McDuell: Nice interchanges. I especially like that turbine. I believe it is more compact than your previous turbine.

I also have one to show, this one is a hybrid roundabout/parclo/diamond interchange at a freeway terminus:

1-90.jpg

It may take long to load as it is more than 800 KB in size.

Fantastic interchanges McDuell/Patricius Maximus 44.gif

Here is something I came up with while beeing sick the whole weekend.

Click images for full resolution (1680x1050)

Simple Y-split

Diagonal-Split1.jpg

Diagonal-Split2.jpg

This is (I think) a Fused Trumpet, that took a long time, many re-tries and alot of cursing before I was happy with it.

Loop one...

Loop two...

Entire interchange...

Thank you all, especially for liking my turbine interchange 1.gif.

Haljackey:

I'm Swiss; how could I possibly not like tunnels ? (Switzerland: the land of holey cheeses and mountains) 3.gif.

Actually, I'd love to exchange at least some of the tunnnels with MIS ramps, but most of the time there is no other solution (yet), especially when dealing with diagonal interchange types. The teasers I've seen at SC4D from Tarkus give me great hope for the future though 2.gif.

Patricius Maximus:

I'm not so sure about this one being the smaller. When I compare both images the first one actually looks more compact to me (if this is the one you mentioned).

Comparison:

Turbine-22Feb021213983515.jpgic_090317-8Jan001237326431.jpg

I also like the way your RHW terminus changing to an Avenue going to the suburbs after the roundabout. Nice work.

buildsolid:

I second Patricius Maximus here: Nice usage of the OWR with the 6C. Also about the weaving part being very short: in reality I'd expect some accidents here. On the other hand: such interchanges do exist. Here is an example from Google Earth (6°27'45''N, 3°25'07''E, an interchange in Lagos, Nigeria):

3-way_weaving_Lagos.jpg

If the through-way isn't a high class highway, then the weaving can be eliminated by putting a traffic signal where the branches join, as in the example below.

Autobahnanschluss_Dbendorf.jpg

This interchange is about 2km away from my home. I even started a recreation of this interchange a while ago (it's bigger than what can be seen here 2.gif

Owaen:

Awesome work with both interchanges! I like the symmetry of the splitting part of your Y. And I sympathize with you on the cursing and redoing part as I know this all too well from my own experiences 15.gif.

Generally, I have more difficulties with building rotation- and point-symmetric interchanges in comparison to mirror- and axis-symmetric interchanges.

Btw: did I say that I like your fused trumpet? 19.gif

The next picture is an interchange which I did some time ago (pre-RHW 3 era). This is a mix of several networks together: Maxis highway meets RHW meets Avenue. Unfortunately, the transition from EHW to raised Avenue was necessary, otherwise it wouldn't have been possible to do the tight turns at the underpasses.

NeueStadt-16Mai001228061168.jpg

As always: Have fun 9.gif

EDIT: (fixed link)

Patricius Maximus: I was astonished about the size of the older turbine as well. Never thought that it had such a small footprint.

McDuell: Nice little "retro-spective" there 2.gif. I also like how functionalistic it is, the idea of having two motorways, and a railway system in the middle. Quite the classic example of how roads were planned back in the days (thinking of the start of the social-liberalistic era of planning).

T - Railway

An example of this would be the area of Groruddalen with it's 90,000 inhabitants outside of Oslo (an area north of the CBD consisting mainly of apartmentblock's from the 60's and 70's)

And the overview:

grorud.jpg

Of course, the first example of H-T-H, is just a simplification, but these images show how it might look in reality. I want to add that the terrain in this area can be quite steep and both hard and expensive to plan and build.

take care,

This one is different than most of the ones on here, but it works good, takes full advantage of the avenue roundabouts, and has no stoplights 4.gif

I've made a compact turbine interchange to replace a rather overused volleyball interchange:

1-93.jpg

And here is a traffic query diagram:

2-73.jpg

I have replicated this interchange in another area, replacing a cloverstack interchange. The appeal of this interchange, at least for me, is that it is smaller than others and has a high capacity.

