I am still a novice at this but after an hour of placing, demolishing and replacing it finally came to me and it went together rather easy.

Who says a plain MHW Trumpet interchange has to be plain!

Lodgepole lining the route to Breezy Point, Juniper lining the route to my second commercial centre, and Subalpine Fir lining a little stretch of AVE-2 and a couple of the highway interfacing bus stops.  That little oasis inside the Trumpet is a favourite lunch-spot for local business staff, and even some picnickers, with some Valley Oak, Spruce and Madrona, Elm and Broadleaf Tree, planted in the plaza and in the margins of the basketball court.

As it happens, this is my first MHW Trumpet interchange, as I've been playing vanilla SimCity 4 for many years and never knew how much I was missing out, not having the NAM.  I'm making up for lost time now, but still not quite ready to do a full RHW interchange.  Getting there!  I do actually find the combination of RHW-4 and MHW quite useful for the tightly packed urban neighbourhoods I tend to favour.  I'll be doing a big high capacity RHW interchange at the other end of this same city tile.

You'll notice I've interfaced some of my MIS slip roads with tight OWR-2 90ºC bends, for which the 50% reduction in vehicle speed is surely very appropriate!  Those slip roads allow a U-turn off the highway to Breezy Point, because the Trumpet doesn't allow a U-turn.

5d9744e9d3b11_JamaicaBay-TrumpetInterchange.jpg.59513c458ed1815534b04ee09bd2ec1a.jpg

This is a screenshot from my Jamaica Bay city tile, which I am developing for a C$$ and C$$$ tourist-based economy, capitalising on (and carefully balancing) the "eternal commuters bug".  My interchange is pretty, to fit in with a polished tourist city image.  I don't have many mod downloads yet ... still so much to learn from the NAM alone!

Clever thinking @Naomi57 !

One recommendation for pairing Maxis highways with the Real Highway Mod is to use a re-texture mod to make the pavement's appearance more uniform. The current option available is making the Maxis Highway darker, there was a project to make the Real Highway ligher (concrete pavement) but it never reached completion.

Compact RHW-2 suburban interchanges on an island city

My latest city, Canarsie Pol, East New York, is an island city and bedroom community.  Three ferries are the only way off the island, aside from a secret underwater tunnel (for trucks only), to solve the sticky problem of trash disposal.  There's a small commercial centre clustered around each ferry terminal, which will contain most of the intercity commuters away from residential areas in the centre of the island ... I hope.

It's a Large city tile, but mostly water, so the island itself is about the size of a Small city tile.  In the past, as a long-time vanilla SimCity 4 player, I would have put a single MHW highway through the middle of it, with avenue interchanges interspersed along it's length.  This time, I wanted to try something different, because the NAM provides flexibility I'm still getting used to.

To fit in with the tourist island / bedroom community image, I've decided to avoid dual carriageways altogether, and use a single main highway of RHW-2 alone.  My past experience in traffic management tells me that I'll be pushing the capacity limits on that RHW-2, so each interchange is focused on streamlining the through traffic along that single main RHW-2 highway, with a view to making morning commutes short and sweet.

There's three compact suburban interchanges, using something like a feeder-collector model, with the red arrows pointing the direction of the typical morning commute.  There will be a YIMBY gradient on the island, with R$$$ sims on the left, R$$ in the middle, and R$ on the right.  All the spurs are there for connection to residential roads.  As a bedroom community, most of this will be zoned residential.

5d9c9d1cca750_Canarsie-InterchangesOverview.jpg.6f80b4ecc26643f85c0164b9693f78fd.jpg

These are actually my very first interchanges using RHW.* :ooh:

The rich side of town – R$$$

In this screenshot, you can see very clearly how I am optimising for their morning commute, at the expense of likely traffic jams on the way home.  Sims only get depressed (and become unemployed) in relation to their morning commute.  They don't mind so much if it takes longer to get home.

