Please, please, please don't include pictures in a quote! It really clogs up the thread. Just the username and text is plenty to identify the post you're quoting. Anyway, that's a beastly interchange, freshballin.

when I try that, it comes up with an error.

It is indeed a mod he's using.

Avenue tunnels use a portal model very similar to the GMHW one, while OWR tunnels use a portal model very similar to the Road one.

It's a simple height problem, Avenue tunnels are (I think) 7m high to make the MHW network look a little less out-of-scale, while Road tunnels are 15m high, once again to make them look a little less out-of-scale.

What his Slope Mod is doing is changing the height of the Avenue portal to 15m, so it matches the height of the OWR portals according to the game (though the old 7m model is still used).

Three interchanges on this picture:

blackthorntruckramp.jpg

Left to right: main interchange, truck ramp to facilitate a freight connection from the mainline highway and a minor interchange with a through-road (not on screen)

I'm thinking the truck ramp's gonna get demolished in the end... but not yet.

NTM: Looks pretty good! I'd personally add smooth curves and type C/D ramps, but, one step at a time!

Dan: Very nicely done! Interesting way to accomodate the diagonal avenue as well, and the truck ramp should stay!

Deep urban left hand exit interchange

ravenna-mar._1__1881300919066.png

And a very strange interchange... due to the nature of the highways. The C/D highway is actually a tolled highway nested within a regular highway, and I had to provide full access to both (including free to toll)

kaoi-jan._7__001301320252.png

If you'll notice, it's actually 2 interleaved trumpets with 2 full Y's (for the toll access) and an expanded windmill/turbine interchange on the outside.

Blue Lightning, that second interchange looks like a driver's nightmare :P

Unbelievable that you're able to make such complex interchanges, I can only dream of being as good as you ;)

I gotta say, that 2nd one sure isn't common to see in rural areas. We ever gonna see a road geekery on this intersection?

Bump. I am amazed by the fact that some people don't use smooth curves. They look so much better with them.

- Nice interchange nathanmayor!

- Here's another interchange from my region based off of Greater Los Angeles. For those familiar with the area, it's Devonshire St. and the 405 Frwy. in Mission Hills. Just to note: the first and third images were taken facing north. The others south. Hope you all like it! :)

I think that Freshballin has just schooled us all in how to apply eye candy to the RHW!

For the benefit of those at home, what mods are you using for all of that eyecandy?

The steep gradients are very unrealistic, but that is a very clever way to make a 5 way interchange.

@asteconn. Thanks! I used the following mods: Jeronij's Modern Cement Walls by Jeronij, LRM Plopable Streetlights 01by MRTNRLN, CPT Italia Tree Mod by Cycledogg, fonzyfb73's Sign Packs, and RHW Lights and Barriers by Xyloxadoria.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Freshballin has got the RHW mastered. I've only seen two of your interchanges, but I think they are by far the best of all the ones I've seen.

Just one interchange today. I've changed the highway off to the right a little (it was a little too close to the edge for the next city over), but the main part is still the same.

cliffinterchange1.jpg

And further out (aren't small tiles with limited space fun?)

cliffinterchange2.jpg

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.

Maarten, where did you get the demo for cityscape? PixelActive has been taken over by some other company and I can't find the demo anymore.

Well, since I'm bored: I should note, I make intersections as tight as I can. I don't like a lot of wasted space.

I-36 Exit 22A&B: I-436E Bypass(Left) / I-136E Downtown(Right)

intersection4.png

I-36 Exit 25A&B: SR201 Rosham Ave

intersection3.png

(Built like this: intersection31.png)

I-36 Exit 26A&B: Central River Pkwy

intersection2.png

I-36 Exit 30A&B: SR1 Rask Island Hwy / SR336 International Airport

intersection1.png

(There's no entrance from SR1 to SR336 save for the feeder ramp at the top via a side street)

Great pictures, everyone!

This is a rather simple interchange I made yesterday. I guess it's called a half-trumpet..? It's not as complex and fancy as many of the above, yet I like the simplicity of it.

Freshballin ----- This notation does in no way mean to cast aspersions on a fellow simtropian resident creation. and I have to admit it is a well thought out and dramatic creation of a freeway to freeway interchange ... I sorry but it hardly looks anything like the 118 - 405 interchange... recreating any LA interchange is just not possible with the limited functionality of RHW. I think someone did do a very real interpretation of the 10 and 405.

7 pictures from CityScape why Maxis Highways are bad and vastly underscaled (and yes, these interchanges are on the same scale as the Maxis Highway Interchanges):

Sharp curves!

maxiscloverleaf01.jpg

The interchange doesn't handle traffic very well...

maxiscloverleaf02.jpg

Look at the slopes at the overpass! And the curves of the ramps!

maxiscloverleaf04.jpg

Steeeeeeep overpass!

maxiscloverleaf05.jpg

The Maxis Diamond interchange looks clogged up...

maxiscloverleaf06.jpg

And really tight and steep!

maxiscloverleaf07.jpg

Yep, also traffic problems here...

maxiscloverleaf08.jpg

I hope you enjoyed my presentation!

Best,

Maarten

@Maarten: That's a great presentation. If I hadn't moved away from the Maxis highways a long time ago, your pictures would've gotten me onto better thoughts. Nice!

@Marten: Wow. I initially shyed away from the RHW because I tried to convert existing Maxis Hwy to RHW, but found it didn't work because I had made in unrealistically small.

I set a minimum distance of 500m (32 tiles) between Highway interchanges in urban areas and 1km (64 tiles) in rural areas. Do you think this is realistic? What do you do?

What I normally do is one intersection per major road or estate access point.

Almost all avenues crossing my motorways have at least full diamond interchanges.

As my cities get more dense, I usually pack more interchanges in, or straight-out degrade motorways to Avenues and provide a bypass of some sort.
