Aaron, this is a great looking building, and a great start on the modelling. The scale of the doors and windows seems a bit tall to me - what are your floor heights? The door in particular looks much taller than a lot of Maxis and custom stuff out there...

GOOD TEXTURES ARE MADE, NOT FOUND.
(I get tired of saying that in BAT threads.)

what is exactly your problems with texturing this model in HD? Aside from what T Wrecks said, HD is in no way different than SD in terms of texturing or, as a matter of fact anything else. The size of the model, it's UWV maps etc is exactly same. The only difference is a stronger "zoom" on the camera.

Just a quick note on the "iPzKpfw": The "i", is of course, the Apple scheme, and PzKpfw stands for "Panzerkampfwagen", which I'd translate to "armored fighting vehicle" off the top of my head.

T Wrecks gets a great big cookie for figuring that out 3.gif (although speaking the Deutsch helps ).

Anyway, JTF, looks pretty good. The one on the left still looks like it has plastered walls (can't see the texture) but that's not that big a deal. The cornices look sufficient if you chose to include them, I would personally but its up to you. If the details are already extruded out that much then there isn't much else you can do. I think the fire escapes are getting in the way of them being really noticeable, but those are sch a major part of the building that one wouldn't consider changing them.

You are better off trying to get 3dsmax because gmax's rendering capabilities are exceptionally poor. I know of a few people who were able to make accounts without a university email, so its worth a try getting the 6 or 13 moth licenses.

Well, that was rather easy as a native speaker. Having a guess at the tank model judging from the silhouette should be more challenging - is it a Tiger

Jumpthefence:

If you can get a copy you might want to re-model it here, rather than converting the existing model.I've read that gmax to max conversion might be a little difficult.I don't know much about this topic, though.

In max there are some useful tools that might make the re-modelling process easier.

As for the current considerations over your BAT i'm pretty much with SimHoTToDDy, especially on the left building.

Aaron Graham:

Really nice! Maybe adding some contrast on the parts when texturing might help.

TWrecks:

I was thinking it was PzKw IV, but not the tiger.Actually, right now i believe it is the PzKw IV Ausf F2.

I'm really curious to see what model actually is !

You must know me too well T Wrecks, every tank avatar I have used is a Tiger I, although the one I used before had two Tigers, a Panther, and a Pzkpfw IV (also a tiny bit of a StuG assault gun) all in one 3.gif

It was a good guess Francis, the front of the hull is almost identical in those models with the only exception probably being the added width on the Tiger. The late Pzkpfw 4s look a lot like small Tigers (with the exception of the turret).

/tank rant

We now return you to your scheduled BAT thread.

Similarly, we don't update constantly because we have work to get done. Plus, we can't really update until we have a model to show.

Patience is a virtue!

...and it's pretty difficult to BAT and type at the same time. Although I'll bet there's a way.

Lucky for you, I'll show something.

110madisonst1.jpg

This is 110 Madison Street, right across the street from 109 Madison. I picked it because I liked the contrast between the short building and tall building, the ornaments would pose an interesting challenge, and the back has a sort of industrial look, sort of like a loading dock(?). I also wanted to try making a model that's partly underground. Hey, there's a first time for everything, right?

As you can probably tell by the roof and left facade, this is far from done.

First off, I need to know some things about building underground. Should I use planes or boxes as the perimeter of the hole? I would prefer to use boxes for a number of reasons, so if I can, that would be super. In the picture there, I have planes in there as a placeholder. Second, I just want to confirm the deal with LODs:

From the Simtropolis Omnibus, Station Modding: Semi-Transparency and LODs

"If you are making a underground object like a tunnel, you don't need to have the LOD below ground, if you do there will most likely be issues. Here is the LOD i used on my ramp: tracks, but thats okay because if you make your LOD underground to make the ramp visible, you will run into issues where the ground shows above the ramp."

So, I don't want my LODs to be below ground, no? I assume I'll have to reposition them after Reseting them.

And finally, any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

But anyways, you all know the deal by now. Critique, comment, make Soviet jokes, et cetera. In Soviet Russia, forum reads you!

Todd: Nice tank!

Alright, I'm completely free this weekend, and the undergrads are in town, so I won't be doing much... BATing time! Maybe I can get a party together and have a bonfire Saturday. That sounds pretty good...

Everyone have a good weekend!

Have a party if the weather's nice.

While I'm back(lol 18.gif) only to re-upload my lost BATs, I'd thought I'd stop by and say hi and great work everyone. Oh and if anyone has my old NYBT uploads, please let me know, I'd like to re-upload them so they can be used. Again, great work everyone and welcome to new members here! 2.gif

Finalizing school work has probably drained everybody away for the moment.  Fear not...summer break for some is almost here.

Meanwhile, the things one finds when migrating and reorganizing files:

I was too bored

If I recall, months ago there was talk of a logo, and as a side doodle I had made a thematic forum icon.  Unfortunately, I no longer seem to have the original source images, so this can't quite be extended as a banner or stampable logo without some online treasure hunting.  But, I suppose it's the thought that counts, along with the amusement factor.