5d9ca130a110b_Canarsie-Highwealthinterchange.jpg.6de2ff7fd7d61dea5036e323cf4ed269.jpg

The middle class district – R$$

This REALLY WEIRD looking interchange, was the result of limited space for another interchange on the main RHW-2 highway, so I squished this one, kinda like a weird almost dumbbell interchange.  The overpass is RHW-2, so I've no concerns about the extra traffic along there, but I am a wee little bit concerned about those 3x3 roundabouts getting double trouble from morning traffic.  :lost:

5d9ca0bec3972_Canarsie-CentralInterchange.jpg.8c7adc7d3413f93d387e33ab5492aabb.jpg

The poor side – R$

No flowers on this side.  :sly:  I will give them trees, though!  *:ducky:

I'm pretty confident that this MIS and OWR-2 feeder layout will handle the R$ traffic really well.

5d9ca06d89dad_Canarsie-Lowwealthinterchange.jpg.9066da4be814a6632ec338e33da4fbe4.jpg

My biggest concern

This one isn't even a real interchange, just a 3x3 roundabout linking stretches of RHW-2, with MIS slip roads to keep some of the traffic off the roundabout.  I'm actually a bit worried that this won't stand up to the task of handling the traffic, close to the centre of my island.  Given my island layout, with residential in the centre, and business on the periphery, I'm hoping that most of the morning traffic will be moving away from this very weak link in my main RHW-2 highway.  I'm betting that most of the morning commute traffic in this section will be following that red arrow down the slip road.  If I'm wrong about that ... OUCH!  >.< :dead:

A point in my favour, the local ferry terminals will be the biggest draw of traffic on the island, so I think that will make the morning commute traffic patterns MUCH more predictable ... but I'm not entirely certain.

My biggest concern ... solved!

I couldn't stop thinking about my weak link above, so with the help of a RHW-2 viaduct, some bus stops, another slip road, and road connection to the R$ feeder OWR-2, all my concerns are solved.  *:thumb:

Canarsie - Central Turning Lane Interchange 2.jpg

BTW, yes, those new RHW-2 facing shops have RCI access.  Just loving those Pedmalls!  *

EDIT 10th October 2019:   Ahhh!  Those RHW-2 facing little commercial lots don't develop.  They work in that position, but they have to be facing the Pedmall, not the RHW-2!  Fixed that, and they're all better now.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

EDIT 10th October 2019:  I've finished zoning, and all the suburban roads and arterials are done.  Here's a post with a map and description of the finished result, if you'd like to see!  *:ohyes:

RHW-4 and NWM Roundabout Stack

Think a Highway x Highway Roundabout Stack can't be done without Project Symphony's pre-built interchange?  Think again!  Okay, I cheated a little.  This is only my fourth interchange using RHW, so go easy on me!  *;)

Announcing ... The Wineglass Roundabout Interchange

5da1222c52e48_WineglassInterchange-DONE.jpg.5cd90c2aab3b0d94e67f7e43e77d143b.jpg

I LOVE roundabout interchanges.

I was playing in my sandbox today, and this idea occurred to me.  It's frustrated me in the last month that you can't build a RHW viaduct overpass directly over the 4x4 AVE-4 NWM roundabout.  Now, I've got ideas for that, too, putting the RHW overpass over the approaches, rather than over the 4x4 roundabout itself.

Today, my ideas centred around putting 2 levels of the interchange stack underground, with the roundabout on the surface.  Works like a dream!  *:D

Now, admittedly, I wouldn't dare put this Frankenstein of MHW, and RHW-4, and OWR-2 and 4x4 AVE-4 roundabout into one of my cities.  I've no aversion at all to mixing RHW-4 and MHW and NWM ... but that little 4x4 roundabout would have to cope with all the left turning and right turning traffic from all four approaches.  That's a recipe for a permanently bright red roundabout in Traffic View, and surely comprises one of Jamil Herd's nightmares!  *:P

Now, that little roundabout does have RCI access, which has got my C$$$ opportunity brain ticking ... but definitely not with this configuration.  Maybe a high capacity OWR-4 road loop instead, or some mixture of roundabout and turbine interchange?

