Am I the only one who feels like we shouldn't have such a big city after 1 hour?  SC4 you'd never have a city this large in 1 hour.

Well making a city of that size in a hour looks great after sitting and waiting for 5 hours to download their file for closed beta 2. Took 2 hours just to go from 10 to 17 and now been sitting at 24 for 3 hours and I ma still downloading this monster of a file! LOL /cry

What scares me is that map is complete, sure you can increase density maybe do a bit of redesign here and there. But that maps done. I imagine even the biggest region maps are gonna be filled out pretty fast. At that point, what are you to do? Maybe a few tweeks? stare at your traffic?

Couldn't agree more Sun.  Guess we have to wait for an official expansion that we'll have to pay for increasing map size.

jlt, EA's servers probably just suck...nothing to do with file size.

I wouldn't be too concerned at this stage. Remember this isn't the full version of the software.

Just a thought, but maybe the growth rate has been accelerated for demonstration purposes. This would make sense, as not a lot can be done in a one hour time frame.

Curious with that high demand of residential those single family homes along some of your larger roads didnt develop into larger structures.

For some reason land value showed quite low on those areas. I think this was due to wind carrying some pollution over there.

Didn't know you are allowed to share pictures from the beta? Confused.

It's kinda worrying how small it all actually is. And I am still confused about the update from low to high progress.

From what I make about it, Zone density maximum is purely based on road size. I suppose that can make some sense.

As to the density that does develop, it seems like its purely based on a simple land value + demand type structure. At least thats what it appears to be by what the guy has said and how his city develped. Makes sense for medium and high wealth. Makes little sense for low wealth, as it seems like this system prevents the high density low income housing near industry that youd expect. I guess if you want a major industry type "city", you'll have to develop a residential area on another map not downwind.

I think they're not allowed to post them (unless EA didn't have it written in between the lines that it was not allowed). This thread might be taken down and locked if the former was the case.

The upgrade from low to high density you mean?

    I'm not on twitter.

I find it amazing that the city blocks can be completely filled in an hour.

Oh well, back to Boomtown development.

Buggi, I'm a graphic designer. Really curious as to what you are doing and your plans. I'm tempted to start putting a dev team together for Unity3D to build a real city sim. Maybe we should talk a bit.

check out my Boomtown group, it has an immense amount of discussion as well as a thread for my Design Document.

I'm already in the process of creating a corporate entity, trademark, and budget for the development. If you want to pool resources I'd be happy to talk. PM me if you feel the need for privacy.

I have cities that size in under 30 minutes in SC4...  Then again I use a lot of mods!  :P

Keep in mind a full city in 2013 is only like 8 blocks by 8 blocks..... If you were to paste that "city" into SC4 it would only be a very small section. Just look and count how many houses / buildings there are from one end to the other.

Frankly, to get a city like that you have play on cheetah speed the entire time and know exactly what you want to do from the second you start playing.

also, people know they only have an hour and take out lots of bank loans to build really fast since they know they don't have to pay them back.

in an actual game, you will want to play much slower so you can plan ahead, make sure you have proper utility coverage and play around with the specializations.

It would not surprise me to find out that the cities in the screen shots above had all kinds of fire, police or health care issues.  Just because he filled in all the space does not mean its a well run city (er...town...er village...whatever...)

I am afraid to talk too much about my beta experience, but, I will say that with my play style I was unable to fill up the city square in the hour limit.  I like to plan ahead, be cautious, make sure utilities have proper coverage before expanding.  I could have easily played my first city all day long and not wished for more space (eventually, yes I would have wanted to expand because I do agree the size is too small).

I'm not sure how to upload an image (and I have no where to host it), but I just finished a game and ended with 77,278 population, with no current issues.  I never built a school, but max expanded ever other thing (fire, police, health, etc..) and played on Cheeta speed (which I hate, but you kinda have to to get anywhere in beta).  My biggest issue is creating jobs for people.  I have no room to expand.  I guess that's where muli-city play comes in.

I'm new to this series and I find it very simple, although I'm sure once you start to get some high pops things will get difficult.

I'll see if I can get my screen shot up somewhere so you can see the density.  I had almost everything at full medium density.

I've found it pretty easy to fill up the city tile in the hour, get decent utility coverage, and make a buttonne of money in the process. Even when building cities at a snails pace, the tile fills up rather rapidly, especially when not building on a grid road layout, building on curved roads is highly inefficient and can leave a lot of empty space.

For those complaining about city size, you gotta realize this game isn't about filling the map up.  The game STARTS when you fill the map up, unlike SC4 where when you filled it up it was over.  Every one of those shots, it felt like I was just getting into it when the Beta ended.  There is so much more to do even after the map is full, especially when the rest of the content is unlocked.
