showed it in developer tutorials.

Mostly I wanna try the trade specialization or culture. So I guess it will mostly a touristic type of city... Who knows. Maybe I'll stay with small suburban, realistic city. Btw hello to the community

As any game I like to do the opposite of what is popular. Green, pretty cities seem to be the in thing...so when I get simcity (when its 39.99 or lower) id make a heavy heavy heavy industry city.

I'm going to shoot for hitech industry and export for profit. :)

The invention of beer and the wheel were the foundation of modern civilization & together were the catalyst that split humanity into two distinct subgroups: liberals & conservatives. Some men spent their days tracking & killing animals to B-B-Q at night while they were drinking beer. These men were called "conservatives". Other men who were weaker & less skilled at hunting learned to live off the conservatives by showing up for the nightly B-B-Q's & doing the sewing, fetching & hair dressing. They were called "progressives".

Maybe so, but the Casino looks to be one of the easiest specializations in general.  It's a money-maker that requires no resource other than people, and has no real costs other than increased police demand and the need for better transportation.  Culture falls into the same category.  So with these sorts of cities, you don't need to worry about raw materials, or the global market, or any of that.

Now personally, I plan on making a 3-town set.  One city will be a University town with a Culture specialization, one will be a trading/commercial town, and one will be an industry (in the long run, computers) town that handles the power generation.  Combine the three and you basically get a complete city.

I have a couple of fair weather gamers interested in playing within my region, so I will need to forgo the combined city theme until after they get tired of playing or discover their inner city builder child. :)

I think I'll make a Casino city. I saw the video on the dev blog and it looked really awesome.

For my first quad, I'll be playing two cities and a friend will be playing the other two.

My two cities will focus on extracting and refining raw materials (drilling/mining) in one, while focusing on a business district with trade and tourism in the other. My friend will be building two cities mostly residential focusing on education in one, and with a semi-long term plan for turning the other into a high-tech electronics city. Our super-long-term goal is to construct the Space Shuttle great work in the first quad.

I plan on making a nasty dump of a city that specializes in oil and coal and taking in everyone's sewage and garbage.  Instead of spending the profits on them, I'm going to funnel the money back to the other towns and cities.  Dr. Vu will feel at home.   :kitty:

I've always played my cities by ear so I likely only pick what I build once I get into the game. Though that high tech city did look pretty nice.

Also I know one of the people I'm going to be playing with plans on making the biggest hell-hole she possibly can so I've going that to take into account.

I plan on making a city that specializes in mining, though I have yet to decide on Coal or Oil. I then intend to harvest the land for all that I can before using the profit to make industrial based city. After that I am going to look at making a separate education based town, though I might change the order that I make them.

I'd like to try a trade city with rail and sea connections.  I haven't seen or read much about the trading part of the game and I'd like to try it out.  Also curious to see how many successfully specializations you can have in one city and the different synergies between them.

Well I have joined a MP region as Mayor of 'Trader's Ridge' in an island region. I'll start out by specialising in trade and mining the resources to fund this, and later develop a commercial centre and transport/trade hub. Elements of gambling/culture/tourism may be sown but will probably be kept as minority developments rather than specialisations

I plan that my first city will be a trial city to try out all the features not in the first two betas. Then I want to build a education/high tech city.

My first city will be just a city to test all the features. Ruining it will be certain.

I myself am a big lover of emergencies, clean energie and organisation and finance so. Trying to combine that.

My first city will probably be education-based. Once I'm sure traffic is working all right, I'll probably add in some casinos. The major problem here is crime, obviously. I tried a gambling city in Beta 3 and had a rampaging crime problem because my streets were so overcrowded. Of course, I didn't have much in the way of education in B3, so I'm sure that didn't help. Smarter citizens are less likely to commit crimes, right?

Maxis has said they set hard caps for the maximum and minimum any item on the world market can cost, but other than that, they're going to just let supply and demand run it.

The thread's topic is "first city"... Doesn't mean I won't have dirtier projects in other cities in the region. :)

Most likely I'll just go freestyle. But I am a fan of industrial cities, so I guess that'll be my second one!

I'm thinking of doing a city based around commerce. So pretty much shopping centers, office buildings, etc with a bit of residential areas.

I'm likely to go in whatever direction pulls at the time while I get used to what's what but I'm leaning towards industrial with the aim of getting HT established or I may start mining along with dirty industry instead and have a horribly polluted mess on my hands.  :P