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Thank you, @Lucario Boricua, for your recommendation of the  Asphalt Highway Mod - NAM Texture Fixes , for making the mixture of RHW-4 and MHW easier on the eye.  I'll definitely be looking into that, as surely as I'll be continuing to mix RHW and MHW and NWM features.  * *:ohyes:

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Some of the Key Steps

Now, while I won't ever be building this particular interchange again, I entirely do plan to do some variants on this idea, so for posterity, here's some of the key steps I used.

The Golden Goblet Interchange

Okay, here's the C$$$ high commerce variant of that Wineglass Interchange (above).  I bulldozed the inadequate centre roundabout, and using the exact same MHW tunnel size and MIS slip roads (from my earlier post in this thread today), I put in an OWR-4 road loop instead, with awe inspiring traffic capacity and full RCI access.  *

5da1452a99c89_HighCommerceInterchange.jpg.3455fd86b6fff4c4526b0da553b7cc50.jpg

Given the combination of bus stops, subways, and large volumes of passing highway traffic, this beast will develop into a high finance C$$$ centre of commerce lickety-split.  That zone striping will also guarantee that the 2x3 lots develop into clean 4x3 towers as the city grows.

With OWR-4 having 75% of the traffic capacity of the RHW-4, even Jamil Herd will be happy!

My only problem is the curious unreality of the configuration.  I'm loving it in my sandbox, but I'd feel a trifle guilty putting it in a real city.  Only a little bit guilty, mind.  *:P

If I ever do this for real, I think I'd scale it up by another 2 or 4 tiles, so that the OWR-4 diagonals are cleaner.  Actually, I'm feeling a burning itch to put it in one of my cities, realistic or not.  *:kitty: *:ohyes:

My Golden Goblet Interchange is now 4 tiles bigger, feeling pretty happy with this.  The OWR-4 diagonals are clean, and it feels less contrived, now.

... with fire truck and police access to the centre — super important!   *:read:

When I eventually do the real thing, I'll lower the MHW tunnel entrances a few metres with a ramp down, which will further enhance the realism.  Yay!

Hendrix Creek & Starrett City RHW-4 diamond interchange

Just a little RHW-4 diamond interchange out on my little Hendrix Creek city tile, but I'm feeling quite chuffed.

I SO wanted a RHW-4 interchange in the cramped quarters here between the bridge and the MHW Neighbour Connection, and I did it!  Slopes are SUCH tricky things, and I wanted a gentle realistic slope for the bridge and for the MIS slip roads.  Terraformed it all myself, with the help of a 7.5m Raiser Piece, parallel Streets, and lots of tiny little nudges in God mode terraforming.  This is the first piece of my first regional highway "Belt Parkway" in my East New York region.  *:D

There's an easier way to achieve these gentle slopes for earth ramps ... I've seen them using railway tracks to do it in the YouTube video tutorials, but haven't found the right railway track pieces yet, so my old terraforming skills from vanilla SimCity 4 go to work.

5da2a96f8d5f8_HendrixCreek-MHWdiamond.jpg.48d6acf9893468137b97912022612aba.jpg

Pieces used for this RHW-4 on-slope interchange:

  • 7.5m Raiser Piece and 1-Level Flexible Onslope (x2), for the main stretch of RHW-4 leading to the bridge.
  • DRI ramp type B1 (x4) to connect the MIS roads to the RHW-4.  The closer A1 ramp wouldn't work because of the ground elevation difference between the MIS earth ramp and the 1-Level Flexible Onslope piece.
  • 1-Level Flexible Height Transition (x2), with the starter piece where the RHW-2 underpass is.
  • RHW-4 Starter Piece (Elevated/Level 1), to establish the RHW-4 road type for the 1-Level Flexible Onslope, which seems to transform to whatever road type you connect with it.  *:ohyes:

Here's the same little RHW-4 diamond interchange, complete with parallel frontage roads providing RCI access.  Even humble little RHW interchanges look really great in the game ... so exciting to explore all the NAM features!