Just fooling around today and came up with this nifty little interchange. It is designed to serve the parallel coast road at the same time as providing the overpass road (middle) with access to the highway, so I merged some lanes and came up with this:

Middlebury-Nov10031238776122.png

Here is a back view:

Middlebury-Nov10031238776122.png

I realize that there are sharp curves on the entrance/exit ramps, but it was being build against a ridge hugging the coast. This is my first post here (on this forum), so comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mapmaker89: Wow, that's a really steep interchange. First, I would reccomend obtaining a slope mod, and secondly, I reccomend changing it to a paperclip interchange (scroll to the bottom of the page). I think it will fit well there.

Patricius Maximus - Thanks for your input. I took your suggestion and downloaded a slope mod as well as convert the interchange into a paperclip (I started from scratch and didn't modify the original one.)

This is the best paperclip I could do. I think it matches the pic diagram very well:

Paperclip-Oct22001238792402.png

As always, comments and suggestions are very welcome. I look forward to trying to create interchanges in the future.

art128:

Thank you 1.gif. That turbine actually was among the early stages of my RHW (2.0) experiments.

ExiL3:

I haven't given much thought about this fact initially when I built that interchange. Thank you for the insight and the example. Nice skyline with those midrises mixed with much greenery. According to the street layout in the map, the terrain indeed seems to be quite irregular and hilly.

doorknob60:

This is quite a road hub you have here, 8 directions! Extremely compact for such an interchange though; good work.

Picture from 6/6/06 2.gif ? (Avenue roundabouts made their appearance in June 2007, so there must be something wrong with your computer 3.gif

Patricius Maximus:

Fantastic compact turbine variant! I especially like that it is non-symmetric. Excellent work, as always 19.gif.

mapmaker89:

This is a difficult terrain for RHW. However, i support Patricius Maximus about a slope mod here. But I personally would use a trumpet interchange here. It does solve the weaving problem and you won't run into the problem to build the second 180° turn right at the waterfront.

The paperclip in your next post is great work! 19.gif.

sqiddster:

Nice and compact. If you prolong the tunnel a bit, you may smoothen the sharp turns in the east-west connector roads. The north-south roads are fine though.

asd195:

The first picture has some very bumpy tunnel entrances. I'd strongly recommend a slope mod here. Also the two sharp turns might be smoothend out. I'm not so sure about the functionality of the hole right before the overpass. Other than that, the interchange should work fine.

In the second picture you seem to have got carried away a bit 2.gif. I've analyzed the whole interchange, and I found out that there is one direction which cannt be reached. In the picture below (as always: click to enlarge), all straight ways are green, the right turns blue, and the red lines depict the left turns. The MIS at (1) soesn't serve a purpose right now as the only way you can go is straight in the end. I think that this should have been the left turn ramp. At (2), the at-grade transition seems quite abrupt in plain terrain.

Download_Connection-Nov.jpg

Btw: I've never realized the existence of your rank here before (Area). I wonder if it's related with your number of posts (Area 5.2 anyone) ? 2.gif

MemberLabel_Area.jpg

Some stuff from me. Sorry, most of them aren't beautified, as they are again 'quick and dirty' realizations of sudden creationism. I hope you'll like them anyway:

This is another 'oldie' which has been in my pics folder for some time. Notice the tunnels right beside the avenue, without the usual one-tile space between the roads:

Multihighway-29Apr001229169663.jpg

The next three pictures all involve Maxis highways. These are mainly experiments, thus no flora et al.

