EDIT: Geometry, calm down with the questions and be patient, please?

Aaron, Im on a different computer so I'll probably won't be able to check my email until tomorrow or the next day for Home Insurance Plaza.

It's kinda funny, from what I recall from the original uploads, the ratings I got on the re-releases are almost the exact same as the old uploads. Excluding 375 Pearl Street, I think it was 4.84 when it was first uploaded(the NYBT V2 one, not the angled first version).

After I re-upload Home Insurance Plaza and Federal Hall, I should be done and I'll be outta here.

Well, I kept up that part of the promise, except for the fact that I was a week late. Happy Tuesday afternoon, everyone!

Although, I blame society for not answering my question about the parts of a model that go underground. I just decided to build now, and answer questions/find problems later. So, on to the model!

110madisonst3.jpg

I think it's pretty obvious that the background is, in fact, grey instead of black, in accordance with Simfox's advice. As you can see, the building is pretty darn near done. All I'm considering changing is the fire escapes, maybe giving them a more rusty texture with more noise. But little details, you know. Does anyone else have comments before I fix that detail and, maybe, export?

Also, I'll have to repost some pictures of the other two buildings, but those might get exported soon afterwards.

Simfox: Thanks for the tips!

Aaron: I hope you're back into BATing, especially for this summer. It's gotten somewhat lonely, a few weeks may go by with only myself posting BATs.

I don't have time to say too much, because it's been very busy for me since Memorial Day. Final exams, school projects, graduation parties, and I have to write a speech after posting this. Oh well.

Everyone have a good almost-summer-ly week!

Sorry for the delay. Work has been slow going due to RL and work on other BAT's. It's also a large file so BAT lags ups. I'm about halfway finished with it. I'm planning to render it in BAT4MAX as that produces better quality renders and I can make reflective textures. I'm still learning my way around BAT4MAX and am still unsure of how to convert gmax files into 3DS so the Bank of America Tower can be imported in BAT4MAX.

I have more time now since I've graduated with school so it should be done before the end of the month. I want it in game as much as you do but I've had to prioritize my time with RL matters.

Jumpthefence, looking good. You made the right decision to make an underground entryway as many buildings in that area have underground entryways for businesses.

The only thing I would do before exporting isgive the fire escapes more of a rusty texture as you said. That's the way they would appear in RL (of course not too rusty as that would pose a safety hazard2.gif) Other than that it looks like they're ready.

On my end, work has been slow going due to RL and all of my BAT projects are taking longer than I would like, but work is being done.

Not much has changed since the last time I showed the Flatiron Building expcept rounding out the curves and tweaking the basic textures.

                                   flatironbuilding2.png

It's an very ornate building with a lot of little details, like most buildings built during the turn of the century, which makes BATing the Flatiron a task more difficult than I originally thought. Still have a lot of work to do with detailing, texturing and finally nightlighting.

yep... RL is a b...

Well, there is no way to export 3DS from GMAX, there are, however some special ways to get models to Max. There should be tutorial on Omnibus about it. However, models often end up in Max quite a bit distorted, in particular all the smoothing groups are screwed. Living it as is is not an option for a hight quality model. Fixing it... well for a big model (as BoA would most definitely be) could be very time consuming and confusing (if all the parts haven't been named precisely and explicitly.

In many cases it would be faster to actually re-built the model from ground up, given that all the hard decisions had been made, proportions know etc., add to that far better tools and automation of Max.

After you have got the model in Max (one way or another) you most important task would be setting proper materials. Everything will depend on that. Use Arch&Design material presets, but for the best results and efficiency you would need to modify them. When you do you should keep in mind natural physical properties of the materials. For instance Glass does NOT have any color, any defuse color that is. If it is going to bee see through than it will/may have some refraction color. Also it reflectivity is not constant. It follows Fresnel laws.

For overall interior lighting it would be more prudent to use Self-Illuminated materials. With real lights given the size of the building you would need proper powerful render farm to render it. Self-illuminated mats wouldn't give you accuracy, but you don't really need it there. However with exterior/architectural lighting you should use proper lights and if at all possible photometric lights with IES profiles to get proper light distribution and avoid those ugly cross-light blown up parts so typical for the fake "normal" lights

Well since I don't have my teenage summer job yet and since I allready went on summer vacation, I guess I can come back to BATing and do some NYBT BATs...if NYBT doesn't mind. It's out of boredom. 3.gif So Mad Hatter is right...I want some tea now....

Alright, I'm not busy now, yeah! Let's do some BATing, watch Indiana Jones and play Scrabble!

Elliot: The building's looking pretty good, I might make the wall texture a bit brighter, but that's just me. Otherwise, I can't wait to see what the windows will look like. BTW, what size lot will this be (or will it be overhanging)?

Brandon: I suppose you're welcome back, I can't really keep you out. Comebacks much?

Well since I don't have my teenage summer job yetquote>

Do you make more than minimum wage? If so, I'd love that job. (nervous laughs)18.gif

Alright, let's see how I'm doing, shall we?

twobridges2.jpg

Hey, I'm doing pretty well!

The only thing I'm worried about is the fire escapes. I didn't quite know how to make them look aged. I added some rust (about 1 in 10 pixels is a rusty color) but I guess you can't really see it. Right now, I'm thinking I'll just desaturate them until I'm happy. After all, a "rusty" fire escape isn't really that rusty. This is what you find when you search "rusty fire escapes" on Google Images.

p070629.jpg

Not really rusty much, but very faded. So I'm going to try that.

So you know the drill, all comments are welcome.

Or if a bunch of people like them, I'll export them. It's up to your opinions.

Everyone have a great week! Enjoy your final exams, some of you. Can't wait for mine!*

I have no idea yet. I haven't turned in the application yet.17.gif3.gif It's a job for a Sonic near my house. I hear they pay good in Alexandria, and my dad was pushing it so...yea. And yea, comebacks a plenty!(nervous laughter34.gif)

Well, I hope I'm really welcome back, I would actually like to BAT again for the summer. This was an NYBT idea I had for me to do-

sxf8g6.jpg

The Museum of Jewish Heritage, in Lower Manhattan. It's small, it's simple, and a nice tribute-like gesture I would suppose. And it would be good to have another museum for SimCity.1.gif

As for your BATs, fantastic! I love the detail, and to be honest the fire escapes look great as is. I'd go ahead an export them, based on my old knowledge of BATing.

I'm hoping Todd or you or anyone will refresh me with texturing.3.gifI actually want to do it better than I did a while ago.

Oh good luck with your Final Exams, I all ready took mine, and passed!16.gif

Quick question...

So I use sketchup for my BATs, and it helps when I made my NY BATs since I could get like a google earth image in there to help get the proportions right. But the scale in height would always be messed up once imported to gmax, though I use meters and real life heights and that. It appears shorter in gmax, when I keep the height scale to like a real life person's height of about 1.5 meters. So, to help prevent this problem, how tall would the average SIM be? So I can get the heights right. Like around 2 to 2.5 meters?

Brandon: Floors are generally 4m, taller for commercial applications. I model with the scale already included, for example all my doors are 1m x 3m tall.

Yes, SC4 has no real sense of scale. The extra height is to keep the model from looking squashed vertically.

JTF: looking good. Not sure what else to advise for the moment. The vibrant pink bricks need to be adjusted a little bit though. They stick out like a sore thumb so try aiming for a little more brown and perhaps a little less saturation.

Also, I'm not sure if this will give you shadow glitches, but setting the LODs so that they do not surround the underground part of the model will chop that area off in game. Basically have them wrap the model as if that section were not there.