Canarsie Veterans Circuit Interchange & Canarsie Pier

Here's my fifth RHW interchange, and my first RHW-4 x RHW-4 interchange.  This is also the second piece of my "Belt Parkway" reproduction from East New York, my first regional highway, which will be running through about 9 of my city tiles.  This is still on the seaside fringes of East New York, so fairly small as far as regional highways go.  I'll be doing some RHW-6S and RHW-8S highways later on, as I develop the central regional highways through Brooklyn, Brownsville, Flatbush and Marine Park.

This is along the mainland strip of my Canarsie Pol island city tile, and I'm using this Google Satellite image of the real-life Canarsie locality as my inspiration ... but with a high commerce and dense urban neighbourhood twist.  I LOVE highway interchanges in dense urban neighbourhoods!  *:ohyes:

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Canarsie+Pol/@40.62202,-73.8979206,1031a,35y,37.97h,54.5t/data=...!4d-73.8706014

5da5418d51f85_CanarsiePier-Satellite.jpg.8d9641e96c35420edff9fd0b1c897c87.jpg

In the distance, you can see my fourth RHW interchange, in my little Hendrix Creek city tile.  I do enjoy incorporating real-life aspects of East New York into my city tiles, with my own interpretation and personal twist.  Sometimes, I get distracted taking a sticky beak in Google satellite, and spend an hour just touring the real city!  *:D

This interchange is just a wee little bit more than simple diamond, incorporating the Canarsie Veterans Circuit (the big roundabout), and Canarsie Pier.  For SimCity C$$$ economic reasons (and atavistic personal delight), I'm developing the entire area with medium density commercial, repurposing the frontage roads you can see in the satellite image, and adding a stack-load of further frontage roads and grass pedmalls for RCI access — milking the adjoining highway traffic for C$$ and C$$$ growth opportunities.

My apologies to the American Legion Baseball Fields in the distance, that's where I've put my Small Municipal Airport.  My tourist island needs an airport, to drive commercial demand, and with very little mainland on the city tile, the baseball fields had to go.  When Canarsie goes big-time, with tourist C$$$ off the Eternal Commuter Bug, I'll use some of the spare cash to put in a few baseball fields on the coast instead.  *

Here it is!  My RHW-4 x RHW-4 diamond interchange, with offset roundabout, Fly-swat ferry loop terminal area, airport access, and frontage roads with LOTS and LOTS of commercial zoning!  Literally jam-packed.

5da544bda0e7c_Canarsie-RHWroundaboutinterchange.jpg.870c117cf8eb7312e9cf88c31c59fc9f.jpg

At the south side of this screenshot, at the pair of decorative RD-2 roundabouts, the highway exits the police protection radius, so I PROMISE I'll keep some pristine wilderness down there along the highway!

Yea, I know, I really should find me some roundabout fillers with the same specs as the Medium Plaza (which really just doesn't look right inside a roundabout).

Lot's of fun with this one.  Not only the wide MIS ramps to interface the roundabout on the east side, but also in-line merge of two MIS ramps to a single-carriageway of RHW-4 on the west side of the interchange, all in the name of being a tiny little bit true to the satellite image.  I even did that weird 90 degree off-ramp into the south-western neighbour connection, which is kinda like Canarsie Rd on satellite image ... after which I pirouetted off into complete SimCity fantasy-land, with full license to get creative.

Notice this is an entirely commercial neighbourhood, no schools! ... and just a little industrial zoned around the edges.  Even on the fringes of my New York region, this interchange will see lots of traffic, east-west between Brownsville Neighbour Connection and ferry terminal, and north-south along this stretch of "Belt Parkway".  The airport and police station will generate traffic for civic jobs on the frontage roads, and notice that while getting to work at airport and police station is quick and easy, they have to travel all the way round the airport to get home.  I did that deliberately, with the hope of livening up the airport area for a little C$ development ... maybe.

