...And that there's the entire city tile.

That's only the main street... the first picture in the series shows the city in almost its entirety though.

In the fire engine video can you stop it from doing that U-turn ... first one turned left then U-turned when the other one turned to the right ? Possible path finding mistake ??

I'm not sure what happened in that video...

There is an extraneous AI path on streets which permits U turns at junctions. You don't see it often as sims rarely want to perform U turns, but it is possible. I would post it to the beta forum but I no longer have access

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

Sure hope no one at CSX reads that twitter feed, that locomotive design rips off heavily from good ole' Chessie. Getting back on topic I'm still liking these images, they look so "real".

That grass, vegetation and foliage is insane! Very appealing to the eye!

This one really reminds me of SimCity 2000...

Same here. The colors are almost exactly the same!

That last screenshot looks like they used the "Juicy" SIMstagram filter. Some of these screenshots look very beautiful.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I wish people would quote the twitter comment that goes with these shots.

That is the Vibrant filter.

My guess is pathfinder found two paths identical in length/cost and picked either one at random. That or the u-turn did not count as an extra cost to the path when it should have =/

The screenshots look great! At first while scrolling through this thread I was scared there was "too much color" in the game. I forgot who posted it originally, but the "juicy" filter looks too over the top. Some of the other ones with colder or hotter temperatures, or hell, even the sepia one look amazing! All the ones that have slightly less color, giving it a gloomy image really make these cities jump into realism and avoid the cartoony feel altogether. Great job with that regard!

Exactly. I was among the people that thought that they were going to expand the Region options so that multiple people could play contiguous cities and I was WORRIED about that. Because what if someone had terrible crime or pollution? That would affect my city in a very negative way. It never even crossed my mind that they would be taking a step back words with regions.

Problem though, is that it's exactly the way real-life cities act. Look at Beverly Hills and Hollywood for example, the two are right next to eachother in real life. Beverly Hills used to be a better neighborhood in the past, but the homeless, drug problems, and party-habits of Hollywood began to bleed into Beverly Hills overtime. Crime rates are waaay higher there now as opposed to 20 years ago. It's perfectly normal. Now LA's better neighbors are even further away from the city center (white-flight never ends apparently).

I'm sure Manhattan's little districts all have the same problem. One neighborhood's problems or delights would bleed back and forth between each other. I'm sure you can think of plenty examples in your local area where this is in fact verrry true. Real neighbors learn to cooperate with each other and solve their problems together so that they themselves aren't dragged down as well.

For all those complaining about the empty dead grass space space between cities being unrealistic. Remember Simcity 4 cities floated in the middle of space. Pollution and crime did not spread each city even though they were contiguous.

That's the way earlier games were always done with Maxis, including all the SimCity editions before SC4 and even all the Sims games up until they did away with it halfway into the Sims 2. They didn't upgrade those features in SC4 compared to past games (despite having your own region) because they just stuck with the previous model to make the game less complex (i.e. a coal factories pollution bleeding over 3 cities in every direction).

This time around they upgraded the idea of having cities interact far more than just sharing utilites and transportation, but at a price... There is no "next door neighbor" anymore, there's not even ANY next door neighbors at all! No Man's Land is everywhere! It's like taking the Build Mode out of the Sims (along with making the neighborhood completely unchangable). I'd rather have the old model back of cities not bleeding anything into each other over this uneditable region with patches of city here and there. Some of us feel quite cheated right now, others are raging hardcore, and still others straight-flat refuse to buy the game.

One of the greatest things about SC4 was coming out of a city and sitting there in front of your screen watching your metropolis. Watching the roads, the planes, the mountains, rivers... the downtown core, the midurbs surrounding it, and the suburbs on the outskirts, with an expanse of farmland beyond, and all the unclaimed nature far beyond that. 20-30 minutes each time, just contemplating, thinking, how awesome it all looks from up there. The colossal cherry to top all of it was listening to this:

It was all so jaw-dropping, so life-inspiring, so beautiful, so flabbergasting and mind-boggoling... But, as to why they chose to take this magic out of the new SimCity, what their reasoning was behind this folly, is truly and utterly beyond me.

WOW WOW WOW!!! Brilliant!

I think I'm having a heatattack

Those bloody oil companies lol... Looks great!

Also, the abandoned-city pictures earlier on look soooo dark... Wow, I'm totally going to take mad advantage of that and build an entire poor/post-apoctalyptic megalopolis of a region when I get the chance (you know, when they do something about "No Man's Land" in between the cities).

We experimented a lot with this. It's what we started with. The (extremely) frustrating reality was that if cities sit right up next to each other, then they either need to be simulated for real, or they look lifeless. Neither was acceptable. If we simulated them for real, then we would have to make the cities ridiculously small. (We are giving the CPU a crazy workout with the sim!) We pounded on it for a long time, but in the end the best solution was to push the cities just a bit apart.

^from the SimCity Forums, a response to the dreaded patches of No Man's Land...

Of course they could've done something about it. Anything! Anything but leave it like that! They should've made the neighboring cities lifeless! How many people are even on the development team? Haven't they ever played an RTS empire-building game? Haven't they seen what they do to avoid these problems? It's called the Fog-of-War effect! You leave the other cities somewhat-darkened with no visible actions or literally in a fog! The Sims 2 dealt very nice with this... Everything outside of the main house was nothing more than a background, and that's the way it should be! But, leaving it like this is super painful for any city-building lovers!

Don't they realize that most people, whom the developers are trying to target the game towards, don't care about city-building? Those people were only interested in the live-mode from the Sims and nothing more (you know, everyday type of things). Ultimately 80% of the people who would potentially buy this game are people who have already played city-building games (in particular SC4 fans). Maxis is going to lose so much if they don't fix that asap.

It does look a tad bigger, maybe because it is undeveloped.

Ocean tweeted this a while ago

Maybe they'll be updating the size of the maps later on?

Okay, that actually gives me a lot of hope that they're listening and are planning on doing something. I doubt they want to lose half of the devoted SC4 fans. Plus, I'm sure the developers have seen the polls for "Would you buy the new SimCity"

/endrant

On a better note, most pictures look great!

The screens do look really good and get me excited... untill I see those "city overviews" and "region overviews" and then my dream gets shattered again. I actually kinda like the cartoony style, at least I have no problems with it. The art design speaks to me, it feels fresh and if they would've come with SC4 style eveyone would've been disappointed also. Just fix those issues almost everyone has with it and you've got a winner.

Somehow, if I see this, I get the feeling it's a connection between Cities XL and SiMCity Societies.

The baseball diamond looks great, and I love how the basketball court can be expanded with modules of MORE courts!

When you open the edit mode of a park, you actually have any park available as a module. So you can have a combination of any park you wish.

Where you guys finding the "SimCity: This or That" pictures from? Anytime I see one of those, my hope just hangs wide open for several seconds. Links please? :)

Wait, what? That's amazing!!! It was kind of bothersome that all parks would look exacty the same (depending of their three sizes) in previous games. This is definitely a step up!

Those rural landscapes... just amazing

Too bad it'll be the only rurality we'll get in the game... No farms, no mountains, no mesas, no plateaus, no nothing
