I would survive the small tiles but I cannot survive the empty space between the villages, it looks very ugly and not citiesh at all.

2 km x 2 km is roughly the size of a medium city tile in SC4, right? I don't understand the issue...

yes but I am not sure about everyone else but I only used medium tiles for downtown areas with a inner ring road then the tiles surrounding it would be farms and the suburbs / industrial areas, now you cannot build an entire city with inner and outer ring roads with that medium size let alone the fact that in my entire life I have never seen a city that has soooooo many gaps in it like the new simcity, Which would also explain why rapid transport has been completely removed...

What annoys me more than anything is simcity has created a game they hope attracts the old simcity 4 audience but how can they when the removed elements from the game instead of adding? I play simcity becuase I am free to do what I want with limitless space (almost :P ) but it also was literally 50% for transport reasons... now I do like this new simcity but I do not support gridded cities with diagagonal like corners, square city sizes and a city that has highrise buildings in a area smaller than my hometime of some 10,000 people...

It needs some serious work being done to it.... and the map size is without a doubt, too small...

Weren't Mediums in SC4 2 miles on a side?  Or was it really KMs?  All I can say is that the city size I'm seeing in the Simcity 2013 videos look smaller than the old mediums.  It reminds me of the Simcity 2000 or Simcity Classic city size, pretty disappointing!

I think you may be right there, although one of their lead designers has posted videos on youtube (I can get you links if you want) showing his cities which are on absolutely huge maps...

I can confirm that after speaking with Ocean Quigley there WILL be larger maps, but NOT on the shipping date and more likely as an expansion or download!!

Great news for all I hope!!

@oceanquigley Thank you, Can I pain you with a question? I am sure you have already been asked? Are you considering creating larger maps?

@JamesFunchal Yes, but not at ship time.

-------------

Is this the post you are referring to?

So the previous rumors about Glassbox not being powerful enough to simulate bigger maps are not true...

Ocean has already posted a video of him on a larger map, you need to go onto his youtube channel to see it for real instead of listening to rummors...

That would be excellent - perhaps for the beta they're holding down the city size to cut down on PC performance problems.

This is indeed a step forward. However, there's a difference between the words 'considered' and 'confirmed'.

I'm sure lots of testing will still need to be done first. Such as to determine their compatibility with the simulation engine.

I'm sitting here staring at his channel not seeing anything about larger maps.

And that video above is no proof of anything. He doesn't say "testing out larger map" anywhere.

Yes but it doesnt take 6 minutes to travel around a 2km-2km map does it!!?? also note the shear amount of ridges, bridges and 2 towns he passes... There is also another video of the same area but from the cars perspective...

You just need to look...

He's running it at the slowest simulation and the track he made has a lot of turns. Also, you can see a few minutes in that the train reached the starting point again (just looks different because me moved the camera around a few times).

Yep but look in the background where it is sometimes blured you clearly see that the map continues on into the distance of which we see 2 towns...

Those train crossings have stoplights.

We know. Ocean has already commented on his twitter that this is not how the game will ship. Trains will not stop for cars and there will be the traditional RR crossing arms rather than stop lights.

If we're talking about traveling the perimeter, no. It wouldn't take 6 minutes. But this train isn't traveling the perimeter. It's looping back and forth and back again. There are several instances in the video where the train travels right by parts of the track it has already traveled on. There's not a whole lot of room left for zoning a city around all the rail tracks placed in here.

But even with that said, the tile size could be slightly larger than 2km x 2km. But that doesn't mean it's a tile size that will be available to users. He's in debug mode, as he is for all the other videos. That's how he gets coal trains and passenger trains just going around this track that doesn't connect to any stations or anything. He just built a system of rails and cheated in some trains on those rails and then followed the trains with the video recording.

He's in debug mode for that, so there's no reason to believe that debug mode doesn't also allow him a terrain editor and a large tile to work with. In fact, it's pretty reasonable to assume that he is working on a drastically larger tile size because the glassbox engine isn't simulating anything in this city... it's just a train... following a track... in the only direction it can.

1) Trains NEVER stop for at-grade train intersections with roads. Why? Because trains can't break fast: trains have to brake for like a mile to stop when they are at full speed...

2) The cars go ridiculously fast in that video like 400 km/h / 250 mph! That's just way beyond my suspension of disbelief...

Yep well we dont actually no if its a larger map or not although hense the fact you see it continue of into the far distance with other towns linked via means that isnt the stupid small highway I presume it IS a larger map and its remaining on his personal channel becuase Maxis do not want to publish it until they announce larger maps...  simple... And why we are discussing this I dont actually know...

Its a bug they havent fixed it yet...