I'm gonna have this city tile on pause for a LONG LONG time, as I build the rest of "Belt Parkway" down the mainland coast, with two highway bridges, another little RHW interchange at the south end of the tile, and Neighbour Connections to Hendrix Creek and Jamaica Bay city tiles north and south.

Curiously enough, the trickiest part of the whole interchange was this little MIS ramp, spotlighted in the centre of this screenshot.  o.O

5da54d9966f01_Canarsie-RHWroundaboutinterchange(closeup).jpg.69014efbe365bc9eb90c5d8add4c8bd5.jpg

It's backwards, a BEx Inside ramp (I think), according to this cheat sheet of DRI drag patterns.  These inside ramps are MUCH harder than outside ramps, and at first I did an outside ramp and went, "Oh darn it, the yellow line is on the wrong side!"  When I finally got the inside ramp done, I breathed a sigh of relief.  It was originally a single-carriageway of RHW-4 for the orthogonal part interfacing the roundabout, but then a happy accident converted the orthogonal part from RHW-4 to MIS ... and I still don't know how!  *

Compact RHW-4 T-Interchange (NAM36)

Feeling very happy!  *:ohyes:*

Last night I was doodling in my Sandbox, trying to come up with a clean and compact NAM alternative to the vanilla MHW T-Interchange.  Frustration central!  I eventually realised what my problem was ... my NAM creativity was inspired (and limited), by the MHW concept of what a high capacity T-Interchange looks like.

5dafc79ab7413_MHWT-Interchange.jpg.6d779f60e5edbfd46eef65f21bf48d0e.jpg

This is really NOT the place to find NAM inspiration!  I've encountered that before.  Trying to use the NAM to reproduce what Maxis Highway already does, is frustrating and unproductive, and it requires knowledge of sophisticated NAM techniques ... knowledge I don't have, yet.  If you want a MHW T-Interchange, best to just plop it, join up your RHW-4 to the stubs, and be done.

But when I finally stepped outside the box of my preconceived interchange ideas, I came up with this beautiful and compact RHW-4 T-Interchange.  So loving it!

5dafc90ebb6b2_CompactRHW-4T-junction.jpg.fb687e09a3b9c9b97122ab2f4b133bf7.jpg

Now, I've come unstuck with the little OWR-2 3x3 roundabout traffic capacities before, so I carefully evaluated this, and yes, it stacks up!  *:thumb:

Admittedly, the OWR-2 3x3 roundabout has only 30% the traffic capacity of the RHW-4, but in this configuration, it only handles 33% of the interchange traffic, if all approaches have balanced traffic volume.  The OWR-2 roundabout is also a convenient access location for my frontage road on that side.  While I certainly wouldn't want to put any more traffic through that roundabout, that little bit of frontage road traffic should be small enough to avoid overwhelming the OWR-2 traffic capacity.

Could I make a more compact RHW-4 T-Interchange?  Please comment and post if you know a way.  Note that:

  1. If I put the MIS ramps any closer, the tight 90º MIS turn breaks.

  2. I could use A1 style ramps and a RHW-2 x MIS T-intersection in place of the OWR-2 roundabout, but I feel that would be unrealistic, with high contention between left-turning traffic onto MIS vs RHW-2 underpass.  Anyway, the OWR-2 roundabout is not wasted space, providing direct RCI access for two of the highway adjacent commercial lots ... and I like roundabouts!  :}

  3. I might be able to move the north-western B1 MIS ramp 1 tile closer, but that would destroy the symmetry of those two northern MIS ramps, and has no real benefit.