I'm a sucker for brownstones, so keep 'em coming!

Kriptowhite has not been on ST sense 12/09/2009 when I looked at his profile, Its hard to get him to upload 599 Lexington Ave. There is no way to contact him and we can't upload it because it not our work I think. But can anyone make it downloadable from this thread. I thought I had 599 Lexington, but might have lost it. Im sorry if I can't help you.

I'm disappointed at the disappearance of 599 Lexington Avenue, 599 Lexington Avenue Subway Station, 17 state street, 130 Liberty Street (Deutsche Bank Building), 885 Third Avenue, New York Marriot World Financial Center (85 West Street), and the AT&T Long Lines Building (33 Thomas Street). These buildings and their thumbnails are still listed in the downloads section at the hanson's nyc cj site on blog spot but the download link is through simtropolis. I don't know why these lots are gone and I don't see any evidence that they might be re-uploaded to stex as nothing major has been going on in this thread since about February of 2010. It seems this issue is being ignored as there are other people than me who have been complaining about these missing buildings for months and still nothing being done about it.

Please feel free to comment, like and/or subscribe to my New York City recreation CJ....Thanks *;)

This issue had not been ignored and perhaps if some more attention was paid it could have been realized that Kriptonwhite had been banned on that site and reading the last post of Sgt Pepper it could have been realized that he might have the intention to re-upload some of his BATs and that maybe he might have lost some of them during the time.

Well, maybe someone thinks that selective reading and whiny complaining could pay off...

Another note to persons asking wheter this BAT thread is gone or not.It had been said before, i will repeat that...

Welcome to a normal BAT thread.

if something does have something to show it will be shown, if not no post will be made. But we all, me, you, NYBT members might be busy. This doesn't mean that their BATing came to an end.

Oh, and a last point regarding the statement that says that "nothing major has been going on in this thread since about february 2010".Well, what does "nothing major" mean?

I saw people doing BATs during those months and many had been uploaded.I saw many people posting, and many others doing reasonable comments.that's how thigs should be, and i'm still wondering about the meaning (if there is any) of "nothing major".

Time for me to conclude.

People, please refrain from asking for things that NYBT members can't accomplish.Comment their current works, and if nothing is shown simply don't comment. If this is not what do you want please stop.

I know that all this might sound really harsh and that i might look like a preacher on the pulpit right now, but i've felt that writing all this was badlty needed,Please people think about this.

Brandon: Hey, thanks for stoppin' by!

Heblem: I suppose not... now stop reading this thread and get back to work! I command you! 18.gif

GuerrilaWarfare: Take a chill pill.

Odainsaker: Cool avatar! I think it's time I change mine, eh? I still have mine left over from "that unmentionable website".

On a completely different subject, I am a bit confused by your last remark. Don't brownstones have to be made of a brown stone? If so, what's the term for these buildings? Townhouses? Sorry to pester you, but I want to learn this architecture stuff at some point or another.

Argh, I still have a month left! Is it just me, or does Massachusetts let out really late compared to the rest of the country? I think my cousins in New York and Virginia start summer break at least a week before me... darned liberal political system! Trying to give me a good and useful education!

And, on top of that, state testing resumes tomorrow.

[/school rant]

110madisonst2.jpg

It's obviously not quite finished, the facade on the left side is still blunt shapes and color, but you get the basic idea. I still have to add air conditioners, probably adjust the brightness of the roof access center part, maybe add some more graffiti, and, of course, put in the facade on the left.

Otherwise, I might start rendering soon. But of course, I need a sign from The Almighty Todd on what work still needs to be done.

One last piece of business:

First off, I need to know some things about building underground. Should I use planes or boxes as the perimeter of the hole? I would prefer to use boxes for a number of reasons, so if I can, that would be super. In the picture there, I have planes in there as a placeholder.

Anyone know the answer? Anyone? You, in the blue shirt?

I think that's it.

Everyone have a great week, enjoy the weather if you can manage to!

Edit: Didn't notice Francis's post. Everyone make sure you read that... and stay on topic.

Haha, sorry, I use terms a little too broadly sometimes.  The model you are making is more normally called a "rowhouse" or a "terraced house."  In the U.S., many of these building types come from the 19th and early 20th centuries and are best associated with dense cities like New York City, during which time the popular material to use was indeed a type of sandstone called brownstone.  Because of the material's common usage in such buildings, the term "brownstone" has also come to be used to refer the building type as well, regardless of the actual materials used.

Incidently, while browsing from urban themed desktop wallpaper, I came across this image over some rowhouses/brownstones by Paulo Barcellos on Flickr:

The City That Never Sleeps by Paulo Barcellos on Flickr

What surprised me was how the majority of the buildings in the picture used skylights (a seemingly rare thing in the suburban South).  Naturally, it is a convenient way of adding basic daylight into what would otherwise be a dark rooftop stairwell.  At any rate, it's a cool image, so I hope it proves hlepful.
