I love looking at everyone's pictures here for inspiration.

What do you all think of this, will it work?

Add some smooth curves and accel/decel lanes too

First post :)

There are many nice interchanges in this thread, and so I thought I might share an attempt of mine.

I've dedicated one of my cities to become "testing city" for new interchange designs. Sorry for the ugly cliff, but I'm no real RHW expert and so I focused on getting this thing done in the first place. It's very similar to an interchange Sunv posted on Page 72 (keyword greater Toronto area). This time one of the highways is climbing a hill; this was also the main reason why I tried to build something akin to Sunv's interchange. I've tried to use as many smooth curves, FlexFly curves and so on as possible; however sometimes the game won't let me use them.

Hello everyone.

I came back recently to SC4 after few months break with new region, new NAM etc.

I want to show You my first big interchange (nothing fancy as I'm getting used to new nam version), hoping that I did good enough despite I'm still working to improve it.

So, here it is :)

An interchange between two high-speed freeways that i've been working on.

Somewhat based on this interchange in Syracuse.

Data 7: Very nice! Do you have a higher res version anywhere? I'd love to see that in detail!

I head that interchange is starting to fall apart :P

Specially for Haljackey I played with my skills in Paint program :)

It seems like a good post to ask - why am I missing median in NWM AVE-6? and FAR ONW on the left in first pic?

    click

    click

    click

and a bonus - what to do with this heavy north south traffic when there is still a half tile to fill and more adjacent tiles? Not to mention entrance to the highway (big city on right)

    Hey guys,

Loving this thread... I'm so excited to show mine, that I had to log in remotely to take the snapshot :)

Here is a main RHW6 that bypasses the outskirts of main Downtown Core. There are two interchanges to a singular sunken Downtown Loop. Each one is custom. This is the one that took me a great deal of time. I didn't follow any rules.

Very nice! I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but how did you get those smooth curves for the elevated segments?

    ---

Here's an interchange I just built today. It's on top of the location of the first complete RHW interchange I built, which was between the RHW-2 that comes in from the top of the picture and exits at the lower left and another RHW-2, which now enters the picture as one of the RHW-4 roadways on the right and originally terminated at the other RHW-2.

    9719209145_201d9bf0ab_c.jpg

The impetus for the construction of the new interchange was the completion of a new RHW-6S in the regional capital, which enters the picture on the left. The original connection to the capital, where the RHW-2 transitions into an important thoroughfare, was preserved and incorporated into the interchange.

    9719209629_2e291cb1ec_c.jpg

The RHW-4 in this picture connects at the top of the picture to the right side of the first picture. It was built out until just beyond the far edge of the pleasant historical suburban community of Watertown since the trunk road here serves as the primary connector between all of the towns of the western quarter of the region on one side, and the main cities and everything else on the other. However funding was not forthcoming to build anymore interchanges, so the new divided highway was designed after the bypass routes around many major Canadian and Latin American cities, with several intersections but the possibility for grade separation in the future.

Finally got this done. Some form of a spaghettified T-Interchange with access to the highways from level streets. Yes, I forgot the dang grid.

I believe you have to install the Maxis Highway Override (Project Symphony); I think they simply converted the existing MHW smooth curves and made them match the RHW textures and such, which is why RHW doesn't have them (apparently modeling transit networks is incredibly hard due to poly count limitations).

Unfortunately I don't really want PS, so I have to go w/o the smooth el-curves.

Sort of. It's not a reskin per se, but rather utilises the Maxis Highway network in a way that makes it connectable with the regular RHW. It won't reskin interchanges, but rather you can construct your own modular ones (in RHW fashion), although there are a few roundabout prefab interchanges you can utilise.

A lot of stuff seems a little overcomplicated; the MIS that goes between the ponds for example could be pulled off a little more "elegantly" by branching it off parallel to the highway it comes out of, then putting it across both sides of the highway, bringing it back down, parallel to the highway and merging it in again. Don't know if I'm any good at explaining what I mean, but basically, it doesn't need to do two sharp right turns and one sharp left if it just went over the highway ahead of it with a 90° FlexFly arrangement.

There is insufficient space on this small tile for that arrangement.

That's a pretty good point, although I still think it would be a more efficient way to tie things up. Oh well. :)

It won't reskin interchanges, but rather you can construct your own modular ones (in RHW fashion), although there are a few roundabout prefab interchanges you can utilise.

Indeed. I should have been more specific. The curve models (I thought) were reskinned. The rest is a complete overhaul utilizing Maxis' existing transit network. Probably the only thing really left intact and untouched is the ability to draw a two-tile wide highway without starters (but it's a whole different kind of highway). So to be sure they spent quite a bit of time and thought on the project.

But yeah, all your MHW interchanges are incompatible with PS (they will work still, but they won't align properly and you'll have to rebuild all the interchanges). Which is one reason why I still have MHW installed instead of PS--I've got a bunch of existing MHW that would be murderous to try to replace with PS or RHW (w/o completely renovating the city tile).

    Very nice work everyone!

    Here's a few I've been tinkering with.

    Click pics for full size!

I left room to one day widen the avenue in this diamond interchange to an ave-6. Traffic volumes have risen to the point that it had to be done.

Here's mine temporary clover in area under construction, want to see how things will develop and then rebuild it if necessary. I'm gonna rebuild it anyway due to improvements on E-W main RHW ;)

Here is a low-capacity interchange between HWY-1 and Coastal Parkway, in the city of Byner in Eastern Mitron, my country. This is a rather low traffic interchange, barring the eastbound traffic to the new metropolis I've been working on. I'm still finishing up the overpasses of the normal roads, and there's not trees everywhere because it's supposed to have just been constructed so they haven't planted trees yet. :P Enjoy! Critique & opinions wanted!

Also, does anyone know how I could fix that weird glitch by the flyover?

I've tried bulldozing it, but nothing happens. It's not a physical piece either. It's like a visual glitch. I've also exited and came back to the city; but it still stays there. It's weird like that.

Have you tried bulldozing the entire area around it? Seems odd how you cant get rid of it.

I've been making a freeway (east-west) to expressway (north-south) interchange for my SC4 video series. As soon as I finished I realized I could have done this to eliminate the weaving issues.

    hgnMiWN.jpg

Won't be for a bit however as I'm eagerly awaiting GTA V. The highways/interchanges in it look great as well!

By the way, I define a freeway as needing accel/decel lanes and smooth curves (high design speed) whereas an expressway can have short merge space and sharper curves (slower design speed). Both are grade-separated however, hence the need for a complicated interchange.
