Great work Vlasky! One of my favorite diners in NYC.

I made the Empire Diner when I first started BATing years ago. I'll put it in my downloads section to save you the trouble of BATting it unless you want to practice BATing.

Flatiron is coming along slowly but surely. Not much progress to show, still looks pretty similar to when I first showed it.

(Thanks for taking inventory on who still active in the team BTW)

Hey Vlasky.

I would be honored to be part of the NY team. I ve realised the Bank Of America Building in Bryant Park but i was unable to create a nightmod for it so I ve sent the gmax scene file to Hanson to fix the nightlighting and some other stuffs.

Thanks to him, we will be able to integrate this new NYC landmark in our cities2.gif

Alright, I survived the international waters! Don't look so surprised...

...Then again, them dolphins are vicious!

Francesco or "Francis":
Another thing, i believe that the models do have a very definite rundown feeling. This isn't a bad thing, but the real buildings seems to be quite well-kept. Right now i believe that your models do have too much a "dirty" feeling.

Well, it's a difficult balance. Some people like run-down buildings, some don't. I can't please everyone, so I please everyone I can (plus, I like run-down buildings more. I don't know why).

Todd:
As for the new buildings, you picked them for their details, now bring out those details so that the can be noticed. See how much better 99 looks with those nice noticable ornaments around the windows? Also, it looks like their cornices were stripped off for some absurd reson, stick a generic one up there just so that they don't look like boxes (or not, depending on how it looks in comparison with the others)

1. Since I can't really scale the ornaments out (they're prettymuch flat with the wall), I scaled them up 150% or so, although it varied based on specifics. Referring to the picture below, the part to the left of the red line is the former ornaments and the part to the right is the revised. And while we're at it, I made new window textures, air conditioners, graffiti and vintage, or "nostalgic" advertisements.

109madisonst2.jpg

2. For cornices, I'm going with "not", because there aren't actually any cornices. That's the biggest problem with the building. I could put one up that isn't too elaborate and blends in, if there's a good reason to mess with the truth.

And welcome to the new members, jackreid, Parisian, and Feindbold (more or less), I look forward collaborating!

Also, thanks to Vlasky for taking inventory on current NYBT members.

I think that's all.

Y'all have a good week. I mean it.

Oh, I know there isn't anything there now (I was looking at it before I wrote that), the point was, it looks like they had one, and it was removed (for whatever crazy reason). If it works without it, then so be it, but you would have to see how it looks along side the other ones you have already made. Out of curiosity, why exactly can't you scale them out (I'm talking .1m tops), I think it would make much more of a difference then scaling them up because it will introduce a shadow, which defines the details better.

Your brick "texture" looks great, no complaints there, however I don't like how pink it is coming out. Hue looks good, but try bumping up the contrast (this will make it seem a little darker and a little more saturated, but that is what it needs IMO. I could not get it to look as good with just saturation/lightness). Depending on how gmax treats you, it should look more like brick and less like brick painted pale pink. This will also help differentiate the brick form the limestone details on the facade (you may also try making them a tad whiter, but be careful).

This goes for all your colored brick textures (I am excluding the white one, that looks great. I might add a subtle blue overlay to get rid of the yellow cast on it, but it looks good for gmax), some run the risk of looking like concrete.

You really make me want to model a brownstone, if only I could finish up my half dozen other projects 3.gif

Well, trying to please everyone is a good choice, but you're making a re-creation here.In short my position is that given how the existing building does appear you should be as faithful as possible...but i think i'm not the right persion to give you sugggestions on this field.

About run-down buildings in general...well, i like them, and i like to mix'em with "better looking" buildings. So i'm not against "rundown appearence" but i care about realism the most.

EDIT: oh, and Francis is the english version of my name (Francesco in italian, Francis in english)

Love the personality you show in your posts JTF 3.gif

I like the BATs, I tend to lean towards the clean building side, but if you can do the run-down feeling right it will look good as well. It's worked for you in the past so no reason why it shouldn't now, unless you've stopped taking your BAT roids.

Why HD at all? IMO, HD makes sense for small objects that wouldn't be visible otherwise - traffic signs, for example - but not for buildings and any normal lot props.

Tech stuff aside, this looks like a very nice choice for a BAT! 4.gif Why not call them "Graham Apartments"? 3.gif

Yeah, why aren't members of the team posting more!?

Oh yeah, I have answers to that... projects, homework, spring cleaning, trumpet, and Thursday comedies... Speaking of which...

But anyways...

109madisonst3.jpg

Todd:

1. How's that for a cornice? I only added one cornice, because it only looks like there was only one at any point in time. Although if the right building deserves one as well, so be it. Subsequently, I don't think I'll include cornices in the final upload. Although I don't always agree with Francis on accuracy, this is a case where accuracy should probably be taken into account. There isn't a cornice now, I'm not great at making them, I'll leave it at that.

2. I scaled the ornaments out until [most of them] were at .1 meters. I might have missed a few, just warning ya. It doesn't look like it did much, but I'll leave that up for discussion.

3. I added about 20% contrast (Although that might be on the basis of 120% for Gimp, in which case it would be 16.66%) to the brick texture. More? Too much? I don't have an acquired eye for brick textures.

4. Brownstones? If you say so.

5. iPzkpfw? Strange acronym, awesome tank. By the way, what's with the recent influx of people with avatars resembling iPod ads around here? Coincidence? Or is there some government reimbursement? Or some other reason? I've essentially been offline for a week and a half.

Aaron Graham: Pretty good start with that building, I'll have to see more updates before I can add real input. All I think I can say at this point is that the center mullion on the door (I think it's called a lock rail) looks a little high. It looks like it should be in line with the window's center mullion. But that's all, great start!

Parisian: 575 Fifth Avenue... (googles it) Oh, yeah, that one! That should be a fine addition to the game; a simple boxy building to fill in downtowns is always welcome!

On a side note, I'm running a small side project right now with gmax. Does anyone know a way to export with it or where I can get Gmax Render Suite nowadays? I searched for hours, and I got nothin'. I suppose I could download the free 3dsMax trial, but I don't have a .edu email. Ideas?

Sorry for posting so much text without breaking it with a smiley or two... how's this to make it up?

4.gif26.gif3.gif11.gif40.gif

Okay, have a great weekend everyone! Think happy thoughts!