I've just posted tutorials on two of the techniques I've used here, in case you're interested to know:

Also note that the compact 2x2 90º MIS turn is a tricky technique, which I might post a tutorial on later, in the comments under my NAM36: Starting Out advice for newcomers post.  For my first month using the NAM, I had no idea there was a way to do a compact 2x2 90º MIS turn!  *:ducky:

i only hope the 2x2 90º MIS turns don't break when I run it through the real game.  :O

Small semi-rural interchange

This is my lowest capacity RHW-4 interchange, yet!  *:ducky: *
The highway itself will experience a fair bit of traffic, but this interchange won't!

It's in the north-western semi-rural area of my latest Brownsville city tile, in  New York , with itsy-bitsy small farms (I-A), light industry (I-M), and maybe, just maybe, some little bit of low-wealth commercial (C$) planned, reminiscent of that real piece of Brownsville, but not quite the same.

While I could have used the 1-Level Flexible Height Transition to do the underpass, the lowered road and tunnel (200 yards down the highway) is more realistic for some of these semi-rural areas in Sydney, where I live, and in Australia generally.  There's just 7 tiles of MIS on each side of the RHW-4, the bare minimum (I think) to avoid cosmetic issues with the MIS x RD-2 intersections.  The use of Streets is an indication of just how little traffic this interchange will get.  I love the way that RHW makes these low capacity interchanges SO MUCH more realistic!

5db223c131771_Brownsville-MylowestcapacityRHW-4interchange.jpg.5682c4ec11697f644eea912856ad34fc.jpg

There's a slight possibility the interchange might get used as a highway U-turn.  If there's lots of sims doing that, I might upgrade the RD-2 to RHW-2, with two OWR-2 tunnels under the highway.  *:D

The OWR-2 has 60% (not 30%) capacity of a RHW-4 per tile in all simulator configurations, except classic, so you might be on the safe side here, even with more traffic ;).

Also, you can put the MIS ramp one tile closer. If the MIS turn breaks, try clicking with the RHW tool on the network around the curve. I managed to have the curve properly rebuild by clicking on one of the marked two tiles (don't remember  which one it was).

There is a draggable method for a MIS folded wye which isn't shown in the newest RHW guide iirc. I don't know if this is shown in any of the common videos, so I've shown the draw pattern below. Just connect the two open end for the wye to appear.

Happy interchange building! :)

I'm so going to try this!  When and how these tight 90 degree MIS curves break, and how to fix them, has been rather mysterious, which is why I haven't written a tutorial on it yet.  *:???:    I didn't even think to click the RHW-2 tool so far from the break!

A thousand thank you's @McDuell, that looks absolutely perfect for frontage roads, which I tend to build along 90% of my highways that are inside police protection radius!  Brownsville, New York, has close on a hundred R$ large tenements in real-life, which I'm attempting to reproduce in my Brownsville large city tile, which has meant lots and lots of interchanges to ensure they are happily employed all over this large city tile:

  1. Four DxD AVE-4 x MHW L2 prefab interchanges.
  2. Two MHW x AVE-4 NWM roundabout prefab interchanges.  I love how these look, AND I've learned how to connect MIS to the corners of the roundabout with OWR-2 stubs, but I'm a bit worried that the AVE-4 roundabout will prove to have low capacity, becoming a weak point in the interchange, so I only use these as a suburban interchange, not for regional highways.
  3. Five RHW-4 x RHW-4 simple diamond interchanges.
  4. One RHW-4 x RHW-4 T-Interchange — this one!
  5. Two RHW-4 three-level stack interchanges for intersections of the main regional highways running through Brownsville.  The biggest one is my Golden Goblet interchange on this same thread, and another slightly smaller Three Level OWR-4 and RHW-4 Interchange Stack I've been playing with ... and hoping it works!

With all the large interchanges built, I've been looking at how to get my residential population onto the highways!  To that end, I've been experimenting with various RHW-4 x OWR-2 and RHW-4 x RHW-2 interchanges, but they still take up lots of room.  This MIS folded wye DRI technique will be invaluable, and I even just tried it out.  Wow, so good, thank you!  *