This is a full 4-way interchange, first try (with some evil weaving):

hwy_090401-19Jan001238936047.jpg

Second try, with 2 parallel highways (no weaving, but curved ramps):

hwy_090401-15Jan001238883924.jpg

Third try, with ortho-diagonal highway:

test_090315-19Jan001237586792.jpg

A diverged diamond interchange with RHW. The diverging road is of avenue class, thus the possibility of at-grade crossing.

ic_090301-6Jan001238959866.jpg

MIS spaghetti soup. This is part of a much bigger interchange (, which won't be showed in this post yet 3.gif

ic_090216-2Feb001238620729.jpg

The diverged diamond led me (once again) to the idea of a 'double diverged' full interchange, this time with RHW (last time I've done it with Avenues). I don't know if this type really has a name, so I stick to 'double diverged':

ic_090405-6Jan001238935397.jpg

Here is a closeup of the diagonal overpass part with the drawpaths cheat activated. It's fully functional, and UDI cars pass through as well.

ic_090405-24Jan001238935724.jpg

I've one more to show. An ortho-diagonal style interchange:

ic_090404-9Jan001238882330.jpg

That all folks. (At least for today 2.gif

As always: have fun 9.gif

Fantastic compact turbine variant! I especially like that it is non-symmetric. Excellent work, as always 19.gif.quote>

Well, it had to be non-symmetric to fit into the compact space. Thanks.

I will respond to each interchange in the order of appearance.

1: Hmm, an oldie? An interesting setup.

2: Evil weaving 14.gif.

3: A better variation, although I'd prefer something like a fully-grade separated paperclip setup, or even a squashed turbine or cloverstack. I'll have to try how to figure out making something like that.

4: Again, looking better. It looks kind of like a squashed stack.

5: Ah, a diverging diamond. I tried that once in the Patrician Showcase, but your results look better (I used OWR and RHW 2.0). Wouldn't be interesting to see a three-level diverging diamond. Hmm...

6: An interesting interchange, and one that has actually been done in real life.

7: It looks good, and could prove useful.

McDuell: "Picture from 6/6/06 ? (Avenue roundabouts made their appearance in June 2007, so there must be something wrong with your computer"

You never know, in SimCity 4 '06 could mean 4006, since it's the sequel to SC 3000, don't come to quick conclusions 3.gif

(....you do realize I was talking about the game time...right?)

Here's what I have for you today, an interchange linking the subarban area of what's now my largest city, B-1 (yes I'm not creative, I use a grid naming system like Excel lmao) (>540,000) to what technically isn't downtown, but "ECD" (Eastside Commercial District). I never intended ECD to become so big, but it did 3.gif It's a lot bigger than downtown, which os on the southwest if you look at the minimap thing, which ran out of space quickly.

It originally started out a simple interchange between the avenue on the west side of the hill with one way roads going over the hill and convergoing into avenues, with one way roads instead of MIS, it was a lot simpler. That's before I layed even one tile of zoning down though. After ECD became so huge, I wanted a ramp one to another road to take a load of the main avenue (the MIS ramp left exit that goes over a tinnel, that was painful to make).

Then I upgraded the whole thing to RHW, eliminating most of the avenues and OWRs. The elevated RHW-4 at the top of the hill was such a pain, because most of the time when I drew it over, it would switch the directions of the RHWs that it passed over, and I couldn't make it stop. When I tried to upgrade it it did it again, so I've decided I'm never gonna touch it again.

Then I kept adding ramps to go to the highway that goes N-S through the hill, now it's gotten pretty complicated to say the least. ~10,000 commuters pass over the hill each morning and evening, and even as RHW-4 it gets congested, but they'll have to live with that because my attempts to upgrade it to RHW-6 causes the direction switch thing to pop back up again. Anyways, that's my interchange 4.gif

Wow, I wrote like an essay about it 43.gif I'm bored lol.

Zoomed in:

Overview of area:

b1mar26271238989281.th.png

(Yeah, I know my cities are ugly and usually pretty unrealistic, I need some tips to get better at that lol)

A simple diamond in a rural area. Haven't seen many of them lately. I would reccomend changing the overpass approach to a gentle slope and the highway under it into a tunnel, for the rural "look".

Hi haljackey,

may I ask you how you managed to create these on-/offramps and transitions? Are these two highway (one ground level, one elevated) crossing? Are these transitions parts of the RHW MIS? If so, how do you combine them with the "normal" highway?

Thanks for your most appreciated advice!!
